WVEC 13News Now rolling out the WFAA/WWL look

It's interesting that 13 News Now is rolling out a new package, so close in time, to the station deal closing with Gannett. If they do have to change again, it'll be one short-lived package.

Here is a link to some videos - transitions, franchises, opens. The WVEC art department channel is public at the moment.

Here is a second WVEC youtube channel (ABC13Graphics) with more video - topical examples and weather open elements.

Agree. The look is a huge step up for them from the in-house look. Too bad none of the clips feature audio. They could very well begin using the news package portion of "This is Home" with this launch. Makes sense, considering timing of this look rolllout, but who knows. IMO, that's a better option than rolling out the look, just to have to change the audio branding again in a few months.

If the Gannett purchase of Belo included a full buyout of this Belo look, it could be used as a "B package" in markets where they have "overlap" and shell corps. St. Louis and KMOV comes to mind, Phoenix etc. Otherwise, just a guess that WVEC, WWL, WFAA will keep the look for awhile, before changing to the gannett look.

But, as wacky as the broadcast world is, all of these stations, outside of St. Louis and Phoenix could always be forced to change immediately once Gannett has control. WVEC may have made a preemptive move to the graphics, thinking that Gannett wouldn't force them to change so soon.... OR they may have the indirect blessing as it will ultimately be a secondary B look. Time will tell and will be fun to watch how it unfolds.

So if WVEC is still moving forward with the new Belo package, does this mean that this might migrate over to KMOV as well as the Belo Northwest stations?

I don't Gannett will be very open to having two stations with the same look in one market. 5 and 4 will have something different.

Bleh. I still really dislike most of the Belo standardization, at least the way it's used in Houston (haven't seen an OTA broadcast for the other stations yet).

Part of the graphics are built for 4x3 viewers (the lower 3rds and branding bug), while other parts are built for 16x9 (OTS elements, some fullscreen elements and the secondary/segment branding bug). And then there's the live bug. It doesn't line up with either of the two lower 3rd elements (primary banner or secondary/segment bug) and just kinds hangs off on it's own in the far far upper left corner. On a 4x3 TV you can't see it period.

About the only thing that looks good is the transitions and segment opens.

I really like it. Definitely a departure from anything WVEC's had in the past 10-12 years or so.

I have a feeling Always Worth Your Time will stay. If you butt the first two cuts from the NMSA sample up to the Daybreak and regular intros respectively, they fit really well. Interesting move that Daybreak has a completely different open.

These will also work much better with the set... chances are the duratrans will be changed out because they have the 13News branding.

The franchise opens on the "Art Wvec" channel look like they could be generic elements from the Belo package, especially the sports open... no localization, and WVEC's never called anything "Sports Extra" (they have the Sunday Sports Special)

Also, the Twitter account is sporting a background with the new graphics.

It is just OK on KENS. It's a HUGE improvement over the crap they used to have. KENS uses a lot of in-house elements with this package, most notably the open (it does not look like the other Belo stations). Since I don't feel like uploading the current open (although I have it), here are some stills for now. I'll compare with the other Belo stations:

I mean, look at how different the designs are. There's consistency between all of the different stations, but each station is allowed to add their own touch (and note how KENS lacks the "LIVE" part of the open the rest of the stations have). Also, I couldn't find KVUE's open so I don't know how theirs look compared to the rest.

Oh, and if that WVEC Daybreak open seems familiar:

they use the lifestyle show open for the morning news, which actually works out fine for them since WVEC lacks a lifestyle show anyway.

I will agree with WXManTim though:

I don't think the Houston graphics departments are really good with executing standardized graphics. KSAT uses the P-N look far better than KPRC does, KENS uses the Belo look far better than KHOU. The Express-News does a far better job with the SF Chronicle design than the Houston Chronicle does. Houston doesn't really tend to play with what they're given while the San Antonio outlets do, which results in a far more visually appealing product if you ask me (yes, I'm a little biased :p)

But yes, I don't like how the live bug gets cut off on 4:3, or how some other graphics also get chopped off. It seems as if they couldn't decide whether they wanted to make the package friendly with 4:3 sets or not (unlike the Scripps stations, the Belo stations don't broadcast their cable signal in widescreen, so the graphics do get cut off).

I mean when you compare it to KENS' previous graphics, the difference is night and day. Same can be said with the hogwash WVEC currently calls "graphics". These are far more superior to what they've been using. I hope the rest of the group gets this and then Gannett keeps it as a secondary look (or decides to make this their primary look). But I still think they will be getting TiH once Gannett gets their hands on WVEC. That theme is far more modern and more superior than AWYT. TiH screams news and evokes a signal of trust and respect, which AWYT lacks. But I do hope they keep AWYT for their Weather Authority opens, I actually like that cut better than the TiH weather cuts. WGRZ uses the old Rampage WX cut, so why can't WVEC do the same with AWYT? The rest of AWYT can go, it's a seven year old package. Time for something fresh.

KMOV's current graphics aren't too bad. They're basically the same ones KING and KGW use. But they have been in use since roughly 2007-2008 although they have been modified since then. These wouldn't look too bad on KMOV if they are applied the right way. It would take some time to get used to it since as I said before, stations like KING and KMOV have had the same package for roughly 6 years now (man I feel old).

KTVK needs a refresh too... It's basically a minor bump to a 2007/2008-vintage look. KTVK has never looked like any of the other Belo stations.

And it probably never will. 3TV has really taken a turn for the worse as of late.
