  1. what about CBS, FOX, or NBC affiliates in the top 100 with fewer followers?

are there any ABC (or CBS, NBC, FOX) affiliates where the CW or MNTV affiliate ranks higher than them? $inclair claims KDNL is ranked 5th, below CW affiliate KPLR, it had the Cardinals and Blues games before most of them moved to cable, doesn't have any sports now

WPGH only has 772 followers and WUTV only has 229. Other Sinclair stations with no news departments (both are outsourced to the NBC affiliates in their respective markets).

But WXLV has slightly more, they have 1,516 followers.

Definitely shows the importance in having an internal news department when it comes to have a strong-performing station.

  2. how does KImmel do in STL compared to other places?

If it's like all the other ABC shows, very poorly. All ABC shows perform poorly in STL. KDNL is one of the worst performing affiliates in the country.

But the reason ABC doesn't do anything about it is because Sinclair bundles KDNL's affiliation agreement with ABC with it's better performing affiliates like WSYX, KATU, and KOMO (the affiliation agreement was made prior to them buying the Allbritton stations).

  3. On one hand I'm really surprised Sinclair fired him, he seemed like a perfect fit for Sinclair culturally and clearly had no problem following the company talking points.....on the other hand when you threaten to "ram a hot poker" up a teenagers butt it's really hard to defend that person and keep him employed.

My guess is that Sinclair will just take a "wait and see" approach by not replacing Allman with anything significant and hope that the Tribune merger is approved and KTVI can start producing news for KDNL (or where ever ABC affiliation in St. Louis ends up).

Exactly. His whole program was a right-wing opinion based talk show so obviously Sinclair had no problem with that. But it's hard to defend someone when they threaten a high school student.

But to be fair, I live in St. Louis and I didn't even know he made those comments. His program on KDNL is so low on the radar that if you asked 10 people in St. Louis about his show, 8 wouldn't know it even existed. I wouldn't be surprised if whatever is on KPLR at those times beat KDNL in the ratings. This was another sad excuse for Sinclair to satisfy their news requirements for their affiliation agreement with ABC.

Now Sinclair has to hope that they are able to get KTVI or else they'll have to scramble to come up with another half-ass version of Plan B.

  4. My opinion is that the DMAs should be:

    * Denver counties in SE Wyoming --> Cheyenne

    * Salt Lake counties in SW Wyoming --> Casper (Gray has set precedence there with KGWR)

    * Denver counties in NE Wyoming --> Cheyenne

    * Teton County is OK in Idaho Falls, while the northern counties in Billings are okay there (Sheridan should join them)

    * Crook and Weston are OK in Rapid City

I disagree with you about SW Wyoming. Rock Springs/Green River are much closer to Salt Lake than they are to Cheyenne or Casper. And the Salt Lake stations including all the independent ones have been on cable there for the longest time. The only Casper stations on cable there are KTWO, KGWC (because of KGWR), and KCWC.

    http://www.allwest.com/pages/tv-channels.aspx

The rest of what you said does make sense though. The only reason I can think of as to why the Denver DMA is so spotty in Wyoming and Nebraska is because the Denver stations tend to be the go-to for cable systems in regions in isolated parts of the West that couldn't get a local version of a particular network (because the Denver stations came in via satelite). I could be wrong but that's my educated guess at least. I do know that KUSA was the default NBC affilate in Rapid City for that period in time between KEVN losing the NBC affiliation and KNBN starting up.

  5. Yep! It appears that KGWC will meet the fate of KFXF, KJCT, WAGT, WIFR, KSPR, KXJB, KVTV > KYLX, & WFXS > WZAW, down on their luck full power stations rescued by Gray and converted to low power status in order to avoid possible closure and satisfy FCC regulations.

Although to be fair, KGWC is more deserving of this treatment than any of those other stations you've mentioned. That station was a joke. But then again, so is the Casper TV market as a whole.

For a long time it was basically KTWO and everyone else. Then IMWC decided to bring some competition in but they still weren't able to compete. Now that Gray has taken over, Casper is no-longer a one horse town. Although with this Gray deal, who knows if that will change.

  6. Starting the week of January 24th, 2018, the small DMA #200 market of Ottumwa, Iowa and Kirksville, Mo. will finally have all four major networks when KYOU will launch NBC on subchannel 15.2

This is what the market will have once KYOU has NBC:

KTVO has ABC on 3.1 and CBS on 3.2

KYOU has FOX on 15.1 and will soon have NBC on 15.2

The market has PBS through digital translators from Iowa Public Television.

It even has a CW cable-only affiliate from "KWOT" (The CW Plus)

    http://www.kyoutv.com/home/2018/01/08/kyou-nbc-release/

I imagine that the cable providers will remove KSHB and WGEM on the Missouri side possibly WHO on the Iowa side and replace it with this new channel.

