Blizzard of 2009 - Storm Coverage

WABC as of now, is doing hourly updates, and constantly playing that annoying promo with the kids singing about how there is no school, lol. So far so good though.. Metro Traffic's Joe Nolan actually stayed on throughout the morning doing updates, not sure if he'll appear on the Noon broadcast. But I noticed this year though the stations aren't making that much of a big deal as they used to with these winter storms, even though it is sweeps month...

It seems they did the usual "beat it to death" snow, shark or add any other BS story they need to blow out of proportion. ABC went on at 4AM and the rest followed very shortly afterward.

Needless to say, another bad call by the weather people.

The biggest snow storm in New York City in three years...hundreds of schools closed, plus the last-minute decision to close NYC Public School for the first time since 2004..... doesn't sound like it was a bad idea at all to go on the air early.

I thought the weather forecasters at all stations actually handled this well.

WABC did an half hour extra of local news, GMA came on at 7:30am.

Wow thats a truly first for me at least, never seen or heard that done before, lol.

No, they just went to GMA at 7:30am. Not sure why they needed the extra 30min since they were on since 4am. :p

It's called ratings. Anytime there's a snowstorm or severe weather, WNYW and WPIX ratings are higher than the network morning shows because they're still local at 7am -- when most people are just about to head out the door -- while WABC, WCBS and WNBC usually switch to national morning newscasts. WABC staying local at 7am gave them the opportunity to retain viewers that would have turned to WNYW or WPIX.
