With more and more time on the weekend morning show, it's little surprise that Samantha Chatman has been named weekend morning co-anchor. She'll continue in her I-Team duties, which likely means Liz Nagy will remain as a prominent fill-in anchor on weeknights.

    https://www.facebook.com/samantha.chatman/posts/pfbid0ii4aR2kKjcAaPxxcFBRba35ETFxSaRFCfgcK8bhNazEhwW5hketnqidHvLiK4Fi7l

Now, to just clean things up on the weeknight roster. This week, they've gone with a very familiar Ravi/Rob/Ravi at 5, 6 & 10.

That makes the most sense. With Jason Knowles as the other consumer I-Team reporter, she doesn't have stories everyday. So anchoring weekend mornings and reporting during the week makes most sense.

For the weeknight roster, I would love Ravi to get it, but I think Rob is going to get it and possibly Liz getting a permanent weeknight anchor spot. Ravi seems to anchor solo half the weekends during the year as Karen is anchoring less and less which is a shame. Karen should be anchoring on weekdays instead of Cheryl Burton.

What if they hire from outside? I wonder if they’d do that for a lead. The only time in recent memory was when Ron Magers left channel 5…

I don't think they would hire from the outside for the main anchor spot. But for a weekend spot yes. I would like to have Rob, Ravi, Mark and Terrell all have 1 week each to try out for Alan's spot.

JC Navarrete is the new morning anchor.

They should have kept Patrick with Michelle rather than (unofficially) promoting JC. Not sure what the thought process is there (...if there is one).

    Solid choice.

I think when Stefan was brought back, I think they wanted to phase Patrick out. But when Zoraida was in and out a couple of times and then left, it delayed that. I wouldn't be surprise to see Patrick being let go at the end of his contract.

Also, I said this before, still not impressed with Kate Chappell's anchoring. The need to find a stronger fill in anchor and have Kate just report.

Once again, congrats to Alan on a great career, a true Chicago legend. With everyone at the desk for the tributes and the after 10pm hugging, are they ever going to go back to normal and stop social distancing? It was nice seeing the closing of the newscasts pre-pandemic again. This is the only station in Chicago that still does the social distancing and has been the more strict with it throughout the pandemic.

  5. That's it for Alan Krashesky. A true professional, class act of a journalist, reporter and anchor. He had the best retirement speech I've ever heard. Who will be his replacement. I prefer someone who can balance out Cheryl Burton. Rob is good for 4pm and 7pm newscasts as I said before. But. he is not top anchor material and pairing him with Cheryl Burton at 10pm is opening the door for the other stations to catch up in ratings. Ravi, Terrell, and Mark Rivera would be my top contenders for the lead anchor spot. Rob Elgas is not fit for the role. but he'll end up getting it and Ravi gets shafted yet again.

Larry feels least likely, to me. Phil or Tracy (62 & 59, respectively, by my count) could certainly be thinking retirement, and you can never be sure if ABC News doesn't want Greg, or even Cheryl, on a more active basis. The former was in for Ginger, with the A-team, on GMA this morning, while Cheryl was on again, over the weekend. Meanwhile, Mark has work outside of TV, and lives in Wisconsin, so he might not be interested in full-time work, as uprooting his whole family just to move a few dozen miles likely isn't worth the hassle.

Oh, and by the way, @WeatherandTraffic, you mentioned Monday night's anchor arrangement, with Rob jumping Ravi to do the 10 (with Judy)? Ravi was back at 10, last night, and this time Karen took Cheryl's complete shift, doing the late news instead of Judy. Two nights, two different teams.

Cheryl more likely than Greg since his wife's family is in the Chicagoland area. I can see Phil retiring in the near future.

Ravi and Karen/Judy/Liz deserve to be on weekdays and be the lead anchor team once Alan retires. Cheryl Burton and Rob Elgas at 10pm seems like a train wreck for me.

  7. Ravi anchored the 5pm today, but not the 10pm. Disappointed, I like Rob Elgas on the 4pm and 7pm, but he's not lead anchor material. Which is the reason Dick Johnson was the main fill in for Rob Stafford over him when Elgas was at NBC5. Ravi deserves the lead anchor spot. If not Ravi, Terrell and Mark would make better lead anchors than Rob Elgas.

