Looks like February 2022 will go down as the end of an era at WAVY, as in addition to Don Slater stepping aside to become chief meteorologist emeritus; sports director Bruce Rader, the longest on-air person ever in the Tidewater region, is retiring at the end of this month.

    https://www.wavy.com/sports/local-sports/a-letter-from-bruce-rader-to-hampton-roads/

As someone who was born and raised in Hampton Roads for 21 years (1990 -2011) I was mostly a WVEC-TV watcher with most of my intrest as a child was into weather and Jeff Lawson but when I was 9 (1999) I began to also start following sports and was always amazed when I started switching to WAVY-TV and Mr. Bruce Rader. I always enjoyed the way he looks at sports and it carried with me when I moved to Pittsburgh in 2011 and began to work in the Pittsburgh Sports scene. Bob Pompeani (KDKA-TV) has always reminded me of my childhood when I began to care about sports as a career but I owe my gratitude to Bruce Rader for gaining my intrest as a kid and always providing the best sports coverage in Hampton Roads for 45 years. If it wasn't for Bruce, I don't know if I would be working in sports to this day.

Not an insider here, but I live in the markets. Two more Nexstar stations are getting made over, at least on sets, but not sure about graphics.

Though...can't imagine why they wouldn't, seeing as what the two stations are: the other two major stations that Nexstar got from the WVMH buyout. They redid WOWK 13 in Charleston, WV.

Now it's the other two stations' turn. WBOY in Clarksburg, WV, and WTRF in Wheeling, WV. One of the WTRF weather broadcasters posted some images of the old set being taken down in place of the new one

To me, I don't know what will come of these stations' new sets, though I'm glad to see at least Nexstar is getting rid of one of the last remnants of the WVMH days for those stations. I know the general consensus is that Nexstar's money isn't exactly burning holes in their pockets, but ANYTHING is a step up for these stations from what they had when WVMH took them over. The first package was HORRENDOUS. Not sure what they were thinking they were doing with those graphics when they had a ready made package that WOWK had that looked ten times better - and WOWK's was downgraded to that thinking that was somehow better. The HD graphics (the ones they use now) were a step up but have outlived their usefulness. I think you can see if you look at one of WTRF's newscasts that their lower thirds are a mess of things because they don't know where to put things.

Not sure about the Clarksburg market and where WBOY is there, but I'm hoping Nexstar is looking at WTRF and sees how it has played second fiddle to Sinclair owned WTOV in that market for YEARS and has had to get beaten up both in ratings and in WTOV's promos always taking shots at them. Maybe a chance for a bigger name behind them than they were ever used to having will be what they need.

There are a LOT of places in the Northern Portion of West Virginia (Wheeling and  Morgantown) Along with Steubenville Ohio that can also get the Pittsburgh PA locals OTA as well. If WTRF/WBOY wants to compete. They have to not only look at WTOV and WDTV but also KDKA-TV, WTAE, and WPXI.

WTRF and WBOY has a great chance to take over their markets with this revamp if Nexstar does it right because both WTOV and WDTV haven't updated their sets in a while.

I thought this was pretty common knowledge long before this story came out. I guess the show stays on due to the relatively high ratings it still gets. I only watch on occasion as some of the stories are interesting at times.

Sounds like Dr. Phil will fall in line with the rest of the ViacomCBS troublemakers of the last several years which includes  Dan Schneider, Les Moonves, Charlie Rose, Peter Dunn, and David Friend. Get in Line Phil McGraw.

  4. WTAE is switching up its weekday anchors in Early March. https://triblive.com/aande/movies-tv/tv-talk-janelle-hall-moves-to-mornings-on-wtae-as-part-of-shakeup/?fbclid=IwAR3ULZGoDVbizEAc_6BiilK-fXJasD2XGSNGdNY8CKynxY4XsEexehnFv84

Former 6 PM and 11 PM anchor Janelle Hall rejoins the morning team from 4:30 AM - 7 AM with Michelle Wright , Ryan Recker, Ashley Dougherty & Elena LaQuatra

Noon Remains the same with Elena LaQuatra and Ashley Dougherty/Jeff Verszyla rotating

4 PM Remains the Same with Kelly Sasso, Andrew Stockey, and Jeff Verszyla

5 PM is still Shannon Perrine , Andrew Stockey and Mike Harvey

6 PM now has Kelly Sasso with Mike Clark and Mike Harvey

Channel 4 did not announce who will anchor at 11 p.m. with Mike Clark but Shannon Perrine  would seem like the logical fit in this reconfiguration but WTAE general manager Charles Wolfertz III offered a statement suggesting the position is open.

Channel 4 also named Chandi Chapman the solo weekend evening anchor.

What are the standards for WABC as the flagship O&O and largest market to preempt the national network morning show? I was surprised to see them sort of hastily wrap up the interview with the Suffolk Co. official reporting on the first storm-related death just to toss to a tape-delayed GMA.

