    Rather Breaking News in Alaska....

    https://www.ktva.com/story/42439484/gci-sells-ktva-to-gray-television

GCI sold its CBS programming to Gray and Gray immediately moved the CBS affiliation to their already owned Channel 5 to create CBS 5 Anchorage.

    IAFSZR5YFJGVDHCSF4UGZZR5OM.thumb.jpg.e1504a476eda460f8fea9c482af76193.jpg

Note to point out that Gray already owns NBC station KTUU.

    https://www.ktuu.com/2020/07/31/ktuu-expands-into-southeast-alaska-and-kyes-launches-cbs5-anchorage/

Gray also bought the CBS Southeast Alaska stations and NBC Southeast Stations from GCI as well.

Quote from the Gray produced article. "Through these separate agreements, KTVA’s local news operation will be preserved and enhanced under the stewardship of a pure-play broadcaster that owns leading local news operations in over 90 markets across the country, from Fairbanks, Alaska, to West Palm Beach, Florida."

This also means that (from what I can tell)  Gray now owns all NBC and CBS in the Alaska.

I'm sorry.  But that is the most ugly looking 5 I have ever seen.  Really??? I mean, I know it's Alaska, but still.

Come on now! I actually like this 5! 😀

The logos for KALB in Alexandria, LA (which is now a Gray-owned station) in the 70s were uglier!KALB logo 1978  Screen Shot 2020-01-27 at 9.38.20 PM

I remember watching it live too, but the report interrupted the second round of the U.S. Open Golf Tournament and Brokaw was there because Brian Williams was overseas and set to anchor NN from wherever location he was (I forget at the moment). It took place on a Friday. And yes, I felt the same way about Brokaw's appearance too. Such a sad day.

Brian Williams was anchoring Nightly News from Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan when this happened in '08 (info from Vanderbilt News Archive).....

FTVLive decreed that WKBN meteorologist Alexis Walters was making the jump from weather to primary anchor, and that such a move was something he had never heard of.

    Ummm......Stan Boney?

Not only did he make the move from Chief Met to primary anchor at WYTV, he moved across the hall to WKBN to be an anchor there.

There's also Robin Read at WDBJ in Roanoke, VA. He has been meteorologist there for almost 40 years, but he currently anchors the 6p news as well (he took over as anchor after Chris Hurst left to make a successful run for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates; Hurst was dating Alison Parker when she and Adam Ward were shot to death live on WDBJ in August of 2015).

Here is the 2017 story announcing the move:

One large pre-emption comes to mind of course; when the Up to the Minute team broke into the last minute of a new CSI:NY to relay the death of Yasser Arafat, which boiled the execs at CBS News who had a 'do not break in, just crawl it' order on that death (it happened minutes before 11 p.m., where local newscasts easily could have relayed the news without issue). They did, and the UTTM team apparently lost their pre-emption privileges completely the next business day, with the shot-calling producer fired.

That's not nearly as bad as when the Season 12 finale of Dallas (in 1989) was interrupted twice, first by the declaration of martial law in Beijing, then by live video of officials with the Chinese government ordering the CBS crew to leave the hotel where they were staying (they had been there for the visit of then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to China; the pro-democracy demonstrations there really started to take off around that time).

In this case, CBS considered rerunning the episode, but chose not to, although they did air a short 3-minute recap of the episode before airing a scheduled movie in Dallas' time slot the very next week (at that time, CBS aired movies on Fridays during the summer when Dallas Falcon Crest did not air). On the other hand, in the example of CSI:NY, the network rebroadcast the episode in full two nights later.

FWIW, I did get a chance to see the Dallas episode in question on DVD years later, and it clearly was not one of the show's best episodes or season finales, although it was notable for being Linda Gray's final episode as Sue Ellen Ewing....

PIX is officially going back to Nexstar, for all intents and purposes:

Scripps seems to be doing a lot of selling of late, between this and their podcasts. And while most would concede this was probably the end game for Scripps and Nexstar/Mission, $75M still seems abnormally low for a station in the top media market.

This also means the end of WPIX’s reporters being featured on Newsy’s programming (Newsy is owned by Scripps). But, this also opens the door for the station’s reporters to appear on News Nation on WGN America (it’s not likely they would appear on the program until after the sale of WPIX to Mission goes through, however)...

GMA3: What You Need To Know is such an incomprehensible name, just rename it to ABC Afternoon News or something.

A better name would be ABC World News Midday.

I like ABC World News Midday better. I think this would be the first attempt at a national long-form midday newscast here in the United States. I know the other ABC in Australia has a midday newscast, and I know the BBC has a midday newscast as well in the UK......

