WAGT/WJBF new building almost ready

Media General's duopoly of WJBF 6 and WAGT 26 in Augusta, GA are nearly ready to move into their new building. It's located off of Bobby Jones expressway a few blocks across the street from the mall. Not a fan of both buildings moving out of the heart of downtown, However this new building will supposedly allow both stations to launch their newscasts in HD.

The only thing I roll my eyes at is that the thought that whenever there are reaction stories needed for a particular story, they will all be filmed at the mall.

Here are WJBF and WAGT's current facilities, followed by their brand new building (next post). Also really not a fan of the signage on the building, but I suppose anything is better than WJBF's current 1950's era sign.

That WJBF building should be preserved, signage and all (though it looks like the neon has suffered a good bit of wear).

It should but it won't. Likely if the land is sold, it will be bulldozed. Regardless of the history of the station or how much of a landmark it is downtown, people have mixed feelings about that old 1950s yellow building.

According to my friend who is a meteorologist at WAGT, he says that construction on "The New Television Park" has been delayed for months and months and nobody knows when it will be complete at this point. A recent Facebook post from Media General and the designer Professional Communications Systems says the studios are coming along and will be done very soon.

I have heard horror stories that WJBF's set and WAGT's set will be sharing the same studio space, which means with one set next to the other the two newscasts will be trying to put on newscasts simultaneously up against each other LITERALLY. However, I do know WJBF's standardized Media General set is going up now and WAGT's even nicer non-standardized set is already complete. According to my meteorologist friend, Schurz said they would not allow Media General to give them standardized anything.

I posted these pictures of the WJBF set being built in the HD News Thread recently, it will be a no-frills Media General set for sure.

Update as of September 26th, both stations were set to premiere in the new studios this morning... but this has been delayed YET AGAIN.

According to a comment from WAGT after someone posted a question about the new building:

t was supposed to be Monday, but we are holding off until we know every cable is connected and everything is perfect. Having seen the new look, the new set - trust us, this is not your average ordinary tweak. NBC 26 News will look dramatically different. Hopefully mid-October. But you know we'll keep all of you updated!

It's funny how they thought a year ago this was going to be ready by this past February...

Meanwhile, WJBF ended their LMA with WFXG last night. The new WTOC Savannah-produced FOX 54 News at Ten will air tonight. The team that used to do the newscasts on WFXG are moving to WAGT-DT2 "CW Augusta" for a revamp that also airs tonight. The newscast will be branded as NewsChannel 6 at 10 on The CW. With the building being delayed and all, I'm beginning to wonder how they will be able to put on this newscast tonight... will they use WJBF's current graphics? Will the station even have a news open prepared? I'm beginning to doubt it, I have the newscast will launch cold due to being so unprepared, because rightfully they cannot reuse WFXG's old duratrans and on-air graphics.

By the way, here is some non-descriptive pics of WAGT's new set. They purposely did it this way and have been slowly previewing it ever since. It indirectly has a FX Group feel to it...

Also I thought this was rather odd, but kind of cool. Both stations will have neon signs hanging up in the lobby with their current logos, since WAGT has been known to get a new logo at least every year, my guess is that this was a waste of money.

I see what you mean it looks like a different font then the rest. The 'w' looks like Helvetica and the rest look like Futura. Very tacky.

You wouldn't be wrong to think that, this is their official logo and the W looks awkward here too.

Anyways the new studio is almost complete, we were informed on WJBF's morning and noon newscasts that those would be the last broadcasts from the downtown studios and that Monday morning would be the official launch.

Last week while training on the new set, Jennie Montgomery, the weeknight anchor at WJBF posted these pictures of the new set on Facebook, it's no frills MG. I am a little disappointed it wasn't executed better...

Now of course it remains to be seen what the full WAGT set looks like, we probably won't know until Monday. This week WJBF started putting out pretty nice 16:9 promotions that of course were cut off in 4:3 but I'm sure this problem will be rectified when they move over to Augusta West next week. WAGT will probably leave us guessing up until the final moments they launch, which is typical.

I don't have a TV Tuner so I can't record on Monday. If anyone can pick up a signal in Augusta, this would be worth recording and putting on YouTube.
