Election Night 2012!!!!!

Next Tuesday (11/6) will be Election Night in America, and for the TV news industry, this is their Super Bowl. It is also the one night every four years when the networks go all out (and I do mean it) in terms of graphics, music, and sets that have been in the works for months.

They don't have their plans set yet, but I know NBC with Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw will have the #1 network coverage. At CBS, it'll be Scott Pelley's night to shine in his first election night (joined by fellow Texan Bob Schieffer; dunno how many elections he's covered), while Diane Sawyer and George S. will be doing their thing at ABC. I'll be switching between NBC and CBS, especially the latter hoping for any "Pelley-isms" Scott may spurt out on the fly.

When 11:00pm Eastern rolled around last time, Obama was declared the winner as polls throughout the Lower 49 have closed. But with the race becoming at its closest ever, who knows that despite Romney's best efforts, it could be after the 10:00 hour that the presidency may be called again for Obama...unless we see a reprise of 2004 when it wasn't till the crack of dawn before George W. Bush won again. But hey...just like in 2000 and "Florida, Florida, Florida", we're always used to the wee hours! We'll see how late they'll go this time around.

Just edited it.

As for cable...just like in 2008 when the whole world watched (as evidenced by numerous YouTube videos of reactions to Obama elected), CNN will be the go-to place; I'll be checking in on them as well (leaving MSNBC and Fox News alone).

By the way...I remember in 1996 when Clinton got re-elected over Bob Dole; the networks called it at 9:00 Eastern though the West Coast still had time to vote! I'm sure it was earlier than that in 1984 with Reagan in a total landslide.

But after Superstorm Sandy leaves the East Coast, the networks will immediately begin planning for Election Night. That includes rehearsals all weekend to make sure everything functions correctly when they hit the air next Tuesday, especially real-time graphics. Some like NBC and CBS will be done in-house, others will be by wTVision or Vizrt, but I'll save those for the Graphics forum.

NBC will have their Democracy Plaza and ABC is taking over Times Sqaure. Still wondering what CBS is doing.

Nothing fancy as always, except gussying up their main studio for election night (which they're still doing while Scott Pelley has been doing the news from Superstorm Sandy's hardest-hit areas).

I kinda wish they'd figure out a way to use the This Morning studio in some capacity, it's not off-location like the Early Show was and the monitor wall and round table could be put to good use.
