  1. It's not their best look, and it's not the best thing to come out of Linear Drift. But it's manageable, and it certainly refreshes from an out-of-place and outdated old KOIN "arrows" package they were using. Given the station's history when it comes to creative services choices, I'd say this is pretty refreshing. It's not as jarring as that old gray/purple/navy blue look with the abrasive serif font and the lightning bolts they had about a decade ago. Even the sharpness and red applied to the old Young HD graphics. Like if a station was going for graphics that screams brutal murder, WRIC has a history. I can understand slightly the hate for the old 8 logo, it was kind of scary and jarring looking, very sharp like razor blades. But it was unique, very unique. What they use now and have used for a few years now isn't, it's very uninspiring. But to be honest, these new graphics are the first time I can look at WRIC and not be scared shitless by graphics, and that's like for the first time EVER, in over 30 years. Heck, even the animation of the open in the last package it replaced was too jarring. Now, it seems the station is finally starting to soften up it's longstanding "guy hiding in a dark corner with a knife and a menacing smile" image that they seemed to have had for a long time. And if you don't agree with me: (Why is the transition sharp razor blades?!)

  2. Wirtz and Reinsdorf wouldn’t need to start entirely from scratch. They could feasibly buy out Comcast’s 25% share of NBCS Chicago and they’d have their own RSN. Given that Comcast can’t find a buyer for their RSNs (since they aren’t in demand,) this would be an easy way for Comcast to sell one of them. Both sides would essentially get what they want.

  3. WVUE evening anchor Kim Holden announced her retirement during the 5 pm newscast today. She started at the station in 1988 as an intern, then worked her way up to the evening anchor desk, where she has been for the past 12 years. Her retirement is effective in a couple of weeks. I believe Angela Hill has been an anchor in New Orleans longer than she has. *Man, I'm getting old. 5. I don’t get the hate for that old logo. It’s better than a generic 8.

  6. I bet this is less about a rigid programming schedule for their staff and more to do with cable operators agreements. As news programming has grown, the "general entertainment" programming from WGN America's original format has shrunk. Most old school contracts have a minimum number of hours that must be dedicated to the channel's stated programming purpose. So while I think NewsNation probably would have liked to cover it - and certainly had the resources to given the availability of a clean feed - I bet they couldn't afford to lose 3+ hours of their entertainment schedule. Ultimately this is one of the biggest problems for this channel. The need to still fulfill old carriage agreements while trying to take on a new mission. At some point they need to go all in if they are going to try to be a full-service news network.

  7. "Oh sorry, the news isn't happening during our regular news programming schedule, so we're not covering it." lol

  8. Here's a behind the scenes photo they showed today, in tribute to the director who is leaving. Really sad what the quality of this show has become.

  9. I don't think Comcast/NBCU has EVER had a retransmission spat get into a dispute where channels are pulled. They simply say "Yes" and just tack on the fee to the customer. All we've seen is distant NBC affiliates getting pulled in favor of their O&Os.... Based on TVNewsCheck's Top 30 list for station groups, Tegna is now #3 behind Gray and ahead of Sinclair with only 51 stations, 39% actual and 32% FCC discounted reach, and $2.88 Billion in revenue. That outpaces Sinclair's $2.78B total but lags behind Gray's $3.3B. $1.5B of that is advertising, and the rest is retransmission. https://tvnewscheck.com/business/article/nexstar-still-no-1-gray-scripps-allen-busy-buyers/

  10. Time to blow the dust off this thread. The weather graphics are almost always the canary in the coal mine, the fist sign of changes. These debuted at 4pm, and they align with all new graphic teases I've seen, from the colors, to the font, to even the little arrows that appear in a few spots. Nice reminder: if anyone quotes this post, please remove the screenshots from the quotation box.
