  1. I think of the video footage from Hurricane Andrew where Brian Norcross and the studio crew went in to the small space to the side of the main set where they broadcasted for many hours during the storm and how they KNEW what was going to happen. Let's face it -- Florida has its share of tropical systems.

Mississippi, unfortunately, has had its share of tropical systems, but nothing like Hurricane Katrina (often compared against Hurricane Camille). WLOX-TV remained in their studio until it was almost too late. When the station's microwave/Doppler radar tower fell was the deciding factor to "get the Hell out of dodge" and into a small corner in another part of the building where they had two chairs, a camera and a computer.

  2. I'd actually like to see Raycom or Gray buy one of the stations in that group. At this point I think the main discussion should be the amount of money that would have to be spent to get any of those stations up to modern standards. One visit to their group website and it gives you instant heartburn more less watching a television news broadcast.

  3. In regards to WABG, from looking online it appears they are buying the entire Commonwealth Broadcast Group -- WXVT will be owned by John Wagner and operated by Cala Broadcast Partners thereafter. WABG and WNBD's sale is pending solely to Cala Broadcast Partners.

I predict the "same ole sh--" with WXVT/WABG/WNBD. Any bets?

  4. That's a good one!! I loved watching Bert from junior high to high school whenever I came to Jackson and at Jackson State. There was no one else like him in Mississippi. I'm sure gonna miss him.

I'll make this the last Bert post. This was six years to the day:

  5. Jackson, MS TV icon Bert Case, 76, passed away Thursday afternoon in a Jackson hospital. Bert recently celebrated 50 years in television broadcasting, most notably for his time at WLBT and most recently at WAPT up until his death. He was hospitalized on September 1, 2015 after a diagnosis of sepsis.

Most people around the country know him for chasing off a pit bull in the streets of Jackson or for his investigative reporting into the cheating scandal of former Mississippi Governor Kirk Fordice who had a choice of words for Bert in a confrontational interview at the late-Governor's mailbox in Madison County.

WAPT reports that funeral arrangements are underway at this time.

Please keep the family and the Jackson DMA in your thoughts and prayers.

  6. WABG in Greenville/Greenwood MS in 1999, VERY Small Market Looking even for 1999, Especially the Talent Open

KKYK-LP, the WB Affliate in Little Rock in 1999, Only lated a few Months and was a Virtual Set, Very Obvious

WSAZ in Charleston/Hunington West VA, not a bad open, just the fact that they are using Balls & Walls in 2002, Way Outdated,

WIVT in Bingahtom, NY the Logo was done back in 1998 and is still used and some of the graphics even though full daliy newscasts have been gone since 200

KOTA in 1999!!! Yes, 1999 FR!! they ran like this till may of 2000 but this is still Very Outdated!!

KTVF in Fairbanks in 2002. WTH is this open, like what is going on here

WABG just needs an owner that gives a damn about news and presentation rather than being concerned with owning every station in town.

  7. Morris' WXXV is adding a Noon newscast on its NBC channel beginning Feb. 1, 2016. The station recently added a 6-7 a.m. newscast on the NBC channel and a 7-8 a.m. newscast on its FOX channel.

  8. You have to realize that WGNO has ABC competition in Hancock and Pearl River County, Mississippi with Biloxi market giant WLOX who covers those counties in their newscasts even though they are part of the NOLA DMA. Even though WLOX acquired CBS and WXXV acquired NBC on subchannels for Biloxi back in 2012, WWL and WDSU are still factors in South Mississippi as the cable providers still carry them and people still watch those stations over the subchanneled affiliates.

If you stay in a hotel west of Interstate 110 on the Miss. Coast (western Harrison County, Hancock County and possibly Pearl River County), you are certain to have New Orleans stations on cable. Any to the east (western Harrison County, Jackson County and possibly George County) is probably Mobile/Pensacola. That is all in addition to the local stations. Stone County would only carry the local stations...maybe also Hattiesburg/Laurel stations.

  9. Nope. It was horrible ownership WVUE had as an ABC affiliate. They switched owners two or three times in the 80s and 90s.

I'd also say that Emmis Communications wasn't the best owner, but it was a start towards something better and they really stepped up after Hurricane Katrina when their entire building was flooded and had to be gutted, etc. Tom Benson stepped in with the financial support, but I'll never feel like Louisiana Media Company had the understanding of a true newsroom, which as we all know trickles down the line to what we see on television and our mobile devices. Many people don't like Raycom, but they stepped in at the right moment. That's what is lacking from WGNO -- leadership and commitment.

  10. Here's how I would read that ad: No thank you. I don't wanna see the sometimes stupid, idiotic and "wasting my time" stuff and the failure that is News with a Twist. Instead, I rather see the seriousness and the great journalism that is Channel 4's Eyewitness News.

    Seriously, WGNO is a joke.

WWL is undoubtedly the best in the market in all time slots; WDSU continues to be a strong competitor; WVUE has its weak moments, but has made a nice comeback recently and even closing in on WDSU in some timeslots; and WGNO is the ugly stepchild. New Orleans is more than large enough to handle a newscast on that many channels, but Tribune doesn't seem to have any interest in that market (or most of their markets).

  11. I don't know if they'll shut it down... They can always just put regular newscasts on again if it bombs.. At least they are trying to do something different with the format.

NWAT originally started several years ago with one show on Saturday and featured stories that aired during the week. Their news department has not the the best that I know of, but in recent years it has declined to the lowest that I know of. They're always SO far behind the others in ratings as well.