Also worth mentioning that you can only get PBS on the Missouri side via cable which carries KCPT.

The market sure has changed in the past 10 years.

  7. Do that point, is there some common time that the must-runs must be aired? If I were the GM of one of their stations, I'd air it on a digi sub at 3am.

KOMO runs them during their 4:30am newscast.

I'm sure Hunt Valley isn't happy about that though but I do think they have to be at least inserted into the regular newscasts.

  8. I'll be honest, I'm going to really miss KNLC. It's been such a fascinating anachronism since it signed on. No matter when and what I've tuned in over the years, the station seemed like it was at least fifteen years behind the times. Still, Larry Rice always had his heart in the right place (if not his broadcast acumen), and this is $3,750,000 that his ministry can certainly use. Also, Weigel seems a decent owner, so I'm looking forward to what they do with the station.

It's an interesting station that's for sure. As someone who lives in St. Louis, I'm curious to see how they'll revamp Channel 24, because it desperately needs an overhaul.

  9. Are the legacy Fisher and Allbritton ABC affiliates now tied together with KDNL and the other Sinclair ABC affiliates? I'd be surprised if they weren't.

It looks like the last Sinclair ABC affiliation agreement did include the legacy Fishers stations but was done prior to them closing on the Allbritton stations.

    http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/79636/sinclair-renews-multiple-abc-affiliations

Per the article, the remaining affiliation agreements still have some time left. I'm guessing that's including the Allbritton stations in that.

  10. I wouldn't be surprised if Sinclair bundled WNWO with a large chunk of their NBC affiliates in a group-wide affiliation pact. Otherwise NBC would be talking with Gray about moving (back) to a WTVG sub.

That's pretty much the same reason ABC has put up with KDNL this long.

  11. Sinclair gets raked over the coals...

    AGAIN...

    this time by Bloomberg.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2017-07-20/the-sinclair-revolution-will-be-televised-it-ll-just-have-low-production-values

I wonder how many stations keep their supplies locked away in their 2 lock closets.....and what would have happened if David Smith was still distributing pornos...

If he was, that would be the first time a Sinclair newscast would be watchable.

On a serious note, that was a really good article and really shows how they're just money hungry people who will say whatever crap they believe will help make them more money. That said, I'm sure we're going to see another letter from Scott Livingston complaining about how persecuted he feels.

  12. Sinclair is bragging about the "ratings growth" it has made by its must-run Sunday series "Full Measure With Sharyl Attkisson" (and some of the numbers they boast are hilariously bad!):

    http://www.tvnewscheck.com/marketshare/2017/07/11/sinclairs-full-measure-gaining-viewers/

The best one are the WLOS numbers.

There was absolutely no change in the ratings for the 10:30am airing right before This Week. But hey, at least they had 100% growth in ratings for the 12am rerun after Joel Osteen.

  13. Terrorism (in some ways) may not be nonsense, but Boris certainly is. And then some.

It's one thing to keep viewers aware of what's going on in the world with things like ISIS and stuff like that, it's another to create a segment with ominous looking graphics and music to instill fear into your viewers into thinking that Trump is the only one that can protect them.

And as Oliver pointed out, the fact that they use stories about the burka ban in France which has absolutely nothing to do with terrorism just shows how the segment is supposed to just be that "Muslims are scary".

That said, seems like Sinclair stations will be seeing more of him as they have increased the number of must run segments from 3 to 9. I'm sure the fact his Administration is plunging deeper into a crisis as this decision was made is a complete coincidence. That said, it doesn't seem wise to add segments from someone who is Russian as the Administration you're backing is involved in a controversy over how close its ties to Russia are.

  14. Apparently WPLG aired blurred footage of an alligator eating the body of a missing student pilot in the Everglades. The studen took off on an unaccompanied flight on Sunday and the wreckage was found Wednesday. That was when the WPLG bird got the footage.

Seems to be in extremely poor taste.

Do the stations in Miami still share helicopters (save for WSVN)?

Miami news in general is poor taste. WSVN is one of (if not) the highest rated English-language stations in Miami so all the other stations try to be like them with the sensationalism and the "if it bleeds, it leads" approach.

Wish I knew some Spanish because I'd rather watch WLTV or WSCV for news if I could.

  15. The graphics are the same but the set is completely different from WEVV, as WEHT/WTVW have the Nexstar set.

Honestly, they should've waited a another year or two to change the branding, music, graphics, set, etc.. since it only premiered about a year ago.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but I was able to find some videos of the opens for KLAF and KADN.

And yes, they look really really cheap.

  16. If they did it would be news department #5 (#6 if you count Bay News 9 and #7 if you count WWSB), so it probably would not be successful. I thought that it could have been spectrum auction bait but Hearst decided not to sell its spectrum, which I was very surprised about.

It's one of the highest rated independent stations in the country so it's basically a cash cow that Hearst can run at little to no cost.
