On-air laryngitis

From personal experience, I know how hard it is to cope with cases of laryngitis especially when you work in a public setting where your voice is very important and is needed. Why do on-air personalities insist on working when they have laryngitis? I've noticed this frequently over the years. I've seen times of laryngitis that get so bad where they attempt the early evening newscasts but are not on the later ones. It's very distracting, taking away listening to what the personality is saying, and I do not understand why they insist on being on-air. They could still work behind the scenes until their voice is better and healed. It's happened both on the national and local levels. Even this weekend in the region I live in, an on-air personality was beginning to have a case of largynitis. Also, since I majored in tv and radio, I understand that this is a sweeps period and your primary on-air teams are expected to work the entire month. Do stations and news departments have contingency plans when rare situations like this occur? Thanks.

Sometimes the talent doesn’t realize how bad they sound until they use their “on air” voice (they project more typically) or hear themselves in their IFB*. It’s as simple as that, really — occasionally your voice sounds like crap even though you feel fine. Some people try to fight through it and perhaps maybe they should give the voice a rest.

*(technical note for those who care: many stations feed full Program into the anchor’s earpiece so they do hear their own voice. It’s often times why they restart their sentences after having their mic clipped.)

There was a week on Wheel of Fortune in the 90s where Pat Sajak had laryngitis, and one day it was so bad, to let his voice rest, he and Vanna swapped duties for the bonus round- he'd turn the letters (it was in the last year of the mechanical puzzle board) and she'd be with the contestant.

Please tell me there's a YouTube video of that.
