That brings up kind of a side question: are there any Scripps stations that aren't struggling? I know KSHB has been doing ok for a bit and then it's slipped rather badly lately. KMGH wasnt doing too well last I heard... WCPO slipped.... WXYZ is in a distant third.... WEWS isn't winning... WMAR isn't... Yuck... I can't speak for WFTS or their stations in California. KNXV won something a little while back... It just doesn't look real good.

I'll say this about KSHB. I think they struggle because they produce an inferior news product. I don't think any of their recent hires are older than 35, and even then I think that's a stretch to say that. I think most of their recent hires have to be younger than 30. I mean I read on TVSpy the other day they just hired someone from Bakersfield, that's basically a 100 market jump. The talent this ND has hired are young and inexperienced for a mid-major market. And when you hire inexperienced, you generally get shoddier reporting. Like this. When they were doing OK it was mostly under a better management team both of who are no longer at the station.

And they're not hiring young because of looks. It's a side benefit but this station is doing it solely because of cost savings. Also I looked at their jobs page the other day. They STILL haven't found their replacement for Mark Clegg, no AND either, which I think has been vacant for over a year now. And they have some other major vacancies to fill. They are understaffed but sure seem to be taking their time.

It also doesn't help when your corporate office is dropping winning programming like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy for crap like "The NOW". I know we all knock Sinclair but at least they show they have a lick of sense when it comes to running and programming TV stations. Sad to see the downfall of what was once one of the "gold standard" companies in journalism and winning TV stations. I am glad we don't have Scripps TV stations here (I already have to deal with a similarly subpar group, Gannett).

KSHB is also adding news on KMCI at 7:00 a.m. beginning in April. KSHB will rearrange its weekend news lineup as well, starting weekend news at 6:00 a.m., moving Weekend Today to 7:00, then continuing local news at 9:00 in the morning.

Question: how come KSHB doesn't produce the nightly 9 o'clock news on KMCI? You'd think that'd be a no-brainer but they air syndicated shows at that time...
  3. KSHB's traffic and features reporter (and sometimes news anchor) Kacie McDonnell will join Sporting KC, a soccer franchise, to do hosting and sideline reporting. It should be noted that KMCI, which is owned by KSHB, broadcasts their games. So it's basically cross promotion for their newscasts. The article below says McDonnell will stay on the morning newscasts too so I guess she will be pulling six day work weeks during soccer season. I guess she got this job because she is locked in a contract with Scripps for a couple years and realizes she can't go anywhere anytime soon.

Also I've seen many press releases in my day but this is one of the worst. I mean they literally found an old interview of her and just copied a quote of her from it and made up another sentence. How pathetic. I've read the interview on TVSpy before, I'm not going to dig up the link, you can Google it if you care.

That is, until Sinclair decides to give KSNV's chopper the axe as well.

I doubt it. Sinclair used to not be a fan of news choppers but surprisingly they have kept WOAI's chopper lease (and have extended it to KABB as well). The only thing is that the chopper is now sponsored by World Car. So I guess Sinclair's logic there is, "we'll keep the chopper if we can find a company willing to shoulder most or all of the cost of it".
  5.

KLAS' traffic guy just announced on his Facebook page that he and the station's chopper "have been eliminated." Not surprising, but sad to see. That leaves KSNV as the only Vegas station still in the air.

Called it, told ya Nexstar hates choppers.

Now let's see how they'll work "Local" into the station...

  6. Let's see..what would be the new website for KLAS? How about wearelasvegas.com, wearenevada.com, or lasvegasmatters.com?

    LasVegasHomepage? myLasVegas?

Methinks none of the above. I think Nexstar will give them something unique so they can stand out. Nexstar has its favorites like WSYR, WATN, KTVX and a couple others that have domain names not typical of their other stations.

Weren't they lasvegasnow.com prior to adopting the 8news Now branding? They could go back to that.

Doubt it. I remember that domain name, I also remember when WMBB was panhandleparade.com and they didn't go back to that when Nexstar took over...

KSDK must've decided to have it disappear because I'm watching their newscast tonight and the L3 still disappears. The annoying thing is that the rundown disappears with the L3. That seems to make the rundown seem more pointless than it already is.

Then KSDK must not know how to take the L3 down while leaving the rundown up. Or their director is coding the show wrong. Because at KENS, they can do both.

Most of the time during the story, they usually just leave the lower third up. They only take it down during the weather or teases.

    Some interesting news:

KATU has started using Sinclair's Glass music package, but are still using their Giant Octopus graphics.

Take this how you will, but Sinclair may be generous to some of their stations.

maybe their license to use their old music expired and rather than pay to renew, knowing they'd have to drop it eventually, they probably just took the 615 pkg now. cost-saving issue if anything.

