Fresco News app

Finally, an app for citizen journalism. Yes, citizen journalism is a controversial thing and has been for a very long time, but many of the bad things some professional journalists have said about citizen journalism can apply to professional journalism as well (biases for example, like how Fox News and Sinclair are conservative and NBC, CBS, and Tegna are more liberal). I'm actually going to try it out and see. What do yall think?

Last I heard, this is a "cheap labor" ploy created (whether totally to in part) by Fox and their O&O's. I wouldn't consider myself some kind of hero or warrior for using it.
FTVLive said the same thing. Not sure if this is true or not, but we'll see once it really takes off, which might be pretty soon.

Liability.

Bingo.
And that's why citizen journalism is a controversial thing. Because professional journalists (though, as these posts have proven, its not just them) think it'll take away their jobs, when really, fresco is supposed to be used to expand journalism, not take it away.

"Expand journalism?" Really dude? The app/concept is nothing more than a covert way of trying to save these stations money. Of course they'll feed the BS of the average citizen having a voice or being an integral part of the news gathering process, but let's not sugar coat it. Anyone with two brain cells knows what this is. Let's see how long they continue with this crap once someone gets seriously injured or killed for trying to get a video or picture of a dangerous situation. And if no one thinks it can't happen, just look at the morons who were stopped in the middle of the road recording video of the police shootout in Baton Rouge... A shootout that left three officers dead, and several others wounded. In the video you can clearly hear one of the officers telling that person to get away from the area, yet they kept on filming. Now cops have to worry about idiots interfering in their jobs because of the average "citizen journalist " wants to make a quick $20? Ridiculous to say the least.

You can say the EXACT SAME THING about some professional journalists! And what you said right there basically summarized the idea most professional journalists (though as I said, not just them) have about the controversial idea known as "citizen journalism". And do you think the average citizen should have a voice in news, let alone have an integral part of newsgathering? Besides, professional journalists can't get everything you know.

Way to drink the Kool-Aid. Journalism needs checks and balances, but that isn't what this is. Other stations offer similar apps and email addresses, and very few pull this kind of crap to fool the consumer. All this is is "send us pics, so we don't have to employ someone to film it for us".

Nothing less. Nothing more.

There is room for CJ's ijn a limited role when it comes to a traditional news gathering operation.

KBEX is not going to use fresco to "assign" a CJ to a major breaking incident for liability reasons. If you get killed on the way to the story that KBEX assigned to you,...we get sued to holy hell.

KBEX can't even "assign" a stringer because of union rules and other contract/master agreement crap.

Next problem is KBEX has a big enough problem with our egocentric reporters and lazy assed photogs. Sure we would love to buy your shaky wrong assed aspect ratio sideways crap for $50...but as soon as my crew gets there you are done.

Yes it is nice to have 'first video" from an average Joe and we will pay more for that.

On days when we only have 2 reporter/camera crews available, we can use our people for the major stuff...and get a few frescos on stupid street fairs and boring 5k fun runs. That "soft news" is predictable, family friendly and some fool that can hold his IPorn steady will make $50.

Not saying that CJ's are all soft news oriented, but in this case (traditional Tv news) that is where CJ's are most useful to us. There are some really good CJ's out there that run their own channels.

There are crappy "pros" also....no doubt.

Well, you can't just leave it to the pros, and yes, stations have offered similar apps, but none like fresco has. And CJs shouldn't be limited in newsgathering. For one thing, you wouldn't use a youtube video without crediting the person who made the original most of the time, would you? Why don't we credit citizen journalists (by whatever name they decide to go by) for their newsgathering efforts, including hard news?

And I'm going to say it again, Fresco isn't supposed to put professional journalists out of a job. In fact, its supposed to reintroduce collaborative journalism to news (which rarely, if ever, happens)