I like Ravi enough and Cheryl needs a really REALLY strong anchor to pair with. Rob is great but not as lead anchor. It’s got to be Ravi or Terrell.

Mark Rivera needs to be put into consideration as well. It would not shock me if they do more anchor shuffles and expand the morning newscast to 4am, with the morning anchors giving up the 11am.

Congrats to Alan, Jim and soon Cheryl Burton on their longevities at the station. Speaking of them, Is there a succession in place when they eventually retire/leave. Dionne is obviously going to take over the Jim.  My guesses are Ravi, Rob or Mark for Alan, and Karen or Judy for Cheryl.

The fact I mention this today is surprising. I suspected Jim to retire first out of the 3 I mentioned.

Well damn, I spoke too soon. Alan JUST ANNOUNCED at the end of the 6pm news that he's retiring on Tuesday, November 22nd.

    Dammit.

Good for Alan. He has been a staple in Chicago for 40 years and a true professional. Hope he has the retirement he deserves.

The fact that Val's presence on the morning show keeps expanding tells me that Terrell can't be ruled out for a promotion, either. I think Rob, Terrell, and Ravi have to all be in the running to move up, in some way. I'm not sure this succession is going to be as clean/obvious as Magers', Yu's, or Brock's were.

I don't know if they would want to move Terrell from the morning show, he has great chemistry with everyone there. Ravi, he deserves the weekday promotion, seeing as he's been there the longest and is another true professional. He also fills in at 10pm more than Rob. Rob doesn't have it in him to be the main anchor at the station. He's good for the lighter newscasts like the 4pm and 7pm. Mark Rivera is the youngest and has to be a contender for a weekday spot to. But as he has never anchored the weekday 10pm, it seems unlikely and has been filling in less lately. We shall see.

    Is...not? She was before?

In the 13.5 months between Ben Bradley's exit and Mark's hiring, Diane Pathieu filled in easily 90% of the time, and she didn't get the job, so I'm not assuming anything. Either way, though, the anchor job listing is off the website, so they are either content with the current mostly Liz/some Cate/a little Sam arrangement, or an announcement is coming.

MEANWHILE, today marks 40 years for Alan Krashesky. Jim Rose hit that milestone, earlier this year (they both got recognition for 35 years in 2017 around Alan's anniversary), and Cheryl Burton will reach 30 years later this month.

I meant to say "Val Warner is NOW a contributing/third anchor for 6am hour in addition to the 7am digital newscast". Also, Liz, Cate and Sam are all great anchors/reporters so I'm cool with any of those 3 getting the spot.

  11. Last week was Samantha Chatman's last week on the morning show as she is going to do more investigated reports. It's not surprising as she had been appearing less often on the morning show. Also, as of yesterday, Val Warner is NOW a contributing/third anchor to the 6am hour in addition to the 7am digital newscast. It seems like Liz Nagy might be getting the weekend AM spot as she's appeared the most often next to Mark Rivera.

The rumors keep growing so might as well make a thread right? With rumors over Savanah's long-ish absence from "TODAY", some say it could mean something more. That potentially being she or Kristen Welker could become the first female moderator since the position's inaugural holder Martha Roundtree. What do y'all think?

    https://www.thedailybeast.com/nbcs-meet-the-press-shakeup-puts-chuck-todd-in-jeopardy

If the rumors are true then good riddance to Chuck Todd. He's not a good moderator and asset to NBC. People on the left, right and center can't stand him. As for Guthrie, MTP would be a promotion for her and Craig Melvin can take her place as Co-Host with Hoda. But it's FTV Live, lets take it with a grain of salt.

  13. What do you guys think of the Digital Newscasts, The morning is great with Terrell, Val, Tracy, Roz plus the fill ins, especially the hot topic conversation in the WCL studio. I really like they include the weather and traffic personal more on the newscast. The 7pm is Cheryl Burtons best newscast as she's more relaxed. Do you think these newscasts are worth it or no? I would rather watch Local in the Morning instead of networks. Also, are they going to end social distancing and go back to normal seating. The newscasts especially the morning and 7pm flow better when everyone is at the desk.

