  1. Did you know that ABC's Chicago bureau on WNT (at least the first version) had more than we originally saw on television then? Here's a shot of an ABC News promo from 1980 talking about what ABC News had on then (this was on a recently-posted clip of the evening edition of WAKR Channel 23 when that was the ABC station of Akron/Canton, OH; it is now WVPX, and is the Ion Television O&O there); you'll see that, like the Washington bureau, there was a second header that had "ABC News Chicago" (in addition to the first one above the national map that we saw behind Max); you can see part of that second header in the top left of this screencap.
  2. WDAY Channel 6 (ABC Fargo, ND): 1999 morning edition (First News); loved how the opening used the sunrise motif to indicate "morning edition"
  3. ABC WNT, Thurs. June 14, 1979, w/Max Robinson in Washington, and Peter Jennings, Barbara Walters and Frank Reynolds in Vienna (Frank is in a studio in Vienna that I don't think we've ever seen before)...
  4. That's quite the creative Eyewitness News title, especially for the NBC station of Lubbock (I think that's what KCBD was then, and still is now)-- the 1s of the channel number, separated by a large diagonal bar, forming a sort of N design (and thereby making the title Eyewitness 11ews, as quoted in the caption on the post).
  5. 1997 WKMG Channel 6 (CBS Orlando, FL) talent billing bump "You're watching WKMG 6 News, working harder for you... with David Wittman...Leslye Gale...Pamela Brady's weather...and Gordie Hershiser on sports."
  6. Here's a really neat WJZ 1992 Eyewitness News opening I just saw; might be of particular interest to the ID Junkie for an update to the WJZ package.
  7. WTRF Channel 7 (CBS Wheeling, WV), 6/21/85, partial broadcast (opening uses CBS Evening News music of the time; title at the time on WTRF was The News)
  8. "This man has worked a long, hard day and he's got a lot of money to show for it-- other people's money. He's a pickpocket-- his take: $700. It's dangerous to carry cash. Carry American Express Travelers Cheques. If they're lost or stolen you can get them back. Your vacation is protected. American Express Travelers Cheques-- don't leave home without them." --The late, great Karl Malden, in one of his various commercials for American Express Travelers' Cheques, said commercials indelibly identifying him with that credit card brand (this one from 1975)
  9. And the billing is a huge part of it, IMO: "From the Eastern Shore to the Outer Banks, and all of Hampton Roads... Jane Gardner, Gene Kapp, Dr. Duane Harding with Doppler weather, and Bob Rathbun on sports. This is WTKR-TV's News 3 at 11."
  10. I think LMAD on CBS w/Wayne Brady has lasted as long as it has because it has been a proven brand in the industry (and we can give much credit to the late, great Monty Hall for building that brand into a household name).
  11. More from KCNC: this 1982 weekend 10 P.M. late edition of NewsCenter 4 (Sunday, May 30, 1982) when Channel 4 in Denver was KOA (Bill Stuart, Steve Anderson with weather, and Davis deMontluzin on sports)
  12. Of what affiliation was KDUH at the time of this noon edition in '84?
  13. You bet-- even Ernie dadgum Anderson could put more life into Eyewitness News on WABC in NYC, and KABC in L.A., among others! This 1991 KABC Eyewitness News opening proves why Ernie was the gold standard:
  14. Just checked the table of contents on that package, and indeed you did-- hadn't been paying attention.
  15. WTVD 11 News Nightwatch late edition, for Wed. May 13, 1992 (has Miriam Thomas and the late Larry Stogner on news, Mike Caplan w/Accu-Weather, and Drew Smith on sports; opening here is something that The ID Junkie could possibly use for a WTVD opens revision)
  16. Jill Franco Miller (formerly of WCBD Channel 2 in Charleston) has passed on at 66 (just heard about it a few minutes ago). Obit: https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/charleston/obituary.aspx?n=jill-franco-miller&pid=196220663&fhid=6307 And the evening edition of what was then TV-2 Eyewitness News, for Friday, June 13, 1986 (Jill was only 32 here):
  17. Also in memory of Phyllis, here's the Week 2 1981 edition of The NFL Today on CBS: And also football-related, here are two vintage editions of an NFL highlight show from 1954 on the old DuMont network called Time For Football, w/Jim Leaming:
  18. Two days before Ralph's 29th birthday!
  19. WRC Washington, D.C.: 1980s promo campaign for NewsCenter 4 (the caption says it's from 1980, but I think this was really 1981 or '82), "We Can't Wait to Show You" (four separate promos: first a general one [for all editions], then 5:30 [early prime], 6 P.M. [evening edition, full-hour, 6-7], and 11 P.M. [late edition];) I think WRC really sold their product (at the time) remarkably well.
  20. From btm0815ma: the Mon. Nov. 2, 1981 broadcast of WNT on ABC, wherein the announcer at the top bills Frank Reynolds as being in the then-new Washington newsroom for ABC, and at the bottom, Frank shows off some more of that then-new studio (he wouldn't have long to enjoy it, though, passing on in 1983 at 59)...
  21. Two more of my favorite sets from then, both from ABC News on WNT-- the then-new Washington bureau w/the late Frank Reynolds (here seen on its debut broadcast, Mon. Nov. 2, 1981), and the Chicago bureau w/Max Robinson (one version that started in 1981, from the broadcast of May 23, 1983; and the other from the broadcast of July 13, 1983); also includes a shot of Ted Koppel in Washington on Nightline from 1986...
  22. Owing to being later in the 80s, perhaps?
  23. Do you think the Sports versions (college football, NFL Today) are more colorful?
  24. And I really liked that one and the one for Today on NBC then (and BTW, I just now edited my original post to reflect the CBS Morning News usage).
  25. The one I just posted, from CBS Sports?