Let's be honest. If Breaking News or Severe Weather is happening in any market (I don't care what/where it is) I would rather see the main station air the Breaking News/Severe Weather and a sister station/ subchannel air the main Network programming for that day. Case closed.

KDKA-TV (for example) aired all of the CBS programming on WPCW Friday due to the Bridge Collapse/President Biden being in town. It can be done right if every station puts it in their contract with supposed network.

You’re way too obsessed with the black/gold look at KD. Any future new O&O graphics will be standard on KD and not black/gold.

Your probably right but ev1 else thinks the black and gold KDKA has is weird but it has grown on me for some reason. It just looks like the CBS oddball. I hope it stays that way.

I like the new CBS News look overall (even though I don't care for the name) but the CBS NEWS bug is too wide. They seem intent on keeping the small eye the same size and position across all broadcasts (news, primetime, etc.) but I wish they could have come up with a better solution.

Hopefully, we will see this graphics package transfer to the O&Os. I can't wait to see what the CBS eye could look like in the black and yellow KDKA-TV package. The New Streaming Station logos look good though. Here is CBS News Pittsburgh.

  8. According to Lilly Broadcasting's main office in Erie PA, WZMQ found out about the switch on Tuesday and had to switch on Friday. They are still trying to figure out what to do with WZMQ. Expect the CBS Network to switch to 19.1 soon and MeTV to go to 19.2. It won't stay the way it is. There Isn't a direct number for the Station but there is an online contact fourm

I'm surprised they kept her up for as long as they did. I know it's the top of the newscast and a main story they're covering, but they couldn't shift to the next report and give her time to regroup and then come back to her?

Also that accent of hers had me feeling like I was back home and I had to look her up. Sure enough, Tori Yorgey is a Philly-area native.

Tori is headed to Hearst Station WTAE in Pittsburgh on Feb 1st, a station who always has photographers with their reporters. BTW, she should sue WSAZ and Gray for this.    https://www.post-gazette.com/ae/tv-radio/2022/01/12/tori-yorgey-wtae-tv-reporter-penn-state-philadelphia/stories/202201120128

And WNCN has launched their 4:00 pm newscast. No more temperature, just time. The open seems to be some in-house modifications of the generic Nexstar CBS open. New VO, but I can't tell who. CBS Local remains, but now they're using the same cuts as WKYT.

Does Nexstar Really think they will be able to compete against the unbeatable WRAL and ABC O&O WTVD? If I were Nexstar, I would sell this station to CBS Already. Raleigh is a growing market and how poor this is proves that either Nexstar has given up or doesn't care. CBS could do so much better if this station was an O&O again.

For a couple of newscasts last night and today, YouTubeTV blocked out the newscast timeslots as "not being cleared for the internet".

This happens every now and then for certain programs, and it's likely a scheduling thing that stations/channels can take advantage of when they know they don't have the right to stream it over the internet (usually some sports and music shows, and the occasional movie or two)

And given it's newness, "Fox 46 News" was still on the schedule, then it was replaced by "To Be Announced" and then "Queen City News", which triggered the block.

The 4pm is on now, and its "To Be Announced" and is working normally.  "Queen City News" is on at 5pm, so we'll see if it works....

Hopefully it's just an oversight given the pain changing guide schedule can be, and there's likely layers of approval that programs have to submit to be cleared for all users on all devices.

Then again, I'm "In" Charlotte watching YTTV like a local, with some "location assistance".

Just with Nexstar being Nexstar treating streaming TV like an invalid, is it an oversight or by design?

The ignorance of these companies in regards to streaming is horrendous. When the cable companies go out of business, these companies will be in a lot of trouble.

Hi Kenneth, as someone who lives in Charlotte I can tell you that Queen City is a well known name for Charlotte.  QC or Queen City has been used heavily for decades. WBTV has two daily shows with Queen City in the title (QC Mornings and QC@3) plus an entire digital initiative called QC Life. WKQC-FM put QC in their calls way back in 2003. There's more examples but you get the point: Charlotteans are very familiar with Queen City. Besides I don't think out of town visitors are a factor in developing a brand geared toward locals. I'm not defending what I view as very messy branding...just sharing some background from a local on the Queen City nickname.

Thanks @carolinanews4 for your response. This does bring up another question however. Will WBTV/Gray get rid of the QC branding in their newscasts or sue Nexstar for using "Queen City"? Something to keep in mind here as well.

So no one is complaining how tacky using two different VOs? Basically on the same line.

Beau Weaver on the open & Steven Kamer on the tease. Pick One or the other. That's tacky as hell.

And I guess they can't get it straight for their non-news branding either... Suppose to be "Fox Charlotte", but you clearing see "Fox 46" logo on the bug. They surely can't make up their minds.......

Another reason I consider this a KDKA clone is the Steven Kamer  VO.
