TWC has quietly launched a new DTC streaming service (known simply as “The Weather Channel TV App”), which is structurally similar to its TV Everywhere app and offers a live linear feed of the channel as well as local weather information (the “My Weather” feature where this is accessible is somewhat similar to the TWC interactive weather apps on DirecTV and Dish) and on-demand content.

It is available for $2.99/month or $29.99/year, after a seven-day trial. At launch, it is available mainly as a Smart TV on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Samsung Smart TV, and Xfinity Flex devices. It’s not clear if this is a replacement for the planned Weather Channel Plus service announced last year.

I'm probably gonna join this service at some point. I miss The Weather Channel but not the 8PM-5AM stuff they air. I can wholly do that without.

I know it's come and gone a few times. KFSN just launched a 7pm streaming newscast, so unless it simulcasts on the other station (like KTRK's 9pm show), I'm guessing the off-network OTA newscast is gone.

Oh I totally forgot about that. Damn.

When did KMSG-LD (the MyNetwork successor to the now religious-KAIL) drop KFSN's 8pm news? Tried to record it tonight and they now have an hour of NewsNet in its place?

Maybe the contract ended and the super cheap folks at Cocola opted not to renew. That company is CHEAP.

I think KFSN is still producing it? At last check on the schedules, KMSG still airs an hour of news at 8pm. Unless something has changed. Let me know.

Orlando only has 4 English language news operations (WESH/WKCF, WKMG, WFTV/WRDQ, WOFL/WRBW).

Charlotte is a unique market and its because of WCCB.

Ahem... Spectrum News 13 says hello.

Not sure, but WDVM (formerly WHAG) has added the "25" back into promotions - not part of the logo or the newscast name (yet), but I suspect it's to re-emphasize the channel number, as more people cut the cord, plus WDVM is being introduced OTA into the DC market proper via both a transmitter relocation as well as being added as "guest" subchannel on WFDC (which has WDCA as a channel-share)...

    Jim

Not only that, its also simulcast via WDCW's transmitter on 25.1, so you have WDVM on 25.1 via WDVM and on 25.1 via WDCW.

Raleigh's WNCN (CBS 17) has found it's new main anchor. Former WFLA NewsChannel 8 anchor/reporter Rod Carter tapped to take the helm as the stations 5:00, 6:00 & 11:00pm anchor alongside Angela Taylor. Carter's first day was yesterday. So, this is how the new news lineup looks like for CBS 17 News.

    • Bill Young and Randi Ayala anchor weekday mornings, 4:30 to 7 a.m., with Bill Reh at weather and Laura Smith at traffic.
    • Bill Young is back at noon, with Liz Ortiz, and Reh is still on for weather.
    • Angela Taylor and Rod Carter anchor 5, 6 and 11 p.m. with Wes Hohenstein at weather.
    • Taylor and Russ Bowen anchor the 5:30 p.m. broadcast, along with Hohenstein at weather.
    • On weekends, Holden Kurwicki anchors at 6 a.m. (plus 7 a.m. on Sundays) and Melissa LeFevre has weather.
    • Maggie Newland anchors the Saturday and Sunday 6 and 11 p.m. news, with Nick Sturdivant, and Brian Hutton Jr. is on weather.

One problem with that: Brian Hutton Jr. is leaving WNCN for WTAE-TV/Pittsburgh very soon.

A 5:30 show called Empire State Tonight would seem logical on all NY Nexstar stations.

I don't see that happening. It works in a small state like West Virginia but not in a big state like New York.

Likely related to Columbus, Cedar Rapids and Dayton; WCHS is Sinclair, WVAH is Cunningham. Both are on UHF, so there's otherwise no technical reason for it.

Same with Beaumont. Notice the trend...

The network affiliate that's sister to the main one gets moved to the main one on a subchannel of Sinclair, not on a sidecar of Sinclair but actual Sinclair itself so that it can get away with FCC regulations and everything.

Talked about this on the Discord, and I'll share it here. Nexstar could launch an airport network consisting of NewsNation content (live broadcasts, highlights from the show, national travel forecasts, NewsNation Now, and the soon-to-be-launched Banfield) and local content (live newscasts, local forecasts, and other local programming) from the Nexstar station in the airport's DMA.

One problem... I live in a market where Nexstar doesn't exist so MIA, FTL and even PBI (Palm Beach) will have nothing. In fact, the closest airport that could see something like this is TPA (Tampa Bay).

News from Miami: Sunbeam continues to be the center of the universe with its offshoots every which way

WTVJ - NBC 6 - hires two new anchors for its morning team (first reported January 6)

Both incoming talent have notable Miami experience.

Constance Jones comes from WRIC in Richmond as its evening anchor after roughly two years there.

Before that, she spent less than a year at Atlanta's WAGA and nine years at Miami's WPLG.

Here's hoping she can settle back in in familiar territory.

