newsjunkieUSA 0
WOIO - same station for that infamous "Body of Art" story - has done it again. As they, and the rest of the Cleveland TV News market, are barred from bringing cameras in to cover the Jimmy Dimora corruption trial, 19 decided to re-enact the trial's hot moments using actual transcripts and...wait for it... kjohnson 17
The news director assures it's for lightening the situation. My next question is when did we as journalists get to decide whether an issue needs levity? Leave it to the late night comedians. Just the report the facts and move on. And we wonder why the industry has such difficulty being taken seriously by the public. This is why. Guest NewsHound
Well I think it's genius, sure it's a ridiculous idea using puppets to re-enact the trial and testimony, but it's catchy, it's clever, it would have people talking about it and tuning in to watch it, and its an idea that no one else in the history of local television has EVER considered. It's a ratings ploy, and it just might work. Sure you can have Reporter B stand outside the courthouse and go "Well our cameras were not allowed inside today, but I can tell you this..." or you can use puppets to tell the story and entertain the viewers a little, as the news director said some of the testimony was reminiscent of a "circus". I applaud WOIO for thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries, its very unique. qunewsguy 377
The anchor's own reaction after the piece says it all. Lame, degrading, and not what an organization trying to be taken seriously should be attempting. ED2 144
On another Youtube clip, they said the puppets court airs at the end of the newscasts. I guess that's OK, at least they didn't make it the A block or something. RGSJenkins 435
In 2008, Raleigh station WNCN (NBC) did their version of the NCAA Tournament highlights by using toys. Jess 1115
19 Action News - you know, I am incredibly thankful that this station exists. Because I didn't know it was possible to go over the top of over the top. In related news, Ramona Robinson is joining the station (or rejoining if you count WUAB's news as the forerunner of 19 Action News). She did a relatively sophisticated newscast at KYC - wonder how she'll fit at the station with the puppet court reenactments. WAVY 10 Fan 233
If I was running CBS I probably would have started searching to see if there was anywhere else that was unaffiliated/had a contract expiring so I'd move the affiliation from WOIO. bhratbrat 437
And where exactly would CBS move to in Cleveland. Considering that there newscasts are strong at eleven and other dayparts in really a highly competitive market. Cleveland is one of these markets where, even though you have better stations local quality wise (WKYC, WEWS, WJW), ratings numbers don't like at one of the most prime spots for a local affiliate which is at 11. Plus 19 has developed a brand no matter what you want to think. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/11696-the-puppets-court/#findComment-71321 Share on other sites
