Viper550 292 Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 http://news.kron4.com/ Well, they've switched to WordPress, and this one at least looks like a real website for once...
mre29 1563 Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Yeah, that's a big improvement. Their last site was an embarrassment that was more appropriate for a station in a small market (DMA #200 and down) than San Francisco. What I don't get, though, is why KRON doesn't have a WorldNow site like the rest of Young's stations do.
caliwxdude 254 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 What I don't get, though, is why KRON doesn't have a WorldNow site like the rest of Young's stations do. Well, if KRON is still on the market, Young probably doesn't want to spend another dime on the place than they absolutely have to. WordPress is free. The fact that they're still on the air is shocking to me.

They might not recoup much money, but at least the rest of their station group will look more attractive to potential buyers.

It almost makes Enron and Worldcom look like innocent accounting errors. Plus, who would want to buy it? Outside of Fox...
News 9 Viewer 100 Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Hell, they may never recover one red cent of the $700M they blew on KRON. It almost makes Enron and Worldcom look like innocent accounting errors. Plus, who would want to buy it? Outside of Fox... Young's mistake wasn't overpaying for KRON. It was allowing KRON's affiliation agreement with NBC to expire.
Jess 1116 Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Well, if KRON is still on the market, Young probably doesn't want to spend another dime on the place than they absolutely have to. WordPress is free. The fact that they're still on the air is shocking to me. Even though it's free, it's still better than almost all of the proprietary CMS systems many groups still use. You'd be surprised at how far WordPress, a decent premium theme, and some of their open-source plugins will get you. I'm surprised more groups aren't on WP. Digging through the code, though, it looks like they at least bothered to make a custom theme for this. (Although I'm looking through and seeing obvious code errors - JavaScript in the header is bad, best web practice is to put it in the footer. Unfortunately I think that's a WordPress "thing", but I know some themes and plugins let you move things to the footer. And what the hell, KRON, why are you calling jQuery twice?) I agree with you on the second part: how in the hell do they have a news department, let alone as many newscasts as they do?
ToriElectra 292 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 I agree with you on the second part: how in the hell do they have a news department, let alone as many newscasts as they do? Well, even before the MyNet era they were still running a large amount of news kept over and/or expanded from the NBC era. They're kinda like the KCAL of SF/Oakland: running a lot of news for an independent (well, semi-independent, MyNet's essentially dead), though KRON uses more conventional timeslots. Weirdly enough, Young used to own KCAL after Disney sold it to them in the mid-90's (FCC rules wouldn't let them keep it and KABC).
