  1. It's insane that WABC is marketing "ABC7NY" as the name of the website, without the ".com". It makes absolutely no sense, as it seems to just be the station itself. "7online" is clearly a web entity. At the end of an article about Joe Torres traveling to the Vatican, it says he's going to provide continuous updates to "ABC7NY." Here lies the issue- there is no designation between the television coverage and the entity of the website. You don't see WCBS saying "go to CBSNewYork" instead of "CBSNewYork.com" or WNBC saying go to "NBCNewYork." 7online worked just as the Fox "mycity" format works. Huge mistake to not have it marketed as ABC7NY.com

  2. Any word on the new graphics package debut?

I spoke with a source at WABC who directly deals with creative services, who said that the report of new graphics and music this month are unsubstantiated- there is nothing planned in the near future.

  3. Several of the FOX owned stations seem to do that... Win demos while getting crushed in overalls, I have no idea why that is. Has WNYW drastically improved it's news product?

Not really... I would say it's more human interest (ratings driven) stories

  4. Just a thought... What if they did away with the "LIVE!" branding for Kelly and Michael, and made them the 3rd hour of Good Morning America, followed by the 4th hour with Lara and whoever would co anchor with her...

  5. I was trying to figure out why the quick cast graphics look familiar... and then it hit me... They are basically just a bigger version of the PIX11 graphics package... flat, boring L3 bar with a line at the end and the info bar above the L3. This particular graphic mini package looks way too basic and huge to be an on-air package, but the general direction of the new promos and the quick cast is intuitive and tasteful renditions of the flat-UI look. Wouldn't be surprised to see new on-air graphics this year ... this August will be 4 years with the package.

  6. Honestly the only thing that annoyed me about the promo was the poor execution of the song- if the jingle were better, then the promo would be better. The concept is no different than anything WABC or WNBC have ever done- turning news into "entertainment."

And no offense to any of the talented meteorologists we have- but for example, Amy Freeze does the "Freeze Factor..." not scientific and it is advertised as such. But at the same time, Amy is one of, if not the most, qualified meteorologist in the market.

If WCBS found a niche in its coverage of severe weather, which is arguably very good, and Lonnie's thing is to roll up his sleeves, then so be it. It is just a way that the viewers connect with the personalities. It doesn't "make the weather department look mediocre," it is something that kind of just happened once, viewers took a liking to it, and now it's a thing- it doesn't degrade the forecasts that Lonnie and the weather team issue, it's just something for fun and connection. I would be very careful about criticizing someone like Lonnie just because he doesn't hold the degree. On principle, fine. But don't try and claim his forecasts are any less reliable than the other stations, because in the end, they are all within literally 2 degrees of each other and in the same ballpark when discussing snow, etc.

If you're going to criticize the integrity of the weather department, do it based on the actual forecasts, not a promo.

  7. WTVD literally just got new graphics last year... And WABC is definitely due for an upgrade, at least following the track of the last upgrade schedule. That, and they now have the oldest package in the market. And honestly, they have aged compared to the other stations (at least change the font) I said last year that the KABC graphics would look great for WABC, and I stand by that.

  8. Honestly, it isn't the new direction of the news division in my opinion and obviously many people on TVNT share this opinion. That's why I was actually surprised when they transferred The View to the news division. Over on the thread for World News Tonight, there is almost a consensus that David Muir is taking WNT in a whole new direction (slowly, but that's all part of maintaining existing viewers)... The real problem is that people on here expect the Walter Cronkite era- news, and that's just not what the American public wants, and this is evident by the ratings for CBS News. Good Morning America and Today are not designed, nor are they expected, to be hard-news programs. They both do better than CBS, and that's because the fact of the matter is that nobody wants hard investigative journalism, etc when they wake up in the morning. But they are able to snap into news coverage when warranted, and that's all that matters. (I know some of you won't agree, but this is just my opinion based on the continuing trend of ratings across all programs)

  9. Yes, there are national consequences, but not until election night, and on a broad scale. Every little race is irrelevant and needs no real mention until some nutjob candidate goes off his rocker. And, let's be honest, this has been a fairly uneventful election, despite the potentially important outcome.

And that's the purpose of local news... To pick up where the networks leave off... It's almost pointless to cover it nationally due to the fact that the network can't cover every race... It would even be difficult to cover the battleground states