Well if it only took 2  weeks. I wouldnt expect any thing spectacular.  A new desk is likely. But for the most parts the big screens will probably be where they are. They probably just installed some columns and panels to cover the places around the screens and thats about it. Because those pieces could have already started to be fabricated well before. Basically there was actually no set there any more. It was just a desk and several huge screens. And because the space is so cramped we will rarely see any wide shots anyway. NBC no longer seems to want to spend money on any major changes at NBC Tower. WMAQ in my opinion always feels  "off" creatively when you compare it to the other NBC O&O's. It doesnt feel as "big-market" at is should. It hasnt felt that way in years. From the theme music choice. The cheap "bouncing" Michigan Ave camera view behind the anchors. Some their dubious anchor choices. I could go on...but I dont have much hope in anything impressive happening in 2 weeks. And as was said they certainly didnt take over one of the large production studios. So anything is better than the spare looking space they were using, but somehow Im sure WMAQ will make it look cheap.

I agree the set looked really lazy and cheap by the end of its run. They have so many green screens and huge monitors with lack of panels. The afternoon and evening anchors are fine. The morning news saw so much changes within the last 2+ years. Michelle has gotten better but I cringe when Patrick anchors. Plus, Idk why they keep using Kate Chappell as the main weekday fill in, she's not even weekend morning anchor material. They really should start poaching talent from ABC7. Overall, WMAQ has gotten lazy  and cheap with their sets and don't care about trying to catch up to ABC7.

I'm excited for a new set, it has been way overdue. The set they were just on was changed and updated so much that it looked lazy.

Btw Alicia Roman is about to have her baby this month, so i'm guessing Iisha takes weekday mornings while Alicia is on maternity leave, while Pete doubles up on weekends.

I've actually found the 7pm to be Cheryl Burton's best newscast, because I always thought she'd be better-suited for a looser, more conversational, morning-like format. That said, I still agree about her, overall.

Scott not being in the studio makes the banter difficult, and I think Larry and Phil are okay on the show, but Greg and his chemistry with Rob is definitely the star combo.

As for the morning hour, I don't watch it as much as the early morning and 11am, but I've caught Terrell stopping himself from cursing on the OTA newscasts. It's all about finding a balance. 😂

Larry and Phil especially don't like doing the 7pm newscast by the looks of it. Phil has to stay later than he wants. Plus, they abuse Phil when Tracy is off and he has to do Sunday nights and Monday mornings.

  17. Terrell Brown just cursed on the digital newscast. He said "worked their asses off".  They are trying to be like WGN Morning News and it's a better alternative to GMA. Terrell and Val's chemistry if perfect. The Evening Digital newscast is almost unbearable. First of all. Cheryl Burton is on that newscast and I'm sorry. she is ditzy and annoying and should not have that much airtime. Also Phil, Larry and Cheryl Scott look like they don't want to have that digital newscast, it seems like they don't want to be there. Greg is the only Meteorologist that wants to be there. The Morning newscast is perfect, great chemistry and they all want to be there.

Alan was off all last week, likely just vacation time, while Cheryl, Rob, and Judy were on. None of them are in the building now, and all anchors are back to full distancing, so I'm guessing there's an outbreak. Judy likely cleared testing, but will still be quarantined. A similar thing happened earlier in the year, when Alan was at home for a week, then fully-distanced for another week, at the desk.

    That came into my mind.

With Cheryl Burton out and Judy anchored from home. Karen Jordan gets a well deserved exposer to anchoring election coverage next to Alan Kreshesky. Karen is so underrated and should be on weekdays instead of Cheryl Burton. I know Karen has nepestism, but she also has talent and is professional unlike Cheryl. Also Rob, who is a good anchor was off tonight and Ravi filled it for him. He's a great anchor, but doing coverage like this isn't his forte.

Just to clarify, I don't want Cheryl Burton and Rob to leave. Rob's good where he's at and move Cheryl Burton to a lighter newscast.

Former WBBM-TV morning anchor Erin Kennedy and Morning Meteorologist Megan Glaros have a joint YouTube channel talking about what happened after they were laid off in May 2020. Really interesting stuff from a couple minutes I've watch. They're going to have a bunch of guests on like Darrick and Marissa. They already had Lionel Moise on. They really spilled the beans on their experience in the industry and how it works. They also talked about how relieved to be out of that industry. You should check it out.

  21. Alan and Cheryl Burton are off tonight so, Liz Nagy and Judy Hsu did the 5pm while Karen was out in the field. Do you think Karen did not want to anchor tonight or do they have plans for Liz Nagy as she's been filling in more since the digital newscasts were started.