  12. Tribune's WGNO-TV has ditched yet another newscast for its "News With A Twist" format. New Orleans' ABC affiliate now only has a TRUE local newscast from 5:00 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. and again at 11:00 a.m. during the week and 5 & 10 p.m. on Sunday. "News With A Twist" is a news magazine format that is on at 5, 6 & 10 p.m. weekdays and 6 & 10 p.m. on Saturday "that focuses on lighter stories and commentary and utilizes a mostly unscripted format."

  13. David Bernard is well known to many South Floridians from his time at WFOR-TV as chief meteorologist, but most recently he returned to his former stomping grounds -- New Orleans -- where he was the morning meteorologist at WWL-TV prior to moving to WFOR-TV. He has recently been the weekday morning meteorologist for WVUE-TV in New Orleans where he replaced Chris Franklin whose contract was not renewed by WVUE-TV and Raycom Media management. Now David will make another move at the FOX affiliate as Chief Meteorologist. He will be replacing longtime Chief Meteorologist Bob Breck. Bob's retirement is effective beginning March 2, 2016 after 35-years at the station.

Shelby Latino will become FOX 8's new weekday morning meteorologist. She has worked in Greenville, MS and Fresno, CA and is a graduate of Mississippi State University.

Bruce Katz will remain in his current time slots on weekdays and Nicondra Norwood will remain the weekend meteorologist.

  14. Michael Neelly named president, general manager of WAPT-TV

JACKSON, Miss. —Michael L. Neelly, a longtime Hearst Television news executive most recently serving as a news director in Cincinnati and Louisville, has been promoted to president and general manager of WAPT-TV, the Hearst Television ABC TV affiliate serving the Jackson market.

The appointment, effective January 1, 2016, marks a return to Jackson for Neelly, an Ole Miss alumnus who was a photojournalist and producer in Jackson during the early 1990s. He succeeds Stuart Kellogg, who recently announced his year-end retirement after serving as WAPT’s president and general manager since 1991.

“For the last fifteen years, Mike has successfully led two Hearst Television news operations to new heights, building award-winning newscasts, increasing audience, and launching new digital products,” said Jordan Wertlieb, Hearst Television’s president. “His accomplishments, coupled with his strong leadership style and deep Mississippi roots, make Mike an excellent successor to carry on the overall growth and commitment to the local community that has been a hallmark of the WAPT team during Stuart Kellogg’s tenure.”

Neelly has served since 2012 as news director at WLWT-TV, the Hearst Television NBC affiliate in Cincinnati. While there, he helped establish “Making a Difference for Our Youth,” a multi-platform initiative spotlighting issues facing young Cincinnatians, the resources available to them and how viewers can help. He also led a rejuvenation of the news operation, overseeing staff expansion and creating an investigative unit. In recent ratings periods WLWT has ascended to the top of Cincinnati newscast ratings in key demographics and earned a 2015 Regional Emmy Award for Special Achievement: News Excellence -- the market’s first station to receive the award.

Before WLWT, Neelly served for a dozen years as news director at WLKY-TV, Hearst’s CBS affiliate in Louisville, KY. During his tenure, WLKY became Louisville’s news leader, achieving unprecedented ratings growth and earning more than 135 national and regional journalism awards. Between his time at WLWT and WLKY, Neelly himself has been honored with five regional Emmy Awards for News Excellence. He joined WLKY in 1997 as assistant news director.

Prior to Hearst, Neelly served as an executive producer at stations in Fort Myers, FL, and in Portland, ME. He began his television journalism career in 1989 as a freelance photographer for ESPN, CBS and WTBS Sports before moving to Jackson and becoming a producer. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Mississippi at Oxford.

  15. "Stuart Kellogg, president and general manager since 1991 of WAPT-TV, the Hearst Television Inc. ABC TV affiliate serving the Jackson, Mississippi, market, will retire at year-end 2015. The move caps nearly a quarter-century at the helm of WAPT and four decades in television that began as a weathercaster in his alma mater’s town of Syracuse, N.Y. Kellogg’s successor will be announced at a future date."

  16. WVUE announced last night on the 10 pm newscast that former WWL and WFOR meteorologist David Bernard will join the station next month. No word yet on what shift he will do.

    http://t.co/fSDwEM8krR

Looks like Chris Franklin's contract wasn't renewed and its reported his last day is November 20. If this is true then David will be the weekday morning meteorologist.

My apologies if this was already replied to. I didn't see a reply.

  17. It will be interesting to see how similar the efforts are. I'm i'm not mistaken, WHPM is essentially operated out of WGBC in Meridian, which could mean a total simulcast, or even something very much like WHLT has done with their parent station, WJTV in Jackson by inserting local content segments into a newscast fed by the parent station.

This also could explain why there's only an effort to produce a 9pm show as opposed to on at all of the other times for WGBC's .2 (NBC) and WMDN. The last time those stations had news was when WMDN ceased producing it over a decade ago, and a few years prior, they had taken over WGBC's as well by just simulcasting the news on both stations before settling on airing news on just WMDN.

It's a long overdue move that should be an alternative to WTOK for Meridian viewers and that gives both markets a 9pm newscast finally.

I found the new staff on WHPM's website and discovered through research that the newscast for the Meridian station and Hattiesburg station is actually not in-house but is probably going to be recorded. http://www.mygtn.tv/story/11414354/about-us
