  1. The earliest instance of “Good evening, friends” found thus far.

1976, massive truck accident involving 7500 gallons of ammonia. It got reuploaded earlier in the month, but this case, you hear Dave teasing the “film stories” with Move Closer playing.

  2. WBIR's "Live at Five at Four". Weird.

Weird indeed. But there’s a story there.

Prior to September 15' date=' 2008, this show was aired at 5 p.m. on weekdays under the title LIVE at Five. The program focused on community events and celebrity interviews. In 2008, the show was moved to 4 p.m. and was temporarily renamed LIVE at Five at Four with WBIR asking for viewers' opinions on a new name. The quirky temporary name, however, was embraced by viewers and LIVE at Five at Four has remained the brand for the 4 p.m. program.[/quote']

  3. How many journalist families are there in the country? I’m only aware of the Ogles in OKC, the Ponce brothers and father in Chicago, and the Magers brothers (both retired).

The Hambricks, as well; Farmer Sr. and Jr. at WSB; and the Warmoths here (dad on WFTV, son on WKMG)

  4. Everybody knows Space Station HBO. It’s one of those sequences that really needs no introduction. Even the network itself has it on their YouTube page.

Then in 1999, as stop motion animation was seen as dated (with the exception of “Chicken Run”), a new sequence emerged. From the theater to the small town, the tundra, the desert, and back into the city, it’s won over its share of viewers too.

Then came 2011. Things got muted. Extravagance was dulled in favor of

    and
    . Until last year.

With the introduction of the “HBO in Focus” motif (see any one of their current promos), a new Feature Presentation sequence was created, with a couple notable callbacks, and that classic 12-note signature as loud and proud as ever.

  5. New from Radioman:

October 1990: The Briarcliff Mansion (otherwise known as WAGA) puts on a new news set for Eyewitness News. While the opening was clipped, everything to the close - in all its early 90’s sluttiness - is there.

New Years Eve 1993: The last of John Pruitt on 11Alive (it was that weird period when the Alive was out). Note he didn’t say retirement - he said resignation. The exact phrase: “The day will come when

    ”.

  6. Also, WCPX "6 Believes in You" is another one that Ed Peters told me about some years back. It was in use concurrent with "Determination"; it wasn't used as a news intro, but it was used as a news closing. There has been a 1985 close on YouTube for a while (right now there's a full 1985 newscast), with an instrumental-with-vocal-tag "6 Believes in You" as part of one of those "local people on camera" closings (I wonder, was this a concept originated by Peters? Or was it a Magid thing? It obviously outlasted Peters at WXIA, all the way until their complete station image refresh around the fall of 1993.)

    (30:55 for the close)
