Newsgathering drones

It seems that Cox and Media General (especially the latter) have introduced drones in some of their markets. I wonder where the next newsgathering drone will get to

Logic would say WFLA. But if I had to guess either WRIC or any of the Northeast MG stations would be next; I have a funny feeling WIVB or WTEN will be it.

The ABC O&O's and Graham Media Group stations have dabbled in drones too... It's a sweeps stunt for now...

Considering everyone in Buffalo now has cameras viewing scenery, competition is up and drones would be next.

So where are all the award winning drone worthy stories?

Youtube has all kinds of 'drone fly-aways' that will make you laugh your ass off.

There is no fun place you can fly a drone now....and 67% of the people surveyed had a negative feeling about drones.

Lets see a station get a real drone...a predator surplus drone from the military or some spook agency. The kind with the super badass cameras and electronic jammers.

"MegaDrone 7000"

Most these stations don't actually have an actual drone...just the phone # of the local real estate drone guy. Kinda like those fake newscopters the likes of KGTV .

K.C. has a couple of guys with their own drone companies. If you know you'll need it in advance, you can pay for a flight. We did it with the World Series parade. One of our photographers is buying her own drone for personal use. I'm not sure how police or firefighters will feel if we try to use it for breaking news.

If all of the legal issues get straightened out with drones, though, you can kiss money-pit choppers goodbye.

When a typical drone can follow a high speed pursuit, or cover a wild fire, then they may be worthwhile for newsgathering.

Until then...

Drones will be shooting parking lots and corn fields.

(edited from porn to corn)

Corn...

Yummy!

And it appears WHBQ becomes the next station to launch a drone, so add another Cox property to the list. Fitting for the previous post - the first live shot was at the Agricenter in Memphis, which is basically a corn field.
