1. I mean, it's not bad from a technical standpoint - the animations are okay, the shadowing is decent, and the "news source" photo wrapping around the 8 is actually pretty clever and well-executed. But from a raw design standpoint, it reminds me of my own work from years ago - and not in a good way. So...yeah, ouch for sure.
2. Awesome finds! There's a 6 PM with BNW lurking in there too...
3. That music has shown up in a promo before (don't remember where that is). Nice to finally see the open! It definitely is a really good one...one of the few I've seen where the "streak" design motif age well.
4. From November 1, 1995, CBMT's NewsWatch...in 60 FPS!
5. From 1972 and KABC, it's Eyewitness News, the 11 O'Clock Report... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=EG3cWLXAYbs;m=1;s=35
6. Interesting...so Fresh News came after Signature? Paging @Raymie to explain...
7. This has The One For All's signature, but it's too early to be the WMGM pack. I think this is an update to the original package that we've just never seen before. Seems the NMSA was a bit too hasty reassigning WVIT's listing to The Hour... (And on that note, yet another example of packs or signatures hopping between stations.) And Beyond strikes again...that song has turned up in some very random places. (Including my personal playlist.)
8. Ah, Pinnacle. One of the most underrated packages 615 has ever made...
9. That's a bit more than just KTVB in there...before it is a complete KYEL broadcast from not too long before. Given the common theme (Jim Lemon of KGUN as the anchor), I think we can definitely say now that that's actually his channel.
10. I had a feeling they'd used that pack, given the logo (which survived a fair bit longer). The real surprise for me is the music - FUEL, an early Groove Worx package originating from the little Wichita station that could, KCTU. Possibly a local production? Melody doesn't ring any bells, and the production sounds just a little too kitschy for something from the big names. Meanwhile, it seems KVOA really didn't get the memo that News Series 2000 was long in the tooth. If this date is correct, and a little bit of Googling suggests it is, it actually did make it to 2000 (!). EDIT: Mr. NMSA says that this is actually NS2K+, and that this was his reminder to move the audio around.
11. WVEC in 1987 - we'd only seen a partial clip from this series of opens until now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=TEFvv31DoV0;t=26
12. Wow, the voiceover copy on the first WOWT open sounds like it was written by the Department of Redundancy Department. "Now...this is Channel 6 News - Now!" Not very well thought out.
13. That ITV jingle to the tune of Take a Look nearly made my eyes bug out. What a spectacle of a part!
14. Yes they do, and an hour of it to boot, 11 PM to midnight.
15. KAPP in 2002 with In-Sink... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=u26dEy9EsEs;t=32 These graphics were created by one Kurt Murphy, who wrote an 8 part series (start with "Choosing the Logo" and go up) for the website Creative COW taking an in-depth look at their creation. Very, very helpful for someone like me who enjoys fiddling with After Effects...
16. You have to give them a little credit - that X is a very nice nod to the searchlights of old. Not that the logo in general isn't overkill...
17. WJLA in 1980...with the synth version of the WNT theme? C'est vrai: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=WcNBL0dwBvE;m=1;s=52
18. The sound doesn't match with Network's typical instrumentation...I know I've heard the theme somewhere else before, but I can't remember for the life of me just where. It was relatively contemporary with WAGA's usage of it though. I wonder if it was their actual theme at the time, or a one-off for the eclipse. If it was their actual theme, it might explain the odd dates given on this video... EDIT: It wasn't just a one-off... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=2g1u2g8XAvE;m=4;s=30
19. And there it is, the proof for the hypothesis I had after the Tuesday KNBC pack turned out to be unrelated to NewsCenter II...they were, after all, the earliest users of the theme (if you go by the NMSA anyway). This has got to be the cheesiest campaign I've heard in a long while...probably a good reason we've never seen any off-air recordings of it in use. Yeesh. Yes they did, and even earlier than the description says: That animation was a bit ahead of its time, to be sure (a stark contrast to the minimalist approach WMAQ would take a few years later).
20. I can't give you any specifics, unfortunately, but I can definitely tell you it was not a custom NBC piece... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=PynFhHEfa8s;t=29
21. WLBZ in 1988. Note the slight Telesound-esque influence... (and the loooong close full of 80's Gari goodness)
22. WCVB in 1979...at last, the original And You open is seen in use! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=2gVwlOaybrQ;m=10;s=33 There's also this gem - KIMA Newsbeat in 1981. Get a load of the music - the incredibly funky "Free Yourself, Be Yourself" by The Brothers Johnson. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=VWkpuohs2rg;m=2;s=51
23. Note the background behind that bumper at 1:48 - it's from a (presumably) syndicated graphics pack , among others. (WVII also used it, but not in their opens.) EDIT: That video also took me to this - The Image Leader! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=bzIxqfhTs0E;m=5;s=5
24. Hmm...it's definitely conceivable. Not much of a stretch for the signature to spell "K-O-B-T-V", and they're definitely the earliest by far known user. I suppose they would have replaced News 88 with it - which incidentally adds more pre-1988 usage for that theme (the voiceover progression makes sense for this chronology).
