I wonder if Jeopardy having two rotating hosts instead of one is a factor in the decision.

The only people who care about the host issue are the Karens on Facebook who don't realize Trebek can't be brought back from the dead. Jeopardy generally gets higher ratings than Wheel- Using it as a stronger lead-in for NBC Primetime.

I’d love for ABC to find a way to make GMA 3 consecutive hours. The show has been performing pretty strongly lately coming in at #1 and beating the 4th hour of Today and other competition.

Didn't that get rumored once and caused one of the infamous Kelly Ripa freak outs?

The article to me reads like they're only building a "state-of-the-art weather center" in the space and not trying to replace the current news set. Weather is something that wasn't given much attention on the current O&O sets, so that makes sense.

Weather Center, but there would still be space for a small set. And with Brad Edwards reassigned to CBSN Chicago, they could put a small enough set in to give the OTT a different look from the traditional news set?

Apparently, based on reactions to my post and this post, I was incorrect-- FOX has not entirely dispensed with the tickers; there is one on Your World with Neil Cavuto.

Cavuto has always been solid and tries to stick to what's worked for him for 25 years despite all the other changes at the network. It's clear that he likes his 2 hours at Fox Business better than FNC, but even the leftists here (and for the record, I dislike FNC, CNN, and MSNBC all equally) can respect that Neil has pushed back against former president Trump (We don't work for you) (Cutting away from a Trump speech to correct something said about Obama's record). I also appreciate lives with MS, survived cancer, and comes back from vacation to read emails from people hoping he died on air.

Don't know if these rolled out at the same as the rest of the update, but I've noticed that some stations are using a different L3 for anchors/reporters with white on whatever accent color is being used for the rest of the graphics.

KARE has switched to that. Also not sure when, but the TV panel wall behind the anchors is one big screen now as well

The Weather graphics and on air bug are the same, but wouldn’t be surprised if they change soon.

I wouldn't hold my breath on Weather graphics... KSFY and KFYR use the same overall package KCRG switched to, but all three aforementioned stations are using the same wx graphics as of right now.

Today, Lester and David were anchoring their respective evening news shows from Brooklyn while Norah stayed in Washington.

Doing your show from the nation's capital has some advantages... You main anchor stationed there when news breaks in America's largest city isn't one of them.

Even pre-covid "Today" was using the plaza much less than the past.

Could another reason Today and GMA are phasing out outside pieces is due to pre-recording interviews and segments?

Outdoor stuff could build back up more much like today is slowly doing so with the Covid changing more and more

And with CBS right across the street  doing more outside/Times Square stuff is important to re-establish dominance on the block

Not that CBS has made effective use of their real estate outside of the first week of Gayle's relaunch...

We can go on to eternity as to what anchor might bring CBS to the promised land. Besides changing who anchors the show, what other changes can be made to CBSEN to make it a better program. Formatting, graphics, theme music, story choice, presentation, reporter and correspondant roster?

Lead In. We know that in major markets that CBS is not first with even local newscasts (we have data for Chicago, Minnesota, et al on another thread) We can assume that CBS is not winning in other major markets (NYC, LA, DFW, the list goes on) and that does not help.

Even in markets where CBS does well with news (WCCO, for example says they have #1 from 5-7 Central) the viewer is a creature of habit- what stops them from switching to GMA or Today at 7am?CBS not only needs to provide quality programming but also burdened with providing such good programming that the viewer breaks their normal habits. Same sentiment translates to CBSEN.

Tony is a short term solution to a long tern problem. Getting rid of Scott was a huge mistake, having him lead the network through the events that unfolded in the first couple years following would've been helpful. Norah having these behind the scenes "meltdowns" and all the drama is a serious problem for the network and will eventually be a PR issue, we've watched her get angry while she's live on the air, imagine how she acts when the camera is off.

Brian Williams would be great but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

My suggestion, Ann Curry, she has the experience, look, presentation and leadership. Best of all she's no drama and very straight forward, she would bring in good interviews and stick around long enough for CBS to groom a long term replacement, just 5 years would be long enough for them. She's also been out of news long enough to be viewed as an outsider who isn't caught up in politics and she's no longer immediately associated with NBC & Today, not to mention all the people who would be rooting for her comeback.

I use to watch Scott every night, the transition to Jeff was weird and people got too comfortable with Anthony Mason.

I haven't consistently watched Norah at all and never will.

Bringing Scott or Jeff back would be better than what they have now.

I could get on the Ann Curry train... She fits the CBS "straight news" mantra, and I was hoping she would have replaced Norah on the Gayle King Show.

No chance she would likely overtake Lester Holt for the #2 spot, but nevertheless it would be a good chance to redeem herself for getting screwed over by Lauer on "Today". Even if she was the stop gap while a long-term host was groomed, it would transition nicely into a role at 60 Minutes.

Tony will not bring the newscast to #1, but I'm sure the thought is that he'd cost less to be #3.

CBS is in a no-win situation. Norah isn't connecting with viewers but changing anchors every few years isn't going to win anyone over either. I think the first mistake was letting Scott Pelley out of the chair.

Speaking of changing anchors every few years, another problem with moving Tony to Evening News is yet another casting change to the Gayle King Show...

What are the chances they give a former anchor another shot? Pelley? Glor?

And to no surprise, two major cable industry groups filed their objections to this deal.

The ATVA filed an informal objection, while the NCTA filed a petition to deny

Coworker and I were talking about this yesterday (sorry I didn't think to post about this then). So- either FCC denies the KVRR sale and breaks up KVLY's duopoly (or would they be grandfathered in?) Or they allow the sale and the ownership rules are all out the door? That's how I feel this reads between the lines...

Nexstar has renewed the rest of their CBS affiliations.

    https://tvnewscheck.com/top-news/business/article/viacomcbs-and-nexstar-renew-affiliations/

Question/Observation... For the renewals, KXMC (Minot, ND) is listed. However, KXMB (Bismarck, Hub of Nexstar's North Dakota operations), KXMA (Dickinson, ND) and KXMD (Williston, ND) are all not listed with the renewals.

That said, Down in South Dakota, KELO/KDLO/KCLO are all listed individually.

So... Are there still holdouts with Nexstar CBS Renewals? Or am I overthinking all this?

I like how neither of the “new” logos have the current ABC logo. I know that KSTP switched already. But dang, the Gray graphics thread is turning into a logo discussion thread. We should have a logo discussion thread.

Fact Check time! KSTP's does use the new ABC logo- A quick scroll through the homepage of their website shows that... I counted 8 new ABC logos, 3 old logos. Since I watch their newscasts, click on any recent video and you will see the new logo used on all on-air graphics (except mic flags). And if we're bring honest, as small of a scale the ABC logo is the average/casual viewer probably doesn't notice or care about the change.

Also- I'll go on the argument (again...) that it's not necessarily retro. The logo goes back to the red box/parallelogram a few times from the original inception. The most recent case in 2021, Fox9 switched to the new O&O look making every station's primary color a shade of blue (4, 5, 9, and 11). KSTP simply differentiated themselves by changing their color scheme to red/white/black.

Damn! Brian would have been good. If not Brian then who else, Shepard Smith?

I hear Matt Lauer is available 😆 CBS does like to find work for Today Show alums (Bryant, Couric, Morales)

Very annoying to watch when you want a quick look at the temperature.

But with everyone having wx apps on their phone which are more accurate for the temp thanks to location tracking etc, is time/temp really necessary on the screen? Or in the days of cleaner, simpler looks is it just clutter that can be jettisoned?
