BriWi in Studio 3C anchoring coverage of the Columbia explosion. The old Nightly set from 1999-2007.

WCAU's version

What was with NBC's fixation w/ "control room" type sets in the '90s and '00s?

My best guess is to emulate Nightly's look at the time? Any stations still use this look?

WRC's version

This particular version was originally created for Dateline NBC but then sold as a stock backdrop that a lot of stations used at the time. WITI had it on the 1998 set until the set refresh in 2006. It's actually a photo of WNBC's old analog master control room.

I'm pretty sure control room backdrops were just "in" at the time, kinda like how multiviewer screens are a trend in newsrooms right now, and monitor walls are on every new set going in.

I read somewhere NBC purchased WCMH's set for cheap from some small market Kentucky station in 2002 upon the debut of the Novocom graphics and The Tower.

I wouldn't mind if this style came back, honestly.

Control room galleries gave that sense you were monitoring developments EVERYWHERE. It may be a little too over the top at the small/medium market level, but at the network level it's WAY better than "giant monitor in the middle of the room".

Wasn't the old Nightly News backdrop and the backdrop they've used for their flashcams a recording of the old Seacaucus MSNBC control room at night?

Additionally while a multiviewer screen is a bit distracting I wouldn't mind seeing something similar but up on a monitor to the side for bump shots. Something showing the different feeds coming in - like a much smaller version of Al Jazeera's News Grid.
