  1. The Mick Mulvaney hiring is proving to be quite the issue at CBS News. Co-President Neeraj Khemlani said hiring Mulvaney would help CBS get access to the republicans if/when they take back the U.S House this Fall. People don’t seem to happy about the hiring, especially over certain actions of his while in office.

I find it interesting that Anne-Marie Green didn’t mention what administration he worked for,  introducing him as “a former Office of Management and Budget director”.

    Full Story: https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2022/03/30/cbs-mulvaney-backlash/

I don’t want this to turn political so please don’t make it that, I know the story as a whole is but I’m trying to focus on the impact it has at CBS News and it’s already lackluster image.

Placing this in the Mornings thread since that’s where the conversation reportedly happened.

  2. Honestly with the new President of CNN and his history with creating hard news, I could see them moving Morning Express to CNN, put it on from 6-10, live from Atlanta and make minimal format changes. She’d be a hit, Robin and her 3 co-anchors (Bob Van Dillen, Jennifer Westhoven, Mellisa Knowles) and the rotating sports anchor are all natural morning people and really get along.

New Day has seen better days, moving Brianna Keilar to mornings has not gone well and isn’t brining any new viewers. Might as well try something new, simple and reliable.

  3. Shep did a great job, wish we’d see him more, I really hope this make someone at MSNBC realize he should be a part of any upcoming changes.
He is anchoring his show tonight and appears to be in 1A using a very tight shot in front of the weather wall.

Tony will not bring the newscast to #1, but I'm sure the thought is that he'd cost less to be #3.

CBS is in a no-win situation. Norah isn't connecting with viewers but changing anchors every few years isn't going to win anyone over either. I think the first mistake was letting Scott Pelley out of the chair.

Edit: OK, that's far from the network's first mistake, but I do think it was a mistake 😆

Tony is a short term solution to a long term problem. Getting rid of Scott was a huge mistake, having him lead the network through the events that unfolded in the first couple years following would've been helpful. Norah having these behind the scenes "meltdowns" and all the drama is a serious problem for the network and will eventually be a PR issue, we've watched her get angry while she's live on the air, imagine how she acts when the camera is off.

Brian Williams would be great but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

My suggestion, Ann Curry, she has the experience, look, presentation and leadership. Best of all she's no drama and very straight forward, she would bring in good interviews and stick around long enough for CBS to groom a long term replacement, just 5 years would be long enough for them. She's also been out of news long enough to be viewed as an outsider who isn't caught up in politics and she's no longer immediately associated with NBC & Today, not to mention all the people who would be rooting for her comeback.

I use to watch Scott every night, the transition to Jeff was weird and people got too comfortable with Anthony Mason.

I haven't consistently watched Norah at all and never will.

Bringing Scott or Jeff back would be better than what they have now.

  5. The 11th Hour with Stephanie Rhule premiers tonight instead of Wednesday. As of now she will anchor special coverage of the SOTU & Primary coverage beginning at midnight eastern on Tuesday then back to normal on Wednesday night.

  6. What’s interesting about this “temporary” show is Craig returns tomorrow, so he’ll be on Today but not his own show. As for Ali Velshi, I believe he teaches in Philadelphia, I’ve always wondered why they make him travel to NYC for his show (or breaking coverage) when they could literally use 4 different studios at the Comcast Technology Center, if he wants to use 30 Rock fine, but if needed he could certainly use CTC.

Craig used to be viewed as the heir-apparent to Today when Hoda or Savannah leaves but now it seems they’d rather have Tom Llamas or Jacob Soboroff take that role.

  7. Today is a great day for everyone at CNN and News as a whole.

Stunned? Does Brian seriously have to keep this crap up? He needs to stop letting Jeff Zucker control him.

Best of luck to WarnerMedia in the hiring for this, a solid external investigation to really find the problems would be a great thing for the network.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out Jeff. Let's hope he remains unemployed.

  8. They should have just put Chris Jansing at 9AM.
I personally don’t think The 11th Hour is the right time slot for Stephanie. I guess we’ll see what changes they’ll be making to fit her style. Not to mention Joe & Mika anchoring from a shared home studio in Florida (started before COVID) all while Willie sits there patiently waiting his turn.

Can’t keep talking about doing News but then never do it…

  9. Report: Jeff Zucker Recently Approached Gayle King About Hosting CNN’s 9 PM Hour.

I just can’t envision it, not at all. It really looks like CNN doesn’t know what to do with the 9PM hour. It would’ve been a good deal for Gayle as she could’ve lived closer to family apparently, but I’d rather have her at CBS. Jeff Zucker looks even more desperate.

