Sorry, but I'm not a fan. This doesn't feel like much of a substantial improvement. It very much has a "designed by committee" vibe to it. The opens are too busy, and the 3D elements already look just slightly out of date. The supers and fullscreens are fine, but nothing amazing. I think the KABC/KGO look is still the best of the bunch by far.4 points

It's comparable to my doctor praising me for losing 3 pounds this year compared to one pound last year. Sure, the percentage of growth is big - but the reality is the audience is still not substantial. Their PR team does a great job selling a story that's all smoke and mirrors.2 points

No taking notes by WABC. They're getting it. All 8 stations are getting it. Period. WABC changing their wordmark is not clear, either way. 'Similar' is the point. The lower thirds (and likely yellow as an accent color) will be universal. It's the opens, segment brands, etc. where the stations have the freedom. WLS chose this cut for WLS. Everyone is doing their own thing. They're continuing with all the cuts they adopted in 2013, for closes, bumpers, etc. Sorry for the multi-quote. Just easier to break it down, point by point.2 points

I could see Dane taking up 'the mantle', if you will, covering politics. But Scott has co-moderated the 2019 & 2023 Chicago mayoral debates and appears to have an interest in covering politics. That said, one could argue that there is no longer a need to have someone cover the political beat full-time. As far as what to air in place of 'Flannery Fired Up!'...they could bring back 'Later with Leon' to air Fri. and Sat. and just expand GDC Sunday to 7-9A. They did air a 30-min feature show back in April called 'Chicagoland' that, if I'm not mistaken, aired in place of 'FFU' all three days, so it's possible they were testing that show out as a replacement.1 point

Ten years is a good run and he accomplished a lot (most notably the renovation of the station's offices, newsroom, etc..). Hopefully the next GM will continue to strengthen the station. Flannery is leaving at the end of the month too, so I'm curious to see who will cover the political beat going forward.1 point

If WLS is using music that dates back to 1994 (I think), I doubt WABC or KABC is changing anything music-wise (especially how expensive it reportedly is to commission upgrades from Warner Chappell). I could see them dropping talent opens, but that’s about it.1 point

It's been a minute. But two new petitions today. One, Gray has filed a petition to switch another one of its newly-acquired stations from last year's auction from VHF to UHF. KWNV in Winnemucca, NV is vacating VHF 7 for UHF 16. Previously, Gray filed to switch its Yuma signal from VHF 11 to UHF 27. The other, NPG has filed to switch Idaho Falls station KIFI from VHF 8 to UHF 18.1 point

It's like how KCPQ in Seattle acquired repeats of Judge Judy after KIRO, which had aired her for nearly 20 years, dumped syndication for news at 4:00. Ch 13 did have Judge Judy for a brief time in the late '90s.1 point

For the month of May, NewsNation was up triple digits in both total primetime viewership and in the key advertising demographic of viewers aged 25-54—with 102-percent year-over-year growth in the former and 100-percent growth in the latter.1 point

That is exactly what it feels like to me here. They were going to fight... Till they realize that it would be cheaper to merge and have a way to bring in way more cash then it currently does!1 point

It was designed by Smith Geiger Vivid Zero who designed the rest of the ABC look.1 point

There's not many things I dislike about this package. I'll agree the opens are a little busy, it will be interesting to see how they evolve over time. The music though... The music is bad. I am sure some people are going to love that previously unheard cuts of the "classic" music are being used, but hoo boy, they are 22 years old, and you can tell why they were tossed in a drawer in 2001 and forgotten about. My understanding is these might not have been their first choice, but for various reasons this is what they ended up with. It would be nice if they find the money in the coming years to commission something new. It's past time for some of these Gari packs on the O&Os to be put out to pasture, or at least updated to not sound like a bunch of 90's synth work.1 point

My bad, that was a glitch on my phone. The submit button didn't take me back to the main thread page. One more: WNCN is 17, WTVD is 11.1 point

Someone posted earlier in the thread that call letters aren’t much of a factor when it comes to affiliation changes. FOX 5 in SD is still operating as KSWB (San Diego’s WB)1 point

Moving David to mornings was actually the original plan - team him with Shirleen - AM and noon, Bill and Liz at 4 and 6 and Mike and Sade at 5 and 11 - but that has since been passed on. Bill not too keen to give up 11 permanently until after the 2024 election cycle. however, talk as of late has Mike moving to 5pm in the interim. After 2024, Bill staying on at 6pm only.1 point

Jim Rosenfield, formerly of WCBS and WNBC - most recently of WCAU was in the building today. Not that it necessarily means anything - but he did a test with Shirleen.1 point

It's not so much "give" as the ABC O&O has right of first refusal for the Monday Night games. After that, the CW/MyTV/indies of the world effectively "bid" to air the games. I'd imagine a similar procedure is at play, for the WNBA game.1 point

so is Saudi Arabia money dirty or not? you make it sound like the SG/TEGNA deal's dirty money mattered and this doesn't.1 point

KRON will add a 2pm newscast and will rejoin everyone else at 11pm. Safe to say the 8 and 9 will be axed. https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/kron4-to-become-cw-affiliate-this-fall/0 points

I think I prefer something simpler. I’d rather have the Scripps package than this. There are too many elements moving all over the place, the mashup music is jarring and strange. The live bug is weird looking and reminds me of something CNN might use. For spending years making it the whole thing looks like a ridiculous rush job. Color me disappointed. WLS downgraded big time. I’ll second whoever said it looks like WABC’s package.0 points

I think its a brilliant dynamic package. it might be a big much for older viewers to wrap their heads around. But I think its brilliant. Dont like the chopped together opening. I hate there is no music bed after the opening. It feel abrupt. Not sure about the cobble together opening theme.0 points
