rhombics447 1 Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Deja vu, anyone? It was this time last year that we found out about Gannett's changes and it's that time again. As found in this blog post on Ohio Media Watch, Scripps will be centralizing it's graphics by late October (seems to be a choice month for these types of things). According to OMW, the graphics will be centralized out of WFTS in Tampa. Not sure if this will result in a standardized look and music, but I would not be surprised.
CLT-DCA-ORF-PTI 87 Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Well, it is definitely about time for WMAR. I believe they have had the same graphics since about 2003 ish. Hopefully its based off of the WFTS package or the ABC 15's (forgot call letters) package. I think I would be wishing for too much if I dream of the WPTV package.

Well they were somewhat leaning towards a centralized look seeing that some of the graphical elements at WFTS, KNXV, and WPTV (the lower 3rds and over the shoulders, for example) are about the same. The big question is will RenderOn be providing the graphics, will it be someone else, or will it be done in-house?
rhombics447 1 Posted July 10, 2009 Author Posted July 10, 2009 Here's an article about the consolidation and how it affects one station. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090710/ENT/907110334/1055/NEWS/WCPO+to+shed+jobs
jestbiteme 13 Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 According to OMW, the graphics will be centralized out of WFTS in Tampa. Oops! They're screwed.
mre29 1563 Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 I wonder why WFTS and not, say, the station that's in the same city as corporate HQ (WCPO).
A3N 1002 Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Are they moving the graphics hub to Tampa to maybe poach some graphic's artists from WTVT/FOX hub? That could be a reason, seeing as WFTS' graphics are nothing to write home about.
detroiter313 181 Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 If that happens, will WXYZ (Scripps largest TV station in Detroit and Michigan) will follow the same route as its sister stations graphics-wise?
TennTV1983 807 Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 If that happens, will WXYZ (Scripps largest TV station in Detroit and Michigan) will follow the same route as its sister stations graphics-wise? I believe that's the point of centralizing graphics as it seems like every large station group is looking at going towards a uniform look for all of their stations in an effort to save money.
rhombics447 1 Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 If that happens, will WXYZ (Scripps largest TV station in Detroit and Michigan) will follow the same route as its sister stations graphics-wise? Probably not. Gannett showed zero mercy to it's stations, for example, graphics-wise (at least the main newscasts). I'm guessing they'll do whatever will save them $$$$.
Mrtraveler01 738 Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Well this is good news for KSHB viewers. Even after going HD, their graphics look horrendously cheap and dated. Even going to WFTS style graphics will be a step up for them.
rhombics447 1 Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 I'm sure we'll learn more about this as the summer goes on. Does anyone know if this will be like Gannett's situation where stations will share resources, have to "order" graphics, etc? I've found limited information on this, likely since it was just announced the other day.
Jess 1116 Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 depends on how things work out. If they adopt AXIS like Gannett and Fox did, most of the in-show still graphics will be generated by producers. The hub will be responsible for everything else. Not happy by this move, but if they get Renderon or something to do it then it'll be okay. If it's WFTS-like, then we're in trouble...

WFTS's new stuff is actually pretty nice...
Jess 1116 Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 then maybe that might be the stuff they're standardizing around then? seems quite easy to modify that to a station logo or other network logo. And I agree it looks quite nice... renderon?
rhombics447 1 Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 Here's some more info I found on it. Unfortunately, the entire centralization results in doom and gloom for some. http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/314890-New_Scripps_Hubs_Spell_Downsizing.php
