  1. Conspiracy: they did that on purpose during high parade viewership, hoping it would go unnoticed.

  2. Finally switching to the new logo, during a parade, 2 years after network's initial rebrand rollout isn't really a sign of anything.

  3. No, that's not a mistype. Dr. Phil plans to launch a new cable network by February which will feature him in primetime from a new base in the DFW Metroplex and former staffers with the talk show have also moved out there. And yes, he plans a news operation of some kind led by Joel Cheatwood, so make of that what you will. All I can say is it would probably be easier to lease time on OWN or another existing cable channel than launching a new one during the decline of the format, but apparently I'm not mainlining Dr. Phil's out-of-date gut here.

  4. What a waste of space. As if the world needs MORE cable channels...and more cable channels to not watch and be forced to pay for...

  6. Weigel is definitely not an afterthought in the market and they've long left their 90s era struggles at this point. They definitely have the more powerful schedule and good overall lead-ins outside mornings, and they (along with the other four ops in town) hire good people from everywhere rather than MMJs who are hamstrung from the get-go. WTMJ is just in a fugue state where they're still stuck trying to recapture their 90s peak, but with Carole Meekins about to depart they no longer have any of those people in the newsroom and it's mainly either personnel with no connection to the area, or those who came on to try to salvage things, or those who are just there because they sucked up to management still living as if Journal hasn't fully ceased to exist. There's just no encouragement there, or any management that wants it to be unique; their GM did absolutely nothing with WGBA and somehow got promoted, and their 'no comment' in that Next TV article says it all; it's a station that wants to do the bare minimum without Cincy catching onto them.

  7. I can think of at least half a dozen friends from my 15 years in news who have jumped to school district communications jobs. Holidays off, stable hours outside of the occasional evening school board meeting, an employer who won't be going anywhere any time soon, government benefits, and storytelling about the good things schools are doing rather than covering the crime of the day. And the school district gets a trusted person in the community to serve as the face and voice of the district in their internal communication channels and external earned media opportunities. No job outside of news is perfect, but this is a regular escape route for people who get out.

  10. WCPO uses their normal time/temp bug at 4:00 (that would be the top image). Not sure about WLEX, but WCPO's 4:00 show appears to be at least 30% live, 70% Scrippscast, so maybe that's why?

  11. Interesting. I haven’t caught the weekend news in a few weeks. Sandra is great but would agree that adding another anchor for 1 hour is interesting but no unconventional.

  13. I suppose he explained this so people would see his point of view. In reality, he just looks like more of a moron than ever. Especially since he flat out admitted that he wanted nothing to do with The CW in the first place, and only let WADL affiliate with it because he was planning to sell. Then why the hell is he whining about WMYD taking the affiliation he specifically said he didn't want in the first place????? EDIT 11/27/2023: And he's got Jesse Jackson and the families of the original African-American investors to back him. Somehow.

  15. Wow, that's so poorly written it makes me question factual accuracy. Once I see two spelling and/or punctuation errors, I'm done. But with all the speculation and the lack of proofreading aside, it wouldn't surprise me if it actually does happen.

  17. Since KCTV is channel 5.... WEWS capitalized on their channel number (5) to launch their 5:00 p.m. show years ago. There are a bunch of "Live AT Five" shows, but being on Channel 5 gives them the opportunity to brand their show as "Live ON Five"

  18. And now this from Cord Cutters News: BALLY SPORTS PLANS TO SHUT DOWN IN 2024.

  19. I guess Scripps figured the sports real estate was more valuable than the CW. The irony is that this was a Nexstar station after Meredith dumped it after acquiring KTVK. They figured cap space elsewhere was more valuable than having a station in Phoenix. And even more ironic, KASW signed on because KTVK wanted to stay an independent rather than run the WB programming in primetime.

  20. Smart way to use the WMYD leverage to fix what was an awkward situation of sports lead-ins and outs doing absolutely nothing. TVTitan shows it'll be rebranded so creatively as "Arizona 61", and it combines two Nexstar operations onto one signal for 15.2

  21. She is out of the business. She went into P.R. for a school district and sued the TV station for discrimination (moved to federal court, not sure where it stands now).

  22. Not just the Rangers. As per that article, Bally intends to walk away from MLB entirely after 2024. Of course, there are also major implications for MLB teams themselves. The loss of RSN money will likely impact payroll (see: the Twins).

