It would be really nice to see Rangers baseball back on KDFI and KDFW (Should KDFW preempt daytime programming).

I just don't see any Big-Four pre-empting any programming if they have a viable alternative they can consistently send a viewer to for a product with varying times like MLB. If I'm watching KMSP with an antenna, it's easy- Fox9 is 9.1, WFTC (MyNet/Fox9+) is 9.2. Different acrobatics if you (still) have cable/satellite. Apply that to DFW or the market of your choosing.

I think sports needs to go back to Free TV. It would lift the value of all these worthless independent stations by returning some good programming back to them.

With MLB taking broadcasting in-house with the bankruptcy (as they have claimed they are prepared to do), I see deals with Fox O&O's, for example, to put MLB on the MyNets (WFTC in Minneapolis, KUTP Phoenix, KDFI Dallas, etc.)

I get that it's speculation (and apologies in advance) But it's a deal I can actually see being made, to @DirtyHarry's point.

To be honest, I don't think Jim Gardner would have cared if they changed to "ABC Philadelphia News" and unveiled a redo of MCTYW by Made Music a week before he retired.

Allow me to clarify- I did not mean to suggest Gardner would have cared or not- but habitual viewers (I think the term rusty was thrown around earlier this week) would whine and complain if there was too much change at once (again, to clarify, are the possible complaints valid? I don't think so). They probably also call complaining that Ken Jennings is not Alex Trebek.

They have been sneaking in new cuts of music for a while now. I can almost guarantee "modernizing" MCTYW would not get the same response as it did nearly 30 years ago. It would probably take days for anyone but the oldest, rustiest dial viewers to notice.

Let the whole Jim Gardner retiring thing settle before they start making other changes to the newscast, but to your point yes- it's likely they will make some modifications to the newscast at some point.

This is why I eventually see WJBK becoming Fox Detroit, and WTTG, WNYW, and WAGA becoming Fox DX, Fox New York, and Fox Atlanta.

That was already tried in the MySpace era.

My guess have been that sports graphics are getting bigger, after years of being made smaller, because networks want them (at least the scores) to be more easily seen from across a bar. But watching in my own den, these graphics often look comically large.

Also... No need for that pesky ticker anymore. Any other game you care about can be tracked on your favorite sports network's app. It gives developers more space on screen to work with.

  6. First thought- Okay, for the market, these are great morning/midday graphics that play off of what ABC is doing with GMA... Until I looked it up that this is a CBS station. Definitely not saying that all affiliates should use their network's O&O package, but c'mon- don't go for something that looks like your competition's network newscast...

The weather section is provided by the team at WDAY-TV.

It's that way for all of their newspaper holdings. Back when WDAZ-TV (Grand Forks) was it's own entity (Pre-2016ish) WDAY still provided the weather for all of the newscasts (pre-taped)

That said, they have seven mets in Fargo- Need something to keep them all busy.

The FCC have approved the sale

Forum should see the writing on the wall that they're not going to get KVRR/KQDS from Red River approved... That deal was announced WAY before this one

TJ and Amy will have their lawyers ready to sue ABC if they are fired.

Maybe not fired, but certainly reassigned. It's hard for them to deliver objective news of the day when they, themselves, are the topic and attention of the news.

  9. Nothing like kicking off the second hour of GMA with this! Started at the top of the hour, Went for 5 minutes and now just a black screen as I’m posting this. Network issue, or KSTP issue?

If the issue is on KSTP’s end, kind of surprised they didn’t flip to a simulcast if their local show on KSTC while troubleshooting.

  10. Not usually around a TV during the morning news- but some time off this week gives me the opportunity. Landed on CBS Mornings.

Wasn't the whole point of this show to "put the news back in morning news" and differentiate themselves from Today and GMA? The time I spent watching was just a store-brand version of the other two shows- Same gossipy host-chat, "CBS Morning Deals" giving some paid-placement to product no one really needs, using songs like "Bye Bye Bye" as the closing bumper music, and that was just the 15-20 minutes that I caught.

I feel when the show was still CTM before moving to Times Square, they had a solid, and reasonably unique product, despite still being in third place- what happened?

  11. Soapbox rant- but as much of the country has been dealing with record cold, and other localized issues, one thing that I've noticed is the new trend of TV stations "issuing" (insert weather branding here) "Alert Days".

Some people are in serious danger- and the National Weather Service is doing (I think) a good job trying to keep the national Christmas Tree of watches/warnings/advisories clear and concise. Tv stations are diluting that for a cheap attempt at ratings points by starting a newscast with "We have issued a weather alert day for tomorrow". How long until viewers start tuning out the over sensationalizing of severe/extreme weather as just station hype putting communities into real danger?

Directors/Managers- What's the logic and reasoning behind issuing "alert days" beyond the watches/warnings from NWS? Genuinely curious.

Full disclosure- I've noticed this on my local CBS and Gray-owned stations.

This branding actually makes no sense. The “next” weather branding is about what’s coming next and preparing viewers. Traffic reports are quite literally about what’s happening now, AND what has already happened to cause the current traffic backups.

Hot take- In the era of Google Maps and Waze, having traffic reports in newscasts at all makes no sense. As for the what already happened part, that's just news.

  13. There's got to (hopefully) be an explanation- but I just watched WCCO's 6pm newscast- Weather was the pre-recorded online/streaming quickcast with only the audio of the meteorologist who recorded it- showed temps and outlook- no radar/satellite/etc. When they panned the set- weather center was empty and you could see the log-in screen on the computers.

I get it's a holiday weekend, but as a certain blogger says- the weather is the most important part of the newscast (and I agree!). The #1 station, with 5 meteorologists, in Market 15, and they couldn't have someone there to forecast the weather?
