  1. Santos started as a reporter at KION/KBCA in the late 90's in Monterey/Salinas. Santos got his wx chops in Seattle and Vegas Nancarrow started as a reporter at KFMB in the early 80's. Larry Himmel went to WX after reporting ...but bounced all over the place. Keep an eye on Jeff Zevly as he is earning the nickname of "Larry 2.0"

  2. Do you think the Chicago-centric shows are helping NBC 5 increase their ratings at 10?

  4. To be totally honest if NBC were offering this as a supplemental / optional coverage for the central time zone they should have provided resources to WMAQ to make it great. It went out to 42 other stations and nationally on Cozi and Telexitos in addition to WMAQ/WSNS.

  5. It's both states. It's kind of a weird DMA as it overlaps with other markets, especially Topeka. Both Topeka and KC "claim" some counties as being in their DMA and will cover them if necessary. Depending on where you live you will easily get both markets. It's large too, ranging from the MO/IA and KS/NE borders halfway down to the OK and AR borders. Since all stations only have one transmitter, severe weather coverage in the spring can be especially frustrating if the stations are tracking a tornado near the MO/IA border that isn't affecting 99.99% of the viewing area.

  6. Do you really think 5's news operation is better funded than 7's? That seems a little iffy... The Tonight show certainly helps but the 9pm shows only help if your 10 is strong enough to hold viewers from tuning out... For example: ABC is the consistently highest rated network by far here in Detroit... But come 11pm there's a huge switch over to the NBC station because the operation has been stronger for a long time. This has even held true after their 11pm has rotted rather badly in the last year...

  7. Spot on. I think a lot of people are forgetting that WLS (as most ABC O&O's) is a bloated operation. It made sense that this GM has had to come in and start pruning where possible. Is the outcome the best? No. But that is the reality of television news, this day in age. The problem with WLS is that they did not follow the KABC approach properly. If you're going to can old[er] talent, make sure that you replace them with talent that are already on the roster/familiar with. For several years now, KABC has been shedding talent, but there isn't that much of a drop off because by the time that talent leaves, the younger/newer hires have several years at the station and built up some kind of recognition.

  9. He's a class act, a professional, a grade-A talent and one of the very best veterans in the market. Congratulations to him on the anniversary. Yet it feels like he can go more.
