2007/08 DMA Predictions

Hmm I could see Jacksonville going to 49 and pushing Buffalo to 50. Orlando will rocket past Denver to 18, which if that happens Orlando did that feat with only 9 counties in its DMA while Denver needed half of Colorado, and parts of Wyoming and Nebraska to pull that off. Las Vegas is growing like a tumbleweed it will go up.

Memphis will likely drop to 46 or 47 depending on if they lose more counties to the lower markets. As for the Nashville market, I could see them staying put at 30 if their numbers don't surpass those of the Raleigh-Durham and Hartford numbers, which I seriously doubt. I know I'm gonna end up getting infinite negative karmas for this comment, but that's just how I feel, so bring it.

Las Vegas is growing like a tumbleweed it will go up.

Sure it's still growing, but it's not going to add another 41,000 households to pass Hampton Roads, VA. Las Vegas dropped a couple spots a couple of years ago before beginning its run upward. Las Vegas is a lot closer in the number of households to Memphis, OKC and Greensboro than it is to Hampton Roads.

In a nutshell: they're either staying at 43 or dropping.

Wow, Indy is above LV, i didn't know that.

Outside Clark County, there is pretty much very few people in the rest of the counties in LV's DMA.

The Las Vegas DMA is Clark, Lincoln and Nye Counties. Lincoln and Nye have about 15,000 households combined. Most of those households are in the town of Pahrump in Nye County.

But then again, according to Nielsen, there are several counties in Wyoming and Nebraska that are much much closer to Lincoln, NE, Cheyenne or Casper-Riverton, WY or Rapid City, SD that are considered part of the Denver DMA so go figure. ::)

Wait... You can actually drive north from Denver, pass from the Denver DMA into the Casper-Riverton one and then go back into the Denver DMA without changing direction?

Man.... I thought congressional districts were drawn weird!

Anyone want to take a crack at explaining this phenomenon to us clueless laypeople?

Wyoming is a strange bird for TV. The DMA lines were drawn long before many of the stations in Wyoming signed on the air. Nearly 70% of the population is assigned to a DMA outside of Wyoming.

Some examples:

Laramie, the 3rd largest city in the state and the home of the University of Wyoming, is a part of the Denver DMA even though it is 45 miles west of Cheyenne.

Sheridan, the 4th largest city is 150 miles north of Casper and 130 miles south of Billings, MT. However, the city is part of the Rapid City, SD DMA, a city 245 miles away. Why? For many years, the only TV station in Sheridan was KSGW, a satellite of KOTA in Rapid City. KSWY, a satellite of KCWY in Casper did not sign on until 2003.

A couple of years ago, the small town of Wright, WY was leveled by a major tornado. Even though the town is 90 miles north of Casper, it is part of the Denver DMA. No Denver station issued warnings.

Why does Denver have a significant chunk of Wyoming? It's because the Denver stations have been on satellite for years. Cable companies serving the small towns of Wyoming could pull down clean network signals instead of relying on old multi-hop microwave links from stations in Wyoming. KTWO and KCWY both have their signals on satellite in order to get cable companies to take it.

I think that map is inaccurate, as it is the Denver DMA for the TRUCKADS people, not Nielsen. Outside of that, the maps are fairly accurate.

What's Truckads?

New Hampshire's in a somewhat similiar situation. The southern half of the state is a sub-market of the Boston DMA, while the northern half is split between Vermont (Burlington, I think) and Portland, ME.

Kinda makes me wonder where Boston would rank if southern NH wasn't included in it.

Nooooooooo! I liked my DMA right where it was B)

Des Moines moved up 2 to #71

the biggest jump of the year was Lima, OH. up 11 from 196 to 185

That's really odd, because they made the drop from 185 to 196 last year. I wonder if there was some kind of anomaly with the data?

Guess it's time to update the site with the new data....

Can someone just post a list of it without me downloading a spreadsheet or applying for a website?

I predict Memphis will move up to 43 and that OKC will overtake Albuquerque/Santa Fe.

... I believe Memphis will either stay at 44 or actually drop down to 45. I see OKC taking Memphis' 44 spot, Memphis down to 45 and Albuquerque/Santa Fe holding 46 all by themselves.

Memphis dropped from 44 to 47. OKC stayed at 46; it was Albuquerque/Santa Fe that actually took Memphis' spot at 44.

The Phoenix market has been steadily moving up over the past 2 years and we were only slightly behind Tampa in terms over population as of last year, so I wouldn't be too surprised if Phoenix moved up to claim the number 12 spot.

Called it. Phoenix moved up to 12.

I may be the only one here who thinks that the Phoenix DMA is too big. I don't think it does a good enough job covering the entire market... stations in other markets do a better job of covering territory Phoenix fails to cover.

For example, they can give the eastern half of Riverside County, CA to Palm Springs or perhaps Yuma/El Centro. Graham and Greenlee Counties can go to Tucson and the Phoenix market will still be in decent shape.
