Seems unfair to turn this ugly incident into a referendum on the woman being slurred here. I think we can do better.9 points

Perhaps things seem fishy to you because you do not have the facts, or care to understand them? Lori did not mysteriously leave with a taped goodbye. They blew out the the last 6 minutes of their newscast for a highlight reel and she said goodbye to viewers live on the air. They also posted her final sign off from EWN on social media. All of that for a person who decided to leave for a gig on a competing morning show. And there is no consensus that Shirleen is not well liked, or that she is well liked for that matter. There are a small number of posts by anonymous people claiming they know what type of person she is in real life based on how she appears on television, or claiming to know her from 20 years ago to now. Perhaps there is truth to it or perhaps it’s all made up. There’s nothing verifiable and no data to make any of it a fact let alone a consensus.7 points

It still does NOTHING to either solve the conflicts in ownership in 5 markets, nor does it settle the issue of foreign money being involved. They could promise 10 years and that wouldn't work.6 points

The idea that Shirleen pushed and shoved her way up I-95 to dethrone Lori is laughable. Clearly WABC management had some kind of long-term plan to groom a new morning anchor, and if it wasn't Shirleen, it would've been someone else. She's not some homewrecker, and honestly, using the Rosato incident as an excuse to air Allicot grievances just comes across as defending Ken's word(s), even if not the intention.5 points

I really hope those aren’t the final draft of the graphics. They should stop condensing the font to illegible levels, especially if they’re still going to use long, descriptive headlines. Plus, I hope they found a better place for their incessant promo boxes instead of just sitting on the top of the lower thirds. If they didn’t change that, it’ll be the same cluttered mess the current graphics are.4 points

This is sickening. Just more of the content owners trying to take control of their own content, so only they can own it and the viewers can only watch it the way the owner wants them to. The viewer is going to prevail in the end. It's how VCRs came into play. And with the right amount of ingenuity and legal standing, The viewers are going to find a way to have control of what they receive on the air.4 points

My immediate guess for the reason for this shift is simply that there are fewer people around in newsrooms who are now doing even more things, so making fancy, bespoke graphics falls by the wayside. You'll still see plenty of OTSes on the network evening news, but they have full art departments to pull stills from each story or design matching elements to make them great and worthwhile. Local stations are far less likely these days to have their own in-house graphic designers, so OTSes are made by the newscast producer. Producers aren't graphic designers – they're more than likely picking pre-made graphics from a library, which are usually IMO poor quality and never story-specific. Producers are also tasked with so many other responsibilities to the point that OTSes or other unique presentation elements are just farther down the list of priorities. I wonder if there has also maybe been some consultant research done on this as to whether viewers aren't impressed by them anymore. Does the same OTS with the same moody picture of the thumbprint and police lights really do anything to advance a crime story? Or an OTS that says nothing other than "New at 5"?3 points

With CBS dropping the CW on WKBD, looks like Nexstar "might" have found a new home.... Looking at this paperwork, Adell Broadcasting is selling WADL to Mission Broadcasting for $75M. Nexstar will provided services to WADL, including an SSA, an option agreement, and sell of commercial time.2 points

Enough time has passed since the Curry ouster. That's still a hard moment to re-watch and they never regained that number one slot like they hoped.2 points

If that’s true, then the blame is solely on Camille Edwards and Dave Davis. Not Shirleen. No offense, but blaming an anchor for the missteps of a news director and GM who haven’t been in the building for years is beyond unfair, especially when this talk about Shirleen amounts to nothing more than baseless gossip. Are we supposed to blame Sade Baderinwa for taking Roz Abrams’ old job now? I get it, but in any workplace, you have a responsibility to maintain standards of professionalism. No one claims to know what the working environment was like, nor do I think anyone is trying to “destroy” Ken. However, we do know that WABC fired Ken with cause. I don’t like the fact that he’s gone either, but there are ways to settle your problems without getting your a$$ kicked out the door. I work with plenty of people I don’t care for, but if I called any of them that slur, I’d be gone too.1 point

That's what CNN does, compromise it's little integrity for a temporary rather than long-term ratings bump. MH -370 is the prime example. Is that the best CNN could do graphics wise??? SMH. Right now MSNBC has the best sets and Fox News has the best lighting. None of the three cable networks have strong graphics.1 point

This is getting ridiculous. I’ve not once seen this discourse around Shirleen in the decade she’s been at WABC yet suddenly everyone’s had a negative opinion of her just days after we learned she was called an offensive term. FWIW, Ken and Shirleen seemed to have a great on and off air relationship. I never got a sense that she was cold to him or vice versa.1 point

