WXmanTim 88
So FTVLive has a post up this morning decrying the presence of banner ads embedded in the graphics of KTLA. http://www.ftvlive.com/todays-news/2015/11/2/banner-ads-come-to-tv-news Look, this is nothing new...it's just a new way of doing something. In the early 50s, there was the Camel News Caravan that had nothing to do with a camel delivering the news, and everything to do with advertising...cigarettes. http://free-classic-tv-shows.com/History/News-Caravan-John-Cameron-Swayze/1954-09-28-Camel-News-Caravan/John-Cameron-Swayze-September-28-1954.jpg Even up until the early 1970s, most stations prominently displayed sponsors on their sets. http://media.jrn.com/images/20091229-233435-pic-52156488_6222056_ver1.0_640_480.jpg http://www.dougquick.com/wcia_pic_pauldavis.jpg http://www.boweryboyshistory.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/2.jpg Do let's can the fake outrage, kthxbye. fan of la tv 47
KTLA has used banner ads in their weather segments for years. Not sure why it's news now. The ad will appear for 10 seconds or so and then disappear. TennTV1983 804
The same case at WREG and some of the other Tribune stations. Outside of a local advertisement banner that appears before the weather segments, there's also the shameless plugs for WGN America's shows that pop up from time to time. The guy who writes that stuff isn't very good at his "facts". tyrannical bastard 3955
Call them what you will, whether they are snipes or banner ads, this is old snooze. KTLA just got lazy or caved in to the advertiser so it looked like one that pollutes the internet. Earlier examples have been flashier and tied in more with station branding. "All of our anchors at KTLA have an egg mcmuffin every day"... who cares? It's better to have it NOT involving the brand... then the entire newsroom starts to look a little greasy... William1111 41
I find it ironic that FTVLive is complaining about *one* banner ad, when they have at least 20 advertisements on their own site. rkolsen 1684
And to think I get annoyed when WBAL runs a snipe for their news and weather apps during the forecast. I'm not sure if it's still going on but there was this annoying snipe that aired during WBFF's weather casts that took up a third of the screen. The advertiser was for the HVAC/Handyman type of company that is all over the DMV region. This companies logo is a truck and during WBFF's forecasts the truck drives across the screen that had a cloud behind it of exhaust. I think in the cloud they have the phone number in it. Here's the truck if anyone cares: The company sponsors frequent on screen / in program elements on almost every morning show in DC and Baltimore save for WBAL and WJZ. The company sponsors the tickers on WRC and WMAR. WMAR at last check used the logotype font but WRC got a little creative with the truck "reversed" from the above image with the ticker text coming from the back of the truck. rkolsen 1684
Here's another example of Michael and Son's snipes on WUSA: Interestingly the one during the weather is inserted by the weather graphics because when Topper walks by the graphic he is keyed over while the regular bug is on top. Must be a corporate thing. KHOU has the same thing in their morning ticker. And while their weather segment doesn't have an on-screen sponsor bug, their traffic segment does. djlynch 56
KVUE hasn't been doing sponsored forecasts, but they have been running advertising on their severe weather crawls since shortly after the Gannett/Belo deal. I'm surprised that anyone has bought into that, just from the standpoint of the associations possible. "Today's catastrophic flooding is brought to you by Nissan."