Kris Anderson comes from Sunbeam's WHDH in Boston as its morning anchor after seven years.

The Miami native launched his career as an intern at WSVN.

The official morning team was Roxanne Vargas, Sheli Muniz (both anchors), Kristin Sanchez (traffic), and Adam Berg (weather).

Since (what I believe) the pandemic began, NBC 6 made changes that they failed to officiate, so I had skepticism that this was their permanent direction.

    Here's a summary:

    • Roxanne and Sheli were moved to noon & 4PM (and will now stay there)
    • Kristin became co-anchor
    • Johnny Archer joined Kristin as co-anchor from weekend evenings (now since solo anchored by Alina Machado or Keith Jones)
    • Kelly Blanco assumed traffic duties (in conjunction with entertainment and features reports)

The new anchors are expected to join this current morning team in February, with roles shifting around (and also making for quite a large group).

I don't think WTVJ will be able to challenge the market leaders but regardless, hopefully it will make for a stronger operation.

Kelly did traffic but must have kicked her off for entertainment and features when Kristin arrived but is now back to her original job in the morning.

And no, this will do nothing to challenge their rivals. Just like their other newscasts, WTVJ is a solid third. Still beats WFOR in the morning, but still... a solid third.

If your in Miami, your either watching Today in Florida or the Local 10 Morning News in the morning. There's no either unless you hate both. 😂

The morning weather when Snedeker is on makes a graphic artist like myself CRINGE.  The 7-Day looks slapped together by a 5 year old. Nothing in-line, differing fonts, the boxes just put wherever. 🤢🤢

Not to mention, in the AM and Noon, Temperatures for all days are displayed "High/Low", but in all other dayparts, it's "Low/High".  Why?

I realize WNEP can get away with most anything it seems in the TEGNA empire, but my god, I wonder if anyone at corporate pays attention to their broadcasts.

Technically they are still on 40.2. The reason they’ve kept the name is probably because of brand recognition. And if they were to rebrand, I think ABC Central Alabama would make more sense.

But as far as I'm concerned, no ABC affiliate in the state is called ABC Alabama just yet. They have an opportunity here.

Today marks the 24th anniversary of the launch of ABC 33/40 in Birmingham.

At the time, it was a merger of WCFT TV-33 in Tuscaloosa and WJSU TV-40 in Anniston, coupled with a low-powered station in Birmingham, WBMA-LP.  This also merged the two markets into Birmingham, and eventually made WBMG (now WIAT) the sole CBS affiliate for the now-combined market.  WNAL was supposed to be the "second" station, but that went to WJSU instead....they served as the CBS affiliate for the remaining tenure of Anniston-Gadsden's time as a separate market.

Allbritton would continue to run the stations until their merger with Sinclair.  "33" and "40" were sold off to Howard Stirk at the last second after Sinclair tried some antics to "own" them outright, but decided to give up the licenses unless a buyer was found.  Today, the station is avaiable on WBMA-LD, WABM-DT2, WDBB-DT2, and is still simulcast on Stirk-owned WGWW-DT2 (the former WJSU or "40")

Several staff members are still there today, including anchor Brenda Ladun, and of course, the venerable James Spann who had departed WBRC for their switch to Fox as part of this launch.

My god. Just be called ABC Alabama already and call it a day. Why they're still called ABC 33/40 without actually being on 33 and 40 makes no sense to me.

Umm... what?! You freaking serious? Show that to FTVLive so that people can read it and ridicule the company. They deserve all the ridicule and hatred they get. Also, it does mention Maria Athens a few times. What is she like, the co-owner of the company or something? Good grief.

The promo began airing when Chuck returned to 30 Rock last week.  He is also standing throughout the news cast as well.

Darlene is on vacation this week.    I'm assuming when she returns, she will be in the studio as all other anchor teams now are.

I'm so glad he's healthy and safe. We need Chuck! We need him in 2024 so he can mark 50 years at WNBC. He is more than an icon, he is a LEGEND, not just in New York but in the entire broadcasting industry. Keeping him safe at home was a good temporary move so that he can continue to anchor at 6:00 p.m. on WNBC for years to come.

Adding to that, I do see on the Raycom sites, Gray has gotten rid of the "livestream" for a different streaming software, similar to the legacy Gray sites use.

    For example: WVUE & KCBD.

    __________

Also, we have another M&A. I guess Gray is going after MeTV in Midland.

It wants to acquire MeTV station KWWT from Winstar Odessa, Inc., and Cozi TV LP, KMDF-LD from Martin Weiss for $1.84M collectively.

They're seeking a "failed station waiver" to acquire KWWT because Gray already owns the full power CBS station KOSA and "satellite station" KCWO.

KWWT was the former CW affiliate before it was moved to a subchannel of KWES in 2013.

KCWO is actually a separate station carrying The CW. It's not a satellite station of KOSA.