I don't think it's them being generous, I think KATU just doesn't have the production equipment yet to be able to use the new graphics. I'm sure they'll get them eventually.

  9. OK, WOAI went live with their new look yesterday. For now I'll just post the open, as recorded off the air. (the only computer my tuner works with is really slow so I will have montages of WOAI and KABB and the other SA stations later this week).

And a bonus, the final live broadcast EVER from their downtown studio, during last night's Sports Sunday. I edited out most of the show so it's only the open and the final segment where they actually close out the building. They did a fantastic job IMO:

EDIT: Had to reupload to fix the problem.

  10. http://www.news4sanantonio.com/news/features/top-stories/stories/a-fond-farewell-woai-downtown-studios-18738.shtml

here's the story promised, they basically have reran abbreviated versions of it ever since that newscast at 5 on Friday.

Today's the big day they move, news and weather comes from the new studio. Sports come from downtown for the day. David Robinson and his son will help do the final show from Navarro Street after the football game.

It will be interesting to see what they do with that set they have now. I hope they don't just rip it out and chuck it. I hope they donate to a school or something or even recycle it at a Sinclair sister.

As for the property they're about to vacate, I could see it selling pretty quickly. They're on prime riverfront property, which would be good for a hotel or condo. That building is over 100 years old and it needs to go. I hope people don't put up a fight like they did when KWEX moved to the northwest side last year. It was bad enough where people got arrested because they were trying to stop the bulldozing of the old KWEX building near downtown from getting torn down. They kept the STL tower up to pay homage to the site (I could see why they did it but it's an ugly unnecessary eyesore now).

  11. They did a nice little piece about their new building (which will now be called the Sinclair Broadcast Center). They showed off the new logo which is the same except they changed the 4 out and replaced it with a more generic 4 (without the star). It looks more generic now. They showed off a graphic preview so it's white on blue to be more consistent with the other Sinclair stations. They also gave a set preview. It's Devlin and it looks like a typical design for them. It has a couch on it because that's the only part they showed. It's in the former KABB newsroom space so the ceiling dimensions are a bit low for a TV studio. You could see it in the shots they showed. Will be interesting to see how that translates on TV.

First newscast from the new building, Sunday at 5. Everything else has been there already, like the newsroom, master control, and sales. So the anchors and newscast production are now reunited with everyone else.

I will try to post a video in a few hours unless they post online then I will just put the link up. I will also post a high-quality off air montage first newscast.

EDIT: Last newscasts will be Saturday night. Don Harris and David Robinson ("The Admiral") will help close it out.

SECOND EDIT: Came across this article from MySA talking about their new building. It's a few days old but I just now saw it. MySA is such a joke of a website now I hardly go on there. Jakle is not a great columnist either but at least she has contacts. It features a pic of the new set though. Not impressed.

    http://www.mysanantonio.com/entertainment/entertainment_columnists/jeanne_jakle/article/WOAI-anchors-sad-to-exit-downtown-5961351.php

Also WOAI is getting a new morning meteorologist on Monday, Jeannette Calle. I am surprised they hired somebody honestly. I thought Mike Hernandez was going to be permanently on mornings considering he was in promos and everything but I guess not.

  12.

I take it WOAI is modifying their logo as well... It's about time!

if they are it will probably suck, the current logo is very nice and characteristic of the market and they have used a version of the same 4 for nearly 20 years. can't wait to see what they'll go with

and there can't be a seamless transition from one facility to the other? why do you have to go off air for the weekend? I will be watching at 10.

Also where are you getting Sunday from? It said in that tweet you linked to they will be there Monday.

EDIT: it looks like the morning show was their last show downtown. Interesting to see what they're going to do at 10. The thing that sucks is, they never told their viewers they were moving and which date. Basically they blindsided them and screwed them over. I knew it was coming in December but not today. I doubt most of their viewers knew.

EDIT #2: Never mind, they are currently airing a live newscast. I had to walk to the other room to confirm it. I guess at 10 they will do one last show.

  13.

KABB went to the new look some time around the 7th or 8th. They've reversed the L3s so that they're blue text on a white background, and it wouldn't surprise me if WOAI gets the white-on-blue ones that most (all?) other Sinclair stations have been using.

    I never really noticed that...

You're right though. I really need to get some video up...

  14.

Rollouts will start the second week in January for the Original & New Gannett Groups. This update is only for the lowerthirds. They won't be taking up much of the screen anymore, time and temp will be relocated. I'm sure viewers will like the updated format.

The Lone Star Stations (London) will start the transition to the Gannett graphics package starting in January, but probably won't roll out until the mid March or even April.

Will they still get chopped off the screen?
