1. Scripps has fired longtime KTNV Las Vegas GM Jim Prather. http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/1/9/fired-in-sin-city Prior to serving as KTNV's GM, Prather was GM at WTMJ in Milwaukee.
2. Remember that NBC doesn't put on this event, they just have the broadcast rights to it. The musical acts are entirely outside their control (though I'm sure they could help pull strings to get, I don't know, America's Got Talent performers...) I didn't see the whole show (just this video), but it looks to me like WMAQ's involvement is to provide the hosts and most of the broadcast aspect (the boring camera shots give away that someone who directs news for a living is directing the video here). The audio feed of everything happening on the stage is probably a mix from the "house board" (if they were using a system like Dante they could potentially have a "house mix" and an "air mix" on two separate boards, but I doubt it) more than likely being operated by someone from the audio vendor, which is why the hosts are so loud in comparison. WMAQ's involvement with the actual event itself is just about the same as the vendors who supplied the lights, trussing, staging, etc.
3. Exactly. You answered your own question!
4. Of course, it's Scripps so they only buy in bulk. Don't waste your money!! I'm John Mataresssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=JMK6lzmSk2o;t=53
5. Going to post this here since I saw it come up in the shoutbox: My sources have informed me that the move is permanent. There was something about CBSN taking over the studio space in the newsroom but that didn't sound like it was confirmed yet.
6. WBBM has loathed the fact they have a streetside studio since about a month after they moved in to it. There were rumors a few years ago that they were trying to get out of using it. I believe their 10-year commitment to the city to use that space as a television studio is going to be up next year, so we'll see what happens then. If you haven't noticed, the newsroom windows are also all covered over. I feel like they got homesick for the old McClurg Court facility and went around covering over everything that could possibly let sunlight in.
7. At least the whole "Denver 7" debacle might finally get fixed now.
8. I worked some sources on this, and while I didn't find out who wrote the campaign, I found out how it ended up on KTNV about a decade after WITI used it. A man named Jim Behling was KTNV's GM in the late 80's. Jim started his TV career in Milwaukee at WITI, where he worked in the promotions department for a number of years, though it's believed he was the Production Manager when WITI was using the promo. Unfortunately, as the link above shows, Mr. Behling passed away in 2010.
9. http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2016/11/9/scripps-to-get-new-ceo Scripps is getting a new CEO, and like in some Scripps newsrooms, it's the person who's currently overseeing "Digital". So expect more digital crap to make it's way to the TV side.
10. Some old WTMJ promos in here, including their knockoff version of "Hello Milwaukee" at 5:36. Also a high quality upload of parts of a newscast from 1972, featuring some interesting chromakey effects and use of the exciting Vidifont CG here and there (mostly at the end with a credits roll)
11. That "Beautiful 3A newsroom" is nearing 10 years old... It's also hogging a lot of valuable studio space, which is at a premium at NBC NY. You can put a newsroom anywhere but you can't really put a TV studio anywhere (else you end up with the closet sized "Studio" 7E WNBC had). I predict something big is planned for 3A next year. And moving Nightly might be part of that too. I also have had this sneaking suspicion that the 4th floor newsroom studio was supposed to be the modern day equivalent of Studio 5HN, the "instant news" studio NBC used to have on the 5th floor right off the newsroom where things like the bulletins about the Kennedy assassination originated. I feel like when we're all done here, that studio will be Brian's new glass bubble and not a "full time" MSNBC studio.
12. I've seen them on other shows pretty regularly. They usually use them as rejoins coming out of the first commercial break of a show.
13. For the first time in over 12 years (last time I saw them was the first few months of the 2004 graphics), WTMJ has talent opens:
14. It's a green screen on some c-stands. They already have the c-stands and I bought a greenscreen off Amazon on Prime Day for $20. The expense is negligible.
15. WGBA in Green Bay, WI has adopted the Scripps graphics package, and in a twist, has adopted the WMAR "InFocus" package for "Wisconsin Tonight" which is apparently sticking around. It works pretty well. They have also rebranded their weather department to "NBC26 Storm Shield Weather"
16. With most MSNBC shows coming out of the new newsroom, and WNBC abandoning 3C, I kinda wonder if we're heading towards a renovation of 3A and 3C that would bring them back to where they were when MSNBC moved into 30 Rock. The new video wall in 3A is nice, but I still feel like it's a temporary measure. It's out of place. The set in 3B is being used for purposes it wasn't built for, and there's a whole bunch of space (the old home base/Nightly News set) that's not used and basically wasted. That's a couple strikes against it. I would think it's days are probably numbered. As for the open, it definitely has some European influence. RTL has a similar concept going on in their open:
17. Because that's where it should be. This thread is for things that don't warrant their own thread. A new set is definitely thread worthy.
18. The studio that they were in from 2008-2012 no longer exists. It was torn out shortly after the move to 3C and the space converted back to newsroom content center space (it was a conference room before they made it a studio). I remember seeing a picture of the former studio space a few years back, and I recall the desk cameras were still mounted between the cubicles. I'd imagine they have removed them by now.
19. WEWS rebrand/logo discussion moved here: https://forums.tvnewstalk.net/index.php?threads/wews-rebrands-with-new-logo.15697
20. Scripps debut a new political show called "The Race" on their stations today that will run through the election. Air times vary wildly with some (like WTMJ) airing it in the early morning while others air it late at night. It's being produced by The Now, but other Scripps properties are contributing to it (like DecodeDC and Newsy) http://www.adweek.com/tvspy/scripps-debuts-national-political-show/177798
21. I had heard around the time it launched that WTMJ's "Now" was/is a experiment that could find its way to other stations that don't have their own "Now", and the ones that do could reformat eventually. Obviously WGBA is a candidate for this since they still have "Wisconsin Tonight", and WMAR has that "In Focus" show that reminds me of Wisconsin Tonight.
22. Because it costs less to produce than it makes on ad revenue, resulting in a profit. I also know WTMJ's Now has had ratings gains ever since it launched. People like it. I know people on here don't like The Now because it's not a "traditional newscast", but calling it a "failure" couldn't be further from the truth.
23. Scripps is touting it's "success" at putting digital/social media first at KNXV (which you may recall included replacing the news director with the station's digital director). http://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/local-tv/scripps-phoenix-station-thinks-digital-overhaul-newsroom-operations/158819 There's no mention of how this affected ratings, but at least they have 50,000 more fans on Facebook...
24. WPIX posted a couple minutes of their 10PM newscast from August 14th, 2003, the day of the 2003 Northeast Blackout, noting that most people couldn't actually watch it as their power was out. Even though there's a very good chance they were running on generator power, you can't even tell that's the case.
