  1. For what little I watched of Greta's show on Fox over the years (an amount that can be measured in minutes), she seemed more like a local TV anchor reporter from a mid-sized market than anything.

  2. Simple: it is a lot more time consuming at the FCC and DOJ to deal with 10 separate applications than for a single large acquisition - each one is a different order and a different process. It's not so much time consuming at Gray as it is at the FCC and DOJ.

Is that why station groups tend to be sold en masse rather than piecemeal? To make it easier for the governmental agencies? That's really weird.

  3. Doing a quick scan of TV markets 10-100 and there are a few possibilities:

--Raleigh/Durham + Fresno: I could see a scenario where ABC cashes out of the region and decides to sell WTVD. (It also gives them a solid #2 in a growing Southeast market.) Same deal with KFSN, except they get a significant market leader.

--Columbus: Word was that the Wolfe family was looking to sell, but as it turns out, that wasn't the case. However, if Scripps gives them a nice offer for WBNS, could they change their minds?

--Oklahoma City/Tulsa: I don't know enough about KOTV/KWTV's ownership situation, but if Griffin were looking to get out of the business, Scripps would make a lot of sense, wouldn't it?

--Providence: WLNE's probably too far gone, but Scripps could probably buy it and give it a WKBW-style revamp.

    Just thinking out loud...

Scripps already owns KJRH in Tulsa, so they wouldn't be able to buy KOTV. (And while they'd be able to buy WBNS, they wouldn't be able to outright purchase WTHR in Indianapolis since they currently own WRTV.)

  4. Unfortunately many ethnic groups find the "W" and "K"s in the FCC call signs to be offensive.

One "K" is only 2 more ""K's" away from KKK.

The letter "W" is considered "code' for White or White people.

I have never heard or read of this reasoning. Can you provide proof?

  5. The FTVLive article has a good idea:

Here's a tip.... Why not just give the Super Bowl crew a mic that is just chroma-key green and all the stations and superimpose their logo on that?

Here's another idea: Have three or four reporters down there to split the work. But, then, we're talking about Nexstar here.

  6. WCVB has finally switched. It's a nice new format, but a lot of legacy content has been wiped out (as was the case with the other switchovers.)

Looks like Lakana's (formerly Internet Broadcasting) is no longer involved in the sites. Has Hearst taken the work in-house?

  7. News 5 makes me think of the news op in Tim & Eric's universe...and I get shudders when I think of that series.

I don't understand the cling to the newsnet5 domain though. They haven't used it on-air for years. WEWS.com redirects right to it and is perfectly fine, and though those calls might be a tongue-twister, it just feels like an artifact of the 'citychannel.com' era of Hearst and McGraw-Hill that we should leave behind (*cough*Nexstar should too already*cough*)

If you think that's bad, WISC still uses channel3000.com and its sister station, WKBT, still uses channel8000.com.

  8. I think there's a better chance of, say, Hearst buying Scripps than ABC buying Scripps or Scripps buying ABC.

On the bright side, if ABC did ever decide to sell all of their stations, at least we know which two companies wouldn't be able to buy them...
