Eat News 4738
Thursday was the first day of Tribune ownership of the "UT-San Diego". The LA Times quickly rebranded UTSD to the old "San Diego Union Tribune". Right out the gate we are starting to see direct tie-ins with the "TV" station UTTV, and KSWB-FOX 5. Safe to say the KGTV-10 media partnership with the Newspaper is dead. UTTV was a bold attempt by the previous owners of the paper to create an online and cableTV station. The cable portion lasted about 1 year. Now FOX-5 and Tribune enter the picture, and it will be interesting to see what, and who survives at UTTV. Since the sale of the paper did not include the land...expect Tribune to move the newspaper operations to a new location that will not likely include a full tv studio. Best hope for a flashcam like with the LA-Times/KTLA set-up. Or??????? Could a mega newsroom with Union-Trib/KSWB be in the future? The KSWB digs are pretty small, and the paper will need a new home soon. Enjoy the show!
A3N 996
The partnership between FOX5/SDUT began at least over a month ago. Whether they decided to partner up because they knew Tribune was going to buy the newspaper... Who knows. In an article announcing the sale, it was mentioned that they would continue operating at the Mission Valley location. For how long? It's anyone's guess. I can't imagine Tribune wanting Manchester as a landlord for too long. If they were to go the shared building/newsroom route, then they should get on it quick as commercial property sales are on the rise. As for the UT's tv operation, it can easily be swallowed up by KSWB, as it's a bare bones staff.
n925tv 143
10News just reported that UT is laying off lots of employees, seems as they were stabbing UT in the back lol
CalItalian2 163
Why would one think that the San Diego Union-Tribune and KSWB would merge anything? They're owned by two different companies, Tribune Media Corporation and Tribune Publishing. KTLA nixed the idea of moving in with the Los Angeles Times a long time ago even though their studios were sold.
A3N 996
According to an article by the paper, the UTTV staff was laid off since the sale did not include the studio nor control room. Very weird to say the least. From the article, it looks like the San Diego U-T will still have some kind of video presence but it will originate from the Times. In the newspaper's case, the old owner has made his intentions known on what he plans to do with the property that the newspaper sits on. So, they have no choice but to start looking at other places to house their operations. In KSWB's case, their facility is so small that they could benefit from joining with SDUT to share a bigger facility. While technically "owned" by two different companies, doesn't mean that they can't share resources/costs where available.
Eat News 4738
178 jobs cut at the UT makes me think the entire remaining staff of the paper actually could fit into the current KSWB studios. What happens to the UTTV gear in Mission Valley? Forget that ...the Penny Saver went out of business also! End of days.
CalItalian2 163
There was hardly anyone cut in the newsroom...maybe 1 or 2. Only 9 of the 173 that were laid off were from the newsroom. Of those, the majority were from the paper's video department. The rest were advertising sales, operations (machinists, truck drivers, electricians and pressroom workers) and circulation. The paper will now be printed in Los Angeles and trucked to and delivered in San Diego by Los Angeles Times delivery employees. Much of sales will now be consolidated in Los Angeles. Circulation will mostly take place from Los Angeles.
