WWL-TV and KATC-TV also dabbled in usurping graphics for their newscast intros in the 1980s, being sister stations at the time (KATC was sold to Loyola, WWL's owner, in 1971). They both even used the same music jingle package: TM Productions' "The Best Things In Life" (1979).

They weren't the only ones. Off the top of my head, WTVC and WLBT did it too.

 

WISH's 90s look particularly after ditching First News is one of my personal favorites. "The Best Gets Better" indeed!

WACH in Columbia, SC seems to be incorporating an odd mix of Sinclair's new package as well as their old one.

The Look G attempt isn't bad considering the market size and effort they put into it. It's not a straight up ripoff either like KHSL/KNVN's. Theirs is pretty bad. Interestingly it appears that the opens and talent bump are played out from master control since they're in a HD and the odd transitions from the studio feed to the talent bump etc.

 

For the morning show, oh it irks me that they're using Montserrat (a free Google font) and not Gotham. Could you guys really not afford Gotham? If they'd used Gotham then their ripoff would actually be pretty good.

 

Well, at least they have a BIM site now. Whatever they used before was crap.

WDBB ripped off the old Hayes "splitting city skyline" element (see: WAGA, KMOL)

. That could also be actual Hayes work, but I don't think so by 1984/85.

Those WDBB graphics debuted in 1984 when the station signed on, I wouldn't be surprised if they were legit and not a knockoff. But probably no way to find out now...

Hoak seemed to have a thing for knocking off Hothaus. WMBB, Valley News Live, KNOE (the closest knockoff of the final Belo look)... That WMBB look was also picked up by KHAS and KNOP too when they went HD last year. (although KHAS/KSNB now uses a stock Gray look)
