News 2 will have a 5:30pm newscast starting Monday night. They're also planning on extending their 11am show to a full hour, before the fall.

I hope this gets the station ratings. They need to put out a good product and not just rush this thing to the air.

and speaking of KWGN, I would love to see how that station did Eyewitness News back in the early 80's.

Until recently I always believed that Denver was the only large US city NOT to have had a station using the Eyewitness News name even though for years Colorado Springs ( KOAA ) did use it and KMGH channel 7 I believe at one point in the late 80s considered the idea but for one reason or another they went to "KMGH 7 News" instead.

WGN in Chicago is planning to do a 5:30pm newscast starting in September as well as expand their midday newscasst to 90 minutes starting at 11:30am.

A bit off topic, but yesterday, the station rebranded itself as just "2". I guess they know The CW's gonna die and they're pre-emptively scrubbing all references (and promotion, too!) of it from the station.

WLVI is actually doing better now than they were as a Tribune station. Sunbeam really got some great syndicated fare for it, and 7 News at 10 is going HD next week, so maybe we'll see a return of 'The Ten O'Clock News'...

Probably not, but it's worth a try...

EDIT: I remembered my avatar/signature... Ironic.

Hmmm, I dunno. Calling it just "2" is kind of ....naked. Calling it verbally "Channel 2" with a 2 logo sounds alot better. But I don't blame them for dropping the CW referrences.

I believe it's going to be a gradual process, overall. But if it does happen with Trib's big stations (WPIX, WGN & KTLA), that will really hit the fan for the CW television network, no matter how the outcome will be if the CW stays another season or not. And if other station group companies that have CW affils see what the Trib is doing, others might follow suit too.

I believe all the Tribune-owned CW stations are dumping the CW branding....

Great. Maybe KPLR can go back to "St. Louis 11 News @ Nine." or simply 11News.

I imagine that if KPLR does go the route of KWGN, KDAF, that it will be rebranded to St. Louis 11. There is a lot of history and heritage with that name which it hasn't used since the WB was formed. It would be nice to see it again.

that would be great if they did that route. although that CW 11 song that they made last year was kinda catchy... until they started playing it every hour.

also I wonder if we see KPLR adding a early evening newscast?????

Not likely. KTVI runs a distant 3rd at 5/6. KDNL didn't do to well trying to compete with 2, 4, & 5 at 5pm and 6pm, and they tried both. I'm not saying they shouldn't try it, but I wouldn't expect to see any effects for a few years.

In KDNL's case, I suspect had they consistently put a product out at 5 and/or 6, they may have leaped past KTVI; or not.

One thing I have noticed living here is that viewers are loyal to their TV stations. Since KDNL was the new kid in town so to speak, it had to put in a lot of effort to be on the level of 2,4,5. However since Sinclair cheaped out with the newscasts, it failed.

Only in the unlikely case that KPLR snags the ABC affilation from KDNL in 2 or 3 years will KPLR expand its newscasts. If that does happen, a complete overhaul is needed to bring it up to the level of 2,4,5 that I don't think Tribune is willing to pay for unless it does get ABC.

Sad thing is, I think the Simpsons reruns at 6 and 6:30 were more successful for KDNL than the newscasts were.
