DirtyHarry 727 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I have enjoyed watching various newscasts from around the country with the NewsOn app, but I don't get how they make money on this. The ads are blanked out, I'm guessing because of copyright laws. I hate to say I miss the ads, but I miss the ads. I get how iHeart makes money even though most of the ads are blocked, because they run an ad before they let your radio station run, but I don't see any ads at all coming through using the NewsOn app. Of all the things to get your panties wadded-up over, copyright protection for advertising? It probably has to do with the royalties for the actors. This is why people hate "the man".
Guest Former Member 207 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I also have NewsOn on my Roku...there are some stations that let their regular commercials (even with that, some not all) stream in the online broadcast. Hell, I've seen other stations that stream their news (WFXR Roanoke and KRGV in the Rio Grande Valley in particular) where all of the programming is aired in intact, 24/7. For awhile, WFTS' stream was incidentally airing all of its programming in the clear--news, ABC, syndication. A few Saturdays ago, I was watching the KOVR stream, and caught the last ten minutes of whatever CBS kids show was airing leading into that day's 5pm news. I don't know if you're (or anyone else) is familiar with the ChannelPear app...I've used it now for a couple years, and they have several local news streams--including the aforementioned WFXR and KRGV streams. I don't want talk too much about illegal streaming, but some lucky soul there uploaded the streams of the major NYC stations, including WNET and WLIW, but only WABC and WLIW remain as of now. The Harrisburg-Lancaster-York stations (the ones carried via the USTVNOW stream service) are uploaded there, but the streams always buffer.
RGSJenkins 435 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 On some channels (KHON, WALB, WBAL, WPRI,...etc) they play unskippable 10-30 second ads during commercials on the replays. I know early on they used to play anywhere from one to 7 ads at once.

I don't think it's a copyright issue, but more of an "I don't want to give you a free ad" even if that means having a blank space. The 'blank space" is inventory that you probably wish to sell. Yes, some stations sell time on all platforms so you may see the same commercials on-air and on-line during a broadcast. Of course I may be completely wrong, and if that is the case... ...then never mind.
tyrannical bastard 4033 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I've encountered the "pre-rolls" on a pretty regular basis across all groups. Cox passes through their ads even on their Roku channels. I think it used to be a separate stream but it appears to be the main feed. I just wish that Sinclair supported time-shifting....but streaming via their app or NewsOn webpage, it is WORLDS more reliable than their websites. Come on Nexstar...use what you bought from Media General....don't screw it up!!!!

WestleyWolf 122 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 Here in Sacramento KCRA shows the Doppler radar when going to commercial or just show the logo of KCRA 3 looping until they come back.
ns8401 957 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 One thing that the app really fails at is push alerts... nobody cares what's happening with jimbobs dog in Yuma Arizona...