  23. In the newscasts, no. The bug just cycles through the logo in my post and the WWLTV.com logo, even when the morning news moves to WUPL. (AFAIK, WUPL still has a 6:30pm newscast too.) Also, the morning traffic anchor confirmed WWL also received new theme music exclusive to them. There's definitely more jazzy horn elements. Here's this morning's open - they started with the wrong bug in the L3s but corrected quickly. https://www.wwltv.com/video/news/live_stream/wwl-louisiana-morning-news-at-430-am/289-c9822f51-4e97-441f-9f26-a4e4abe98d0f

  32. “I absolutely love talking to real people about real problems. People who aren’t just complaining but are actively looking for real solutions to better their lives,” McGraw said. “American families and our core values are under attack. I love this country, and I believe family is the backbone of our society. Together we are going to stand strong and fight for the very soul and sanity of America and get things that matter back on track.” This Dr. Phil quote from the announcement feels kinda TBN-ish in tone, now that I think about it

Yes, the same company who partnered with Byron Allen in the venture and who helped drive them into bankruptcy... https://nypost.com/2023/11/02/business/sinclair-broadcasting-wants-to-scoop-up-diamond-sports-sources/

  34. TEGNA is probably waiting on the syndication market to improve before they even consider the possibility of turning KTBU into a true independent similar in format to what KUBE was before it chose to go "shopping". Also important to note that Houston's sports media landscape is for the most part secure as the Astros and Rockets took over AT&T SportsNet and turned it into Space City, the Texans probably have a long-term deal with KTRK for the long haul and have for years, and the Dynamo are exclusive to Apple (for now). They may get a shot at the NHL should Space City pass them up (which may not be likely given Tilman Fertitta is the runaway favorite to own Houston's eventual NHL team and will likely want it on Space City, even if it means relegating them to a secondary feed at times). As for what team is most likely to be poached by TEGNA for a sports broadcasting deal, I would say the Rockies are the favorite since they can use the closing of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain as an opportunity to acquire the Rockies rights and build KTVD around the Rockies (perhaps even changing the calls to something more suitable), as opposed to fighting for airtime with the Nuggets and Avs on Altitude even though the overlap between MLB and NBA/NHL is relatively minimal since the start of the baseball season coincides with the winter sports' playoff schedule now almost exclusively on ESPN/TNT.

  35. Unless Tegna has a duopoly partner (like in Denver & Seattle), I don't think the networks they're affiliated with would be too happy pre-empting network shows to air a local ballgame. The network contracts are more iron-clad now and don't really allow for deviation unless it's a local news or weather emergency. Not to mention all of the retransmission consent dollars the networks have their hand in. And this includes stations like WBNS, who used to openly flaunt the OSU Buckeyes during basketball season, proudly pre-empting CBS shows to air an ESPN+ game in primetime.

  36. If they were really smart they'd go hard on local college teams as well, especially as realignment is still shaking up the broadcast landscape there. It'd be a great opportunity for some of their markets that are only near pro teams, but have a big variety of local college sports. Des Moines has Iowa, ISU, UNI. Louisville is near three NFL teams, but has local college teams in the Cardinals and Wildcats, and USL/NWSL soccer.

  37. I already knew they were airing Seattle Kraken preseason games on KONG-TV and select San Antonio Spurs games on KENS, so this honestly doesn't surprise me. Oh, and the Mets on WCCT, but that was grandfathered in from the former Tribune ownership. Most of what they list are either NFL teams they have preseason rights to or teams with limited coverage that doesn't include live games, but with DSG in deep doo-doo and the Colorado Rockies presently homeless due to AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountains going belly up, it's obvious that Tegna's keeping their eyes peeled.

  38. Looking into the WLMA sale to Marquee. They are airing WTLW's existing programming on their old frequency after the old owner (American Christian Television) sold them the channel 4 facility and hung onto a low-powered station for their WTLW channel. They've entered into a time brokerage agreement that started on March 1st of this year and ends February 29th, 2024 that simulcasts WTLW on WLMA. No word on if this is a year-to-year agreement, or a 1-year opportunity for Marquee to forge their own path for WLMA.

  39. AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain will close down at the end of the year; Full time employees are now laid off. The Rockies are considering new broadcast rights to Altitude Sports and Entertainment, or just air their games on public access/MLB.TV like the other rejects. The network is temporarily operating as SportsNet Rocky Mountain to last the rest of the year. Here’s the logo:

  41. I mean they won, so I feel that's still better than the Ion Episode Picker 9000 choosing what episodes of Criminal Minds to run that night (and the problem is trying to get both ESPN and TNT's permission for earlier rounds). If it's fine for the NHL Network to do, why not their broadcaster until games start?

  45. WWL-TV in New Orleans has dropped the long-standing “Eyewitness News” moniker for “WWL Louisiana”. So now it’s “WWL Louisiana News at XX”. Apparently a new tagline/positioner too? WWL-TV has in the past used “Louisiana’s News Leader” as a positioner, but “WWL Louisiana” just sounds weird to me. Any other Tegna stations trying something similar?