MLB Network is in that space. Wiki says so is NHL Network, unless I'm mistaken and they had two NJ locations.

Correct, MLB Network & NHL Network share the building. You’ll occasionally see them share each other’s studios during special broadcasts like the draft or all star games.

So where will WNJU go? If they are going on the 3rd floor they only have 2 options. Studio 3B (formerly NN) or the old Studio 3E space but it appears to be storage.

  11. This caught my attention and would be very interesting if true. Like her or not she is a rising voice on TV, and has played an important part in increasing MSNBC’s non-white viewers, which as we know advertisers pay more and more attention to.

If this happens I’d bet it will be part of a major reshuffle of primetime and could happen around the time Rachel ends her nightly show.

    Another MSNBC exit...

Sad to see Kendis leave, he was VERY underutilized for the last year and a half or so. I could see him joining CBSN with its updated slate or CNN+ for a streaming news show, he'll do great no matter where he goes. Another top tier departure.....

Cesar Conde and Rashida Jones are trying to make MSNBC a more "hard news" cable channel. We'll see how it resonates with the viewers.

Which would be a good thing, if done correctly. MSNBC can do informed perspectives/opinion AND hard news if they put the right people in those roles but the recent departures suggests they will mess it up, losing most their audience, again. Maybe Phill Griffin didn't want to stick around for what the 3rd?, 4th? rebuild in dozen years.

You think Charles David Todd MTP Daily going to get the axe? Garrett Hake is a good reporter. Kate Snow that a good choice. There a lot of good people on the bench waiting to get a chance.

I think they’ll for sure take Chuck off MSNBC, the viewers don’t like MTP Daily. Meet The Press is in 3rd place (total & prime viewers), so maybe NBC wants to make a change before the midterms. Who knows.

NBC News Universal News Group has not been utilizing talent like they should recently, they have a lot of good, young talent on the bench just sitting there. Odds are they’ll lose some of them to competition who will give them a regular spot.

  14. So what’s going on with MSNBC programing tonight? No Ayman, are they limiting broadcasts from 30 Rock again with COVID outbreaks in the building?

SNL had huge changes announced today, it wouldn’t surprise me if The Tonight Show went back to no audience and if Today limited the Plazza to less people while still requiring proof of vaccination.

  15. Stephanie Rhule anchoring The 11th Hour tonight.

I finally decided who my first choice would be to take over The 11th Hour if I was running MSNBC, Kate Snow, she has a similar style, let’s guests tell the story, mellow presence and would do a damn good job. They could have her do Monday-Thursday so she could keep doing Nightly on Sundays. Just my opinion.

Tuned in late - Where is MTP Daily?

I’ve noticed that too, Garrett Hake does a great job hosting the hour, hopefully MTP Daily’s time is coming to an end.

I wish Shep Smith move his show to MSNBC and take over BW's time slot.

It’s time to bring Shep over from

CNBC and take on the 11th Hour

I’m guessing MSNBC would put him where Lawrence or Rachel are, one thing to consider is time slot, 11PM ET/10 PM CT is local news for the networks, putting Shep on before that would help with viewership IMO. Either way he’d be great for MSNBC and give their news coverage some serious credibility.

I’m happy to see Chris Jansing anchoring tonight, makes sense why they kept her in NYC and didn’t send her to Kentucky for coverage.

  17. “I’ll show myself out, until we meet again, that is our broadcast for this Thursday. Thank you for being here with us, and for all my colleagues at the Networks of NBC News, Goodnight.” -BW.

I am sad, I will miss seeing Brian every night. Growing up I never missed Nightly, Brian was my hero and why I got into news. I’m excited to see what his next adventure is, Brian certainly proved that any kid can make it to that anchor desk.

  19. This could be interesting, Don Lemon may have played a role in altering Jussie Smollett he was going to be arrested. I know this is coming from the NYP and other more right wing outlets but this is serious grounds for termination if true. CNN needs to investigate and if these claims are found to be true ACNN needs to fire him. Who knows, maybe we’ll be getting 3 new hours of programing on CNN.

As Hawk Harrelson would say...'he gone!'

I’m actually shocked, I would’ve bet they’d find a way to keep him. Let’s hope the firing trend continues and cleans up a few more messes.

It will be interesting to see what the full investigation finds and who it names…
