  1. While that’s true, I don’t see any other way that they could’ve addressed the problems in that newsroom, given that some at the station already tried addressing their concerns to corporate (at least, according to Matthew Keys). I understand that Nexstar has the legal right to fire them for publicizing that memo, and I suppose it’s not in the company’s interest to employ people who can’t be trusted with internal info. However, I think Nexstar also has a practical obligation to address the concerns that led to such a leak happening in the first place.

  2. FTVLive is reporting that the new and existing independent stations (minus Tampa and Seattle) will be going news-heavy (similar to KCAL) this fall. He also reports that CBS is ending the hybrid local-national NOW newscast in August. (h/t @24994J)

  3. It shows what a scam Nexstar and Mission are. In some areas the Mission stations were off of Dish, but now that Nexstar is off DirecTV, they are too. Which is it? They want their cake and eat it too. What a scam.

  4. Unfortunately for the producers, it is a fireable offense to send an internal information (i.e., a newsroom memo) out for publication.

  5. The 2 producers definitely should not have been let go.. Tang and Fox definitely needed to go

  6. At least he made it to being a centenarian (Betty White and Hugh Downs came within striking distance at 99 each, but couldn't get there). Field in his prime (from a 1981 WNBC News 4 New York late edition, at the weather area talking to Chuck Scarborough):

  7. This actually happened a year ago. No idea why that website is publishing this as "news" today. lol

  8. If only they could have found a way to emulate the text-drawing of the original WeatherStar 4000, especially the clock in the upper right corner that blinks as the seconds tick by. Or heck, even a non-blinking clock in the upper right corner would be cool too.

  9. As much as Scott Jones (FTV Live) likes to call out the regression of modern-day broadcast journalism, the man fails at modern blog/website creation and simple editing of stories. ChatGPT could write better and more clearly than he does. He also thinks an email newsletter is revolutionary…in 2023. But, I will say, good for him for making a living (for 20+ years) with that site!

  10. I'll be curious to see how many different cities are covered on the Retro 8s. Going to have to remember to DVR it tonight. Also of note, because "Weather Doesn't Happen On Weekends™", both Retro 8s and Twilight Live are only scheduled to air on weekdays; however, because the TWC programming day starts at 5am ET, this means that Retro 8s actually airs Tuesday through Saturday morning at 4am ET while Twilight Live airs Monday through Friday morning at 5am ET. Also, it looks like they have already dumped the Byron Allen game show from their schedule. They must have gotten some backlash for that.

  11. A few updates for Scripps, mainly that as of Friday, The List and The Upside were cancelled, and have been replaced with a live hour of Scripps News a la NBC News Daily, which connects to the integration mentioned above. For The List, here's their goodbye video. The second thing is that the withered corpse that was the original HD graphics package for The Morning Blend from the Journal days (2008 vintage!) is gone and replaced with a sunnier Scripps-generated package. It's been on for months on KTNV, but just got to WTMJ. And here's the TVNC article regarding the change; it looks like it'll roll out to more stations in the fall, and KIRO is actually carrying it in Seattle.

  12. Actually, The Weather Channel ran live cut-ins during their docuseries block, at least in the afternoon. I caught one that ran during their 2:00 p.m. CT airing of Mayday: Air Disaster (about 20 minutes before the Greenwood, Indiana tornado touched down). Wasn’t familiar with the meteorologist they had doing the updates.

  13. Yeah, they gave Amy Monday-Thursday off last week and had her start the week on Friday. She hosted Weather Command and apparently Outnumbered on Friday, then Fox Weather First Weekend on Saturday, and then Fox Weather Live on Sunday. Weird thing is that on both days, instead of Amy directly filling in for the person who was actually off, they time-shifted the regulars who were present that day. On Saturday, Kiyana was off; however, Jane shifted down to fill Kiyana's slot, while Amy filled in for Jane's normal slot. On Sunday, Jane was off; however, Kiyana moved up to cover Jane's slot, while Amy filled in for Kiyana's normal slot. On both Saturday and Sunday, Rick Reichmuth was a third host on Fox Weather Live. However, unlike back in May when they were having Rick fill-in for the primary hosts, it seems that they're not doing that anymore. There was a significant severe weather event on Sunday afternoon, and again, neither Fox Weather nor TWC went live to cover it. During Fox Weather's first year of existence, they had enough on-air staff to have one meteorologist present on weekend afternoons and evenings to host live break-in coverage without the need for a production staff, which gave them an edge over TWC. Now it seems that they have gotten complacent with just ignoring any severe weather after 2pm ET on weekends. You watch, both Fox Weather and TWC will go live Monday morning with aftermath coverage of Sunday's severe weather, talking about how destructive the storms were. It's hard to take either of the networks seriously when they weren't there to cover it live, when it mattered the most.

  14. And I will always treasure Emergency! on DVD as well, especially in that that hit 70s NBC medical/action series w/Mantooth, Tighe, Fuller et al. was very much just about the work, both with the firemen and paramedics of Station 51, and with the doctors and nurses of Rampart General Hospital (that Chicago series that NBC has now doesn't come close).
