  1. No wonder why they must've been delayed so many times since announcing their return to news. They wanted everything right and they didn't launch until the full quality was perfect. Take it like a company that was releasing a new product. You see something wrong with one of the new features. Do you release that product with the flaw, or just delay it until you fix it? A quality company would delay it, and that's the case with CBS News Detroit. By the way...you don't see many companies doing that nowadays

  4. Again, it misses the larger point: CBS has a stand-alone in a top 10 market that is poised to dump the CW anyway and become an independent. They are not going to keep running WUPA as a pass-through independent in the long-term.

  5. Here’s the thing: CBS has a station in Atlanta which is currently an affiliate of the CW (and possibly could be going indie). They aren’t going to keep the running the station as a stand-alone indie in a top 10 market. Nor do they have anyone to sell it to (friendly reminder that this is no longer a buyer’s market for TV stations or for large-scale M&As). Given that WWJ-TV is merely simulcasting an OTT/SVOD with a smattering of syndication and CBS programming, it’s not TOO outside the box to see CBS make WUPA, WTOG and KSTW in-house CBS O&Os. And even that LPTV in Indianapolis, WBXI-CD. Sure, CBS could use WTOG, WBXI-CD and KSTW as bargaining chips to get further established stations—and they probably will—but WWJ-TV and CBS News Detroit might be giving them a road map for the future that’s already under all of our noses.

  6. Yo, what exactly has Gray Television done that would provoke CBS to leave WANF?? Everyone keeps saying this. I don't get it. If CBS wanted to move to 69, they'd have done so back in 2006 or a long time ago. There is a reason why they sold 69 only to regain it coincidentally just after merging with Viacom. If things went South with the CW, they'll just either run an independent, do something else we don't expect them to do with 69 or sell 69 into a duopoly with one of the other stations and MAYBE get something back. But I don't even see any reason why they'd dump the CW as long as they still have that small ownership stake. Otherwise, they'd have dumped the full 100 in Nexstar's lap. To say nothing of just how badly Gray could screw CBS up if CBS really tried to pull its programming from 46. Remember, there are many more CBS stations owned by Gray. By this logic, WTTV should still be the CW affiliate and WBXI should be CBS.

  7. Actually, there might be some hope on that: During telecasts of the NFL Playoffs, the bug on the top right corner was refreshed. And it looks like the new peacock design, but with a white border added; so there may be some applications where the border will stay intact.

[Replying to a few replies to my comment on the CBS News Detroit thread...] I know that, but the logic in the specific post I was replying to -- your logic -- didn't say anything about CBS owning a station in Atlanta, so I didn't take that into consideration. I think I missed the part about the CW being dropped from WUPA. Has that been confirmed and/or announced? And.... how has this thread not been shoved over to the Speculatron?

  10. My guess have been that sports graphics are getting bigger, after years of being made smaller, because networks want them (at least the scores) to be more easily seen from across a bar. But watching in my own den, these graphics often look comically large.

  12. Okay but a vast number of CBS stations and indeed a number of stations owned by Gray in general don't brand with the network. As long as Gray keeps paying those checks for reverse comp, WANF should be fine.

TitanTV identifies the vast majority of major network stations (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, The CW and MyNetworkTV, as well as many Univision, Telemundo and UniMás stations) using the station’s logo, not the logo of the network they carry (like what TV Guide, Zap2It and other TV listings sites do). This is also true of most independent stations listed on the site. Most of the time, the network logo is only used as the identifier if the station or a subchannel carries a diginet, or a religious or public television network.

  19. Firstly, CBS owns the trademark to "Eyewitness News". Secondly, no. Both "Action" (which is owned by Cox!) and "Eyewitness" are cliché and ancient brands that do not need to be picked up by anyone not already using them.

  22. If they mean the full-screen bar with wasted space they've forced onto College Hoops/BTN, then yes, this definitely meets that definition; I can't stand that bar at all. The other thing I'm thinking is AR perspective despite most everyone being done with AR as the only ones who have benefitted are advertisers on the field or on sidelines (this won't happen in the NFL for now due to specific field rules disallowing that).

There was a point in time in 2018 or 2019 that I thought to myself and realized....there's hardly any scripted TV shows on television that people want to see, mainly because, as someone alluded to earlier, these companies put their money where their mouths are, and that's with the streaming services. I mean...is it safe to say all these big 4 networks have outside of reality, news, and sports are their legacy shows? NBC with their Law & Order trifecta...ABC and Grey's Anatomy...CBS continuing on with NCIS after all this time....Fox with two Sunday night animated comedies in Family Guy and The Simpsons, I guess? One thing's for sure, nobody I know is flocking to the TV for the newest ABC drama or CBS' next big comedy led by a well-known actor. This leads me into my next point. Appointment television. I miss the hell out of it, or at least what comes with it. When I used to watch Chuck on NBC, I had quite a number of days where I'd hop on Twitter and follow along with everyone watching the show at the same time. I did this with a few other shows and a quite often once I found subreddits in Reddit for my favorite shows. That level of camaraderie is something you can't replicate with a Netflix or Disney+ show that rolls out new episodes at 3am on a Wednesday or Friday. While this isn't going to take away from whether or not people enjoy a series, appointment TV is something that'll rarely be seen, or at least not in the droves that it would lead to if you had to tune into a show at 8 or try and watch a DVR recording a week before the next episode.

  25. NextTV posted an article yesterday about the issues in the current syndication market. Apparently, ABC really, really fought to keep Wheel and Jeopardy on its stations because Disney sees them as important, which makes perfect sense; after all, not only are they two of the most popular shows in syndication today, but ABC also runs prime time versions of both.

  28. WANF (and WNBC) included, standing desks sometimes makes the height contrast look distracting. Are they standing for the entirety of the 2 1/2 hour broadcast? They should mix sitting and standing for long newscasts such as mornings.

  29. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if they beat channels 11, 5, AND 2 in the ratings. Their new image has me under the impression that ANF has Serious potential to be #1 in Atlanta for years, if not decades to come.

  31. -No CBS logos on the ANF website, which is normal when stations are losing their affiliation; -Meredith renewed their CBS contract in 3-year increments, the last contract was in 2020, probably ending in 2023; -Low rated station CBS wouldn't miss; -CBS dumping CW from CBS-owned Channel 69; -Better dial position (hit the down button from Channel 2 and 69 is where you end up); -Maximum power signal at 1000 KW. All signs are pointing to this being the new WJXT, WISH, WHDH.

  32. I'm sorry I got everybody off on a tangent, but CBS needed some place to park the CW back in the old days. Now they don't. But just take a look at the WANF website. Not a CBS logo in sight. I don't think it's a stretch to think they are going the way of WISH, WJXT and WHDH. Gray didn't have to do anything just as Sunbeam didn't have to do anything in Boston. CBS may just want to bring things in house. What you see in this Detroit launch will probably end up being relevant in Atlanta. I just noticed the Atlanta News First thread below. Sorry if I went off on a tangent. LOL
