I personally can’t stomach much of WNT under Muir’s hand but because he’s been a smashing success (even before COVID-19) I don’t see them changing anything up. We’re still waiting on them to move to a new set that they’ve managed to use for several other programs.

Without a doubt, Lester Holt and NBC are producing the best news product anywhere at 6:30 pm. They blow ABC and CBS out of the water.

ABC won't change anything with WNT as long as it's the #1 in the evening news lineup. Muir is a great anchor who does a great job, but I'm not a big fan of the sometimes overly dramatic presentation.

Ever since CBS demoted Jeff Glor, I too think Lester and NBC have the best newscast. I also like that NBC now puts the full newscast on Youtube and the Kids Edition of Nightly News is pretty interesting.

The headline preview at the beginning of the show is way too long...and so overly dramatic..

And they keep teasing the same upcoming stories too many times, before going to commercial.   It's becoming like Inside Edition.

Yeah, I feel like the headlines preview could be cut down to a minute or two. At least it's better than CBS'S "But first, the headlines in 60 seconds" that was used for a few months in Jeff Glor's run.

Agreed. And the “breaking news as we come on the air tonight” has got to stop.

I'm really getting tired of the "breaking news as we come on the air" or the "several developing stories" phrases. It sounds somewhat predictable and robotic and got old a couple years ago. I don't remember ABC doing this years ago. As much as I like Muir, I wish he could tone down the dramatic tone when reading the opening headlines. It won't happen though.

Can David whispering “goodnight” and the cold fade to black stop as well, while we are putting in our TVNT requests?

I'm not a fan of the cold fade. I wish they'd show the outside camera of Times Square and an ending version of the music package. I'm glad NBC and CBS still do this.

So regardless of my opinion, the ratings aren't exactly soaring. That's quite enough for me to see that she doesn't make a compelling anchor or ME. That, informing my opinion, doesn't make me look too kindly on the move to DC. Also, since the formatting is pretty much identical across networks, I would have blown that up instead of weakly leaning into it. Honestly, the network national program concept is sinking pretty quickly and a reinvention to inspire whatever viewers are remaining would be good.

Norah's an OK anchor but nothing special. I feel that Jeff Glor was pushed out when he was getting popular and I feel CBS has tried everything since Dan retired and still can't get out of 3rd place. Unfortunately, one network has to be in 3rd and ABC and NBC have been more popular with viewers for the past 15 years.  In the year since Norah became anchor, the ratings have not changed. Glor was a great anchor who should have been given more time. Does Norah really add anything compared to Glor or Pelley, or even Couric? The only thing I notice is that they're copying the WNT route of an overly dramatic opening and Breaking News every single night, not even that's brought more viewers. If the ratings are still that bad a year from now, they'll replace Norah and wonder what they did wrong.

The problem is that this is the largest story of our lifetimes. Its effects are being felt universally. There are other stories, yes. But no one event has had this much global reach. Not even world wars, in many ways.

I don't have a problem with the pandemic coverage as its big everywhere. I was talking about the constant Trump coverage beforehand and Malaysian Airlines flight 370, which they talked for days on end 6 years ago.

No matter your politics, imagine seeing one subject dominate a 24/7 News Network day in and day out. Are there not hundreds of countries in the world from which we can gather interesting stories to air on a Non-Stop News Network ( this goes for Fox and MSNBC as well). Its sad how far modern tv news has spiraled.

I always say the same thing myself. We have over 200 countries in this world and CNN just feels the need to focus on the same story or person for a long time. All the other big stories are on CNN International, which unfortunately, isn't easily available in the U.S.

I could see such scenario but the thing is though Shepard is 56 and Lester is 61 so both of them are only 5 years apart

I won't go much further into speculation beyond what I will say though but if say Lester continued to do NN until 70 (so for another 8 and a half to 9 years) Smith would be 64 to 65 by the time he would step into the NN chair (assuming Smith is the successor to Holt).

I have to wonder what other options NBC has for Lester's replacement beyond Shep?

I wonder if someone like Nicole Wallace or Hallie Jackson would be good for the job, or even Stephanie Ruhle. There's quite a bit of younger faces working for NBC News.

I’m not convinced that this talk of airing conservative programs in prime time is set in stone. Both Shell and Conde are relatively new and my sense is they are just tossing around ideas.

