Ntropolis 599 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 For future reference... put all HD news-related posts in the HD news thread: http://www.packofseven.tv/tvnt/showthread.php?t=2290&page=25 People won't miss it, you don't need to post a new thread in order for people to notice.
News24/7 3 Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 Here's their new open and sorry about the thread
DMA 135 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Well I'm assuming that this is the defacto thread for the new look, regardless of the fact that it's in HD. It looks much better in orange in than yellow, but the NBC Bay Area branding is pretty terrible. I'm confused about the use of palm trees however...
channel2 982 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 they need better music...WNBC03 doesn't really fit. No, it doesn't. I'd think Tower V.2 would fit better. And why can't NBC give KNTV a better logo/branding? "NBC Bay Area" makes the station sound like it's on channel 55. And the old logo sucked too; it was just "NBC11" in Futura. Can you say quick-fix?
News24/7 3 Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 I was thinking Tower v3. And finaly people agree with me that WNBC doesnt fit! Ditto for the NBC Bay Area Branding, it kinda remindes me of the original "NBC 3" logo. Also this adds fuel to the KRON 4 Channel Swap rumour donit?
mbhcity 3 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Palm Trees in the Bay Area? Are they referring to those few palms that hang around the Embarcadero? I was thinking redwood trees, a skyline, or a bridge would make sense....otherwise this just doesn't cut it. Now a bit of history and geography about Palm Trees in Calfornia. Palm trees are not even indigenous to California, considering that they grow in tropical regions. last time I checked the southernmost point in California was situated at 32 degrees N with the tropics situated between 25 North and South of the equator! Palm Trees were introduced to Los Angeles to promote the city during the 32 olympic games, promoting LA as more of a tropical destination, even though, Calfornia is geographically described as a Mediterranean or Chapparal region. This should be a lesson to the folks who use Palm Trees in news opens, (Yes, I also don't care much for KABC using Palm Trees in their opens during the CapCities era of the late 1980's) even though Palm Trees are not what our state are all about. Do not ever say that Palm Trees are what represent or use them as a representation of California, because they are not. The Redwood is our state tree! Use that Instead! Which makes me wonder if other stations will do the same...... Otherwise, like KNBC, this open can make people dizzy! And as for the KRON switch....who knows. If I were NBC, I'd make KNTV a Telemundo OnO and get KRON back..and KSTS can be a Spanish indy, just like KWHY. I would also move hq's back to SF...and establish tramisssion from Mt. Sutro, rather than San Bruno, where some viewers would get blocked out.
CircleSeven 1960 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 No, it doesn't. I'd think Tower V.2 would fit better. And why can't NBC give KNTV a better logo/branding? "NBC Bay Area" makes the station sound like it's on channel 55. And the old logo sucked too; it was just "NBC11" in Futura. Can you say quick-fix? You think that's bad, when they first started, they branded by their cable channel as "NBC 3" because at the time, their transmitters didn't stretch to the greater San Francisco area. I dunno if some Bay Area cable channels still have it as Cable 3. Yes the "NBC Bay Area" brand is bland and lame. They should've never dropped the Tower in the first place. They should've either use v.2 of the Tower or use the Groove Addicts' KNBC Theme.
WCAUTVNBC10 413 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I'm not liking how the open resolves to just a logo and plain backdrop. I do agree the orange is way better the yellow that KNBC uses.
ChicagosNewsChannel 1 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I wonder if WMAQ will get these graphics with blue?
Mrtraveler01 738 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 The graphics are alright. Except for the opening where they shove all the different spots in the Bay Area on that line that KNBC just puts Los Angeles on, it looks very cluttered. Also, the new NBC Bay Area name sounds terrible, it does sound like it is located high up the UHF band instead of Channel 11. It will take me a while to get used to calling KNTV that.
ChicagosNewsChannel 1 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Looking at the KNTV HD video they are using those blue sidebars like WMAQ, KXAS, and WTVJ.
first on fox 18 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Here is a non-shitty capture of the open. I'm too lazy to embed it, so deal with it. http://www.redlasso.com/ClipPlayer.aspx?id=1c15ec37-cfa4-4307-9c37-33aad6677a8a
DMA 135 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 They use a weird cut of WNBC 03...WNBC uses it to go into commercials.
900FrontStreet 0 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 NBC Bay Area is a perfect moniker if they want to go into the 24 Hour News Channel business a la WNBC. Otherwise it's just another identity crisis for this television station. NBC3, NBC11, NBC Bay Area, the bottom line is that they are not connecting with Bay Area viewers. Their ratings show that. But if you have nothing to lose, why not rebrand the station and take a stab at something new? Get rid of the palm trees, put in a CG of the Golden Gate Bridge and bring in some new music. Voila! Just maybe they'll see an increase of 1/10 of a ratings point in November.
Mrtraveler01 738 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Weren't there rumors that WNBC was going to be rebranded as NBC New York. Maybe that isn't as far-fetched as we previously thought. I would hate it if it did happen though.

rtmclaug 70 Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 It does look like this is the official HD graphics package for the NBC O&O's. I agree that the palm trees are a little out of place. I also think the "NBC Bay Area" branding is a bit silly. Go back to NBC 11. It kind of reminds me of the "Your NewsChannel 3" that WTKR used. Then again, the ratings for KNTV can't get any worse, can they? I mean, they're last place, aren't they?

DMA 135 Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Better Video: [YT]HN9jkZl6avY[/YT] It seems like there actually is a redwood in the titles...
KRAP-TV 146 Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Meh. I hate to be so pessimistic. The graphics are nice, but I'm not a fan of the single peacock feather concept. Everything else seems to be done well.
Mrtraveler01 738 Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Youre Seriously Joking right?^ I didn't think they were doing that bad. But I just wanted to check and see if there was something I didn't hear about. I couldn't find anything online.
caliwxdude 254 Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 All right, here are a few snapshots of the open and the lower third/OTS combo. The graphics are strangely in standard definition--not sure why that is since the remodeled control room should have included an HD character generator. I can verify that it is indeed a redwood tree that flies by in that very first peacock feather.