It's worth noting that just like Nightline came in the midst of the Iran hostage crisis, What You Need to Know came in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic (although in What You Need to Know's case, it replaced an hour already produced by ABC News [Strahan, Sara, & Keke])....

  7. Alanna Autler is leaving KTVT for law school at the University of Michigan.....https://twitter.com/alanna_autler/status/1275074969706225664

Autler is probably best known for an interview with a Tennessee election commissioner that went viral for all the wrong reasons (he called her a "b----" leading her to respond, "Wow! Do you want to say that again, Mr. Buchanan? Do not touch me. Do you want to say that again for the camera?") Four years later, the unedited interview and confrontation is STILL on WSMV's website.....https://www.wsmv.com/news/unedited-wsmv-interview-with-davidson-county-election-commission-chairman-ronald-buchanan/video_f189f525-fa38-523e-9695-3320a3aff86a.html

WPVI 50 Years of Action News

KVUE News 24 1975. Using the theme from Clockwork orange.

That makes KVUE the third station (that we know of) to use music from A Clockwork Orange as theme music for their newscasts (WVUE in New Orleans and WXIA in Atlanta are the others).

Oddly enough, both KVUE, WVUE, and WXIA were ABC stations back in the mid-70s; the latter two have since switched to other networks, while KVUE remains with ABC......

    It's from a soap site, but here's the Live+7 for mid May.TVrank_0511_05152020_tvratings-3.png

Price is Right, to my knowledge, has ranked in the Top 5 overall among daytime shows for years. Great to see Let's Make a Deal in the Top 5 as well. Note that the Roman numerals I and II are there because CBS counts them as two separate half-hours for ratings purposes (a practice that I think dates back to when Price expanded to an hour in 1975, as it was a half-hour show before that).

This alone shows why we need an extra game show or two on a network in daytime. But maybe that's just me......

One thing I know that Gray will do: fix the stations' websites!

They’re gonna have to put a LOT of work into those websites! That site is so far behind the times, it’s pathetic!

Reminds me of when I worked in radio in the 2000s, the AM station I worked at was still using reel-to-reel and cart machines, and using a severely outdated computer system for automation on the FM side! Both stations have since been sold: the AM is now an EWTN Radio affiliate, and the FM is now a country station (one of 4 in the market)!!

Imagine Tribune keeping WGNX and developed CBS with it, we could've seen a WGNX/WATL duopoly instead.

Not to mention a POSSIBLE entry for Nexstar in the Atlanta market, had Tribune kept WGNX (WGCL).....

Yeah, good luck getting an answer to that question. He rarely responds.

In that case, I will ask you, TVNewsLover, what are the chances of Colleen Campbell moving to a bigger market than where she is at now (WDTV in Clarksburg, WV) in a few years? Would that viral video from 3 years ago still be a factor in her possibly going to a bigger market, if she decides to???

Sinclair stinks. That's the flat out truth.

However, I will give credit where credit is due and in this case, Sinclair did something right for once. And if your asking the question I think you're asking, no... she'll never ever get her job back at KUTV or a job with any other TV news station in Utah ever again.

If she does come back, Wyoming or Glendive would be happy to have her, because that or never on TV again, is where she belongs.

Roly, I am sure you have heard of the case of Colleen Campbell, who was fired from WPHL after going on epic-filled expletive tirade against a Philadelphia police officer that was caught on video. She eventually wound up at WDTV in Clarksburg, WV the next year, and this year will mark two years for her there with thankfully no trouble (she is now chief forecaster on the station's main newscasts).

In Campbell's case, what do you think the chances of her moving to a bigger market would be within the next few years, if she wanted to? Do you think that viral video of her would still be a factor, even though it's been 3 years since it happened?

I'm beginning to wonder if it wouldn't be a bad idea for Nexstar to begin to air WGN's shows on WGN America. With News Nation coming up soon, outside of one Cancon import in two weeks that's new for them, it may be better to do for now than their reruns (and at this this point, the FCC enforcing that Syndex provision is as low a priority as possible in an emergency situation).

This wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. I can see them going piece by piece, starting with their 9p news and then their midday broadcast, which were the newscasts that were broadcast during WGN’s days as a superstation to begin with. I would keep the midday newscast once News Nation begins this summer on WGN America. Now, when things finally do die down with COVID-19, I wouldn’t mind seeing them simulcast the 4-6p news, and if they’re successful, at a much later time, taking a shot at simulcasting the morning news (and boy, I would love to see the big on-air dance party that erupts when that happens 😁😁).....