While news/opinion shows are cheaper to make, the reality fair that has aired on CNBC has worked. That said, it only makes sense to continue down that road and expand upon it with in-house productions. I would be very upset if they messed with The Profit. DON’T MESS WITH IT!!!

Plus, I'm sure people would be upset if Shark Tank reruns stopped airing. Just have Shepard's news program and go onto reality shows after that.

I liked SSK, but I think one of the biggest problems the show had was its identity crisis, undergoing 3 name changes in less than a year after it debuted. I know the show had a small but loyal audience. I like the harder approach but I'm sure some are going to miss the "fun" element that SSK had.

  9. I have to wonder how many years Andrea Mitchell has left. She's been at MSNBC forever, just like Chris Matthews was before he retired. I'd hate to lose Lawrence as I like him as a lot. I've not heard anything about him hinting at retirement though.

CNN is still on television, color me shocked! First time tuning to their channel in the past little while, and it's so refreshing to see such objective, non-biased reporting in their chyrons. (rolls eyes)

Doesn't matter what your politics are, if you care anything about this business, you should realize how bad this looks towards the profession. Report without bias first, ask questions later, and share opinions late at night.

I'm no fan of Trump, but this is extremely unprofessional. I've never seen any other news outlet do something about this during any of his conferences. They didn't even remotely hide their bias. CNN needs new leadership.

  11. I'm surprised MSNBC still hasn't changed its name yet. Since Microsoft no longer has any ownership ties and since the channel's constantly using the NBC News branding during programming and promotions, why not change the name from MSNBC to the NBC News Network, and change MSNBC Live to NBC News Live?

IMHO here's what I have noticed about Norah from the very beginning:  She doesn't smile enough.  The old adage goes, "It's not what you say, but how you say it."  I'm not saying she needs to smile while delivering sad stories and the like, (this is gonna hurt and will sound cruel, not trying to be sexist, but I need to be honest) ....but she needs to lose the RBF.  If you don't know what RBF is.... google it.  She's a very good looking woman, but I don't think her expressions while delivering serious stories are very inviting.  It's almost like she has a scowl on her face.

There are plenty of female anchors out there who can deliver a heavy story without looking into the camera like you spilled purple grape juice on their new white couch.

Norah is not one of them.

I have noticed the facial expressions for quite a while, and it doesn't seem to me to be the most comfortable way to watch the newscast. The only times I've seen her smile is the human interest story at the end, during sign-off and in a few promos.

  13. Norah actually has worked longer in national news, starting in the late 90's with MSNBC/NBC News, and is about a year and a half older than Jeff. I know when they announced Jeff as the then new anchor 2 years ago, people were like "Jeff Who?". I know CBS put a lot of promotion into his launch. IIRC, Jeff previously was a CBS Evening News Saturday anchor and a news anchor on the former Early Show.

Regarding Muir, he was already a top-notch journalist before he was the main WNT anchor, going into big news locations like war zones, plus he won quite a bit of prestigious awards too for his work..  He then became co-host of 20/20, before finally becoming anchor.

  14. I  can't stand Trump either but definitely notice some bias when watching the newscast. I'm sure Norah's a nice lady but what does she bring different to the table compared to Jeff Glor or Scott Pelley? The ratings have not increased, and before you know it, CBS will be back at square one finding a new anchor. I think Glor was starting to make the newscast his own when they got rid of him, now he's demoted to two hours doing a Saturday Morning newscast.

  15. I've been the watching CBS Evening News with Norah as anchor for the past few months, and it seems that they've went for the ABC route with the overly dramatic speaking style and always using "breaking news" or variants of the term every single night, no matter how truly breaking the news is. Norah does a decent job, but I still prefer Jeff Glor or Scott Pelley.

  16. Who's been filling in for Hallie Jackson since her maternity Leave? Before Craig Melvin's hour, they talked about how her baby was born yesterday. I didn't know who was filling in for her.

  17. For many years, I've been a fan of CNN. The past few years, not so much. Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, Erin Burnett, Chris Cuomo, and Wolf Blitzer are all good anchors, but I think that Jeff Zucker has ruined he channel. The politics as sport strategy has not been working for them, and I think that's why MSNBC is beating them fairly good in the ratings. I think that by putting in a new executive and abandoning the talking head panels, they could probably be competitive again with FOX and MSNBC. When Soledad O'Brien criticizes you frequently, you can tell something's very wrong with how your channel is run. MSNBC is a much better network for news than CNN. CNN shouldn't be this unwatchable.
