Hey, I know you! I saw you on a FB group I'm a part of, and you've become obsessed with NewsNet since it was announced! Do you think it will catch on and move up to major stations?

Just a heads up, this kid is from the Philippines, where all newscasts (I assume) are government regulated. NewsNet is likely this users first exposure EVER to 24-hour US news.

What a bizarre assumption. If that somehow is the case, on behalf of America, I'm sorry.

The website seems to stay up to date, as for the live stream, they seem to let some stories (like the "Across America" segment) & headlines on the ticker repeat for 2 or 3 days before updating it.   I don't quite understand that.  You would think their would be enough content from AP, UPI, or even events across the country that could keep the ticker & the across America segment going for a while.

I do. It's not a professional news operation. That's really all that needs to be said,

  3. Thoughts of watching about as much of this as I could bear:

    - As has been said...lots of VOs/still images/etc. -- horrible.

    - Seemingly ALL of the reporting is CNN packages. I wonder how CNN feels about a "competitor" (at least in its own mind) using its content. How does this interface with CNN market embargos? Would video shot by, say, KTRK, violate it if it airs on the Houston affiliate?

    - Also: does NewsNet have a license to use Elevation nationwide?

"High school announcements with fancy graphics" about sums it up.

  4. Lol. Even calling any of this quixotic would be kind and generous. The only reason MI News 26 has "succeeded" is because its audience is, frankly, a bunch of yokels who have no idea what news is. I've watched the product and it's not like there's a whole lot of boots-on-the-ground reporting aside from the segments that essentially amount to Nonprofit of the Day.

It looks good to a lot of people on here because a lot of people on here don't care about anything beyond nice graphics.

  5. Now what's wrong with MeTV??? It's a GREAT place for classic TV shows (on free TV, no less)!! It's also an opportunity for stations to make extra money (in my market, local ads run throughout the day on the channel)....

    Just saying....

I'm not passing judgement on the network's quality -- but it's a digital subchannel that you always get on satellite, which is a big chunk of viewers. Number two, it's likely buried on cable in most markets. Three, the demographics aren't exactly 25-54.

  6. They did almost a decade ago at 11:30 a.m. but later canceled it.

Most of the CT/MT Hearst ABC stations haven't had middday shows for a while. I know WISN is getting or just got one. KOAT, KOCO and KMBC still don't have one.

  7.

Somewhat off-topic, but speaking of KSHB...their newscast format back then was interesting to say the least.

It was highly experimental. For many stories, instead of an anchor reading a script live, they would voice-track the script over graphics or VO and music. Almost like little 20-30 second packages. The photography and presentation was fascinating as well; music on almost every story, lots of camera tilts, slowed-down shots, zooms.

And don't forget the newscast ending in "SEE YA!"

    It's definitely worth a watch.

It almost reminds me of what Tegna is attempting today in terms of radical changes to traditional newscast formats. (The problem, IMO, is that Tegna is messing with established stations, while KSHB is an upstart, but that's for another thread.).

  8. I can't even see PBB working in PHX because people are too well behaved in AZ.

I'm really kinda shocked that nobody local in the B.A. picked him up. He is also a pretty solid beat reporter.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him make a return to the SF market (if someone is willing to pay up) when his Phoenix contract expires.

  9. Scripps & (TEGNA) have wanted to get rid of high price profile anchors in their respected markets. For TV5 being such a legacy station it current state and most state of Scripps stations suck donkey balls. I understand they have to streamline and that all good and great. However WEWS looks like crap, and Leon Bibb said he working part-time at WKYC.

Yeah, this idea that Tegna is rolling out the red carpet for a vet anchor is crap. He's doing commentary and is probably not getting paid a whole lot to do so.

Tegna has pushed out far more longtime anchors than they've brought in, that's for sure. Seems like half the people at KING are like nobodies now. (Hip nobodies)

  10. Not sure why people are debating what time slots “work” for news. This has nothing to do with ratings or trying to “win”.

It’s the midterm elections this fall. That is why they are doing this.

After the elections, a lot of these newscasts will likely go away. They will not “fail”, they accomplished their mission to bring in political ad revenue. Previous “failed” newscasts in these time slots? Look closer, they probably happened during an election year.

It’s all about the money. It’s always about the money.

    Yep.

If you're wondering why so many Hearst stations have primetime newscasts on freakin' MeTV (particularly on KETV and KCCI, both of which reach Iowa) or the Raycom stations with news on Bounce...this is almost certainly why.

Politicians will spend money on anything that's a newscast.

  11. I accidentally posted it in the Holy graphics knockoff thread, but I think this news open can show you how mis-matched it is.

I don't think the open is bad...

But KSTP somehow managed to use every VO guy of this era save for Charlie Van Dyke.

If you listen to the opens on NMSA, it starts with Ernie Anderson, then Roger Thompson, then John B. Wells, then Chapin. 4 VOs in a 5 year span. (and those are just the ones we know about!)

  12. By "quality", I think he meant pushing out veteran talent for young talent, and "social media-driven" newscasts has somewhat taken over. I may be wrong about this..

Scripps is like trying to be Tegna-lite in that regard.

  13. I dunno... to me it sounds more like "The Paramount" (a Gari package intended for UPN stations in the late 90s, and only WKBD ever got a lot of use out of it-- WTOG and KSTW had their news ops shuttered shortly after they adopted the package), but it does sound a bit Crane-ish as well.

If it were a Gari piece it probably would have been included in that master list. Plus...Gari made such liberal use of elements from other packages that there would have been some cut in this that was part of a Gari "template" (searching for a better word here).

  14. Is it just me, or has WAVY had a lot of turnover as of late? Like, I know reporters come and go, but WAVY used to be a stable market choice, and a lot has changed around there...

    It's called Nexstar...

  15. It's becoming clear Nexstar is phasing them out. Although I'd be curious to figure out what they could have come up with for the ex-MG markets?

    Good riddance.

Seems like Nexstar was getting less cute with them even before they started phasing them out. LasVegasNow/MyNDNow/etc actually sounded like news websites versus the goofy "Xproud/Xmatters/weareX.com"

  16. 2 NewsTeam was never used outside of the promos as this was a transitional look for WMC-TV that lasted for a short time before Bert Ellis WSB-ified the station months later.

Interesting. Wonder if there were plans to use it further or if it was just solely to be used as a topical cut.