We're all allowed to have our opinions just as you are! The consensus is that Shirleen wasn't very well liked. Not saying she deserved to be called that, if she was. I also feel this is leftover resentment from the way Lori was pushed out for a younger version of her. I think we all wondered why Shirleen was brought in from 6abc in Philly just to do the Noon when Channel 7 at the time had a very stable anchor roster and incredible ratings. Then she started filling in on the morning show more and more. You can't control how viewers feel. And then Lori mysteriously leaves after 18 years with taped goodbye? Always seemed fishy to me!1 point

Kevin Adell certainly bided his time and got the result he wanted; he probably gets to keep a couple subchannels for the Word Network and Sonlife/whatever he wants, Nexstar gets a station in the state's prime market (and no more sub-deals for debates for Detroit coverage), and Adell no longer has to deal with the headaches of running a TV station to focus on 910. If WMYD would've taken the CW, they would've by now and LIV wouldn't be in the WDIV subchannel purgatory.1 point

He's just blowing smoke. Again. The FCC isn't going to reopen the door on this. They made their decision. It's going to the judge.1 point

CBS 2 CBS News New York recently started using different music for many opens and bumpers. I haven't figured out a pattern but they sometimes use it and sometimes use the regular theme. The music does not have the CBS signature and can only be described as "somber church bell." I don't understand what's happening over there.1 point

Disagree. It appears that they integrated (or simplified) things and eliminated having multiple separate boxes (a logo box, live box, time/stock box, etc...). In addition, it also appears that the rolling ticker is gone. It's a much cleaner look while keeping their core color palette (red, white and black). Again, we have to wait and see how everything comes together.1 point

Yeah, that doesn’t look great. I’d also have to see it in action to have a more informed opinion, but based off of that image…that looks like something one of us would make as a mock-up.1 point

If these are the new graphics, then they are not great. If this is an update, it's not bad; it's alright.1 point

Personally, I never liked Shirleen. She never had that warm and fuzzy feeling that morning anchors are supposed to have. There is a reason why Ken had the job since 2007. I'm hoping the rumors aren't true because that would be a terrible way to go out. It's a safe bet Mike Marza gets the job. He's been auditioning since the day he started!1 point

To be fair, this is Friday night we're talking about. It may not be quite the "death slot" it was just a few years ago, but I'm guessing it's still the weakest of the weeknights for a lot of channels. Also, I'd kinda like to know the ratings for Thursday -- the night after the Town Hell.1 point

If I had to guess, CBS wanted WADL to be run like an O&O, which Adell balked at. NBC tried a similar thing with KRON when Young Broadcasting bought it a few years later, and all that accomplished was costing NBC its longtime Bay Area affiliate, forcing them to buy KNTV, a longtime alternative ABC affiliate that was at this point sharing The WB with what was then KBWB (now KOFY). The only reason CBS bought WGPR in the first place was because, after Adell said no, they had literally no other options. WKBD, the lame duck Fox affiliate, was owned by Paramount, who wanted to reserve that station for UPN. They tried to get WXON to affiliate, but they demanded $200 million for a buyout, which CBS said no to; they ended up with The WB. WBSX, the eventual Pax/Ion station, was an HSN affiliate. And the remaining Big 3 affiliates, WXYZ and WDIV, were happy just as they were, the former in particular led to a deal with owner Scripps that led to another set of dominoes too numerous to list here.1 point

Don’t know about you but I think WKBD going independent is going to benefit the station. Not only can CBS News Detroit expand which will only mean more advertising revenue for the station, WKBD can go back to its roots, which is to do OTA live sports again. I for one am excited. Looks like CBS is putting a lot of money into WWJ which only helps its sister station.1 point

Even though it was almost 30 years ago with the New World-Fox deal, these stations really had to scramble to fill in some of their dayparts after losing either NBC, ABC or CBS to FOX. Even moreso, if they turned down the Fox Kids block (which most did) and sent that to another station. For about 4 or so years, WJW in Cleveland had an afternoon sitcom block from 1-3pm. Shows included were All in the Family, Barney Miller, Laverne & Shirley, Family Ties, The Odd Couple, and The Jeffersons. They were all past their runs, so it was cheap and easy cash syndication. At the time, it was a way to see a show I hadn't seen in years, as well as being the first time I've ever watched AITF during my summer breaks. By 1998, this block was gone and FOX had secured more syndicated talk shows to fill out the schedule.1 point

Asked by Nathanson what the company has learned from broadcasting LIV so far, Sook quipped, “What we’ve learned is you probably don’t want to switch to the app with a three-man playoff with Dustin Johnson in it with three holes to go. But usage of the app on Sunday was up 340%, so life wasn’t all bad.”0 points
