  1. I think the new stations are dropping the reference for USA Today now the companies are being split apart. Which makes me wonder what's going to happen with the local websites? They are all moving over to presto and what about stations like KPNX which are integrated closely with their newspapers? I think stations should buy those combo pedestal units from Vinten Radamec that can be robotically operated and manually operated. Oddly enough here in at WBFF in Baltimore they have no robotic cameras or even PTZ heads. Their cameras are are mounted on cheap Vinten tripods with wheels: https://twitter.com/tomrodgersnews/status/491915676697636864 You may need refresh to see the above tweet. But I never got fondness or attachment to news music maybe it's because I just want the broadcast to start.
  2. That is most likely their meeting the FCC requirements mandating that the station identify itself and the city of license either visually or aurorally at the top of the hour or as close to it. Most stations use small 10 pt text that is automatically inserted with out human intervention. Other stations like WTAE's sister insist going this route: The only time that huge logo appears is during newscasts because their opening include the required text: [yt]7tAA9J2lpvE[/yt] Most stations include it in their newscast opens and even on promos for the newscast and or syndicated fair just to be safe.
  3. Did it already air in St. Louis? I wonder if it's meant to be broadcast on all stations. The only reason why I could think it would occur from Baltimore is because they could be cheap and didn't want to fly representatives from the NAACP HQ, if they were involved at all. But they still could of used an insert studio. Update: It appears it was a national town hall that occurred at 7PM EDT. None of the the stations here in Baltimore carried it.
  4. I have to side with David Smith thought he bought a farm without any leases (I think a realtor could get in trouble because the contract stated that there were no leases). Subsequently offered to buy out the lease in full and the value of the lossed crop. In March 2013 Smith tried to terminate the lease because the farmer violated some terms pertaining to erosion. State law requires six months notice by the landlord prior to the termination of a lease and requires soil conservation to prevent erosion. After this issue occurred the farmer broke down a fence and locked the gate preventing Smith from accessing rest of the property and proceeded to replant his crop. I am not sympathetic one bit to the farmer because he has had run ins with the law before. The farmer performed an illegal burn on leased land which caused a big enough fire and smoke for the fire department to be called. The farmers prohibited the fire fighters from extinguishing the fire. Police officers were called in and he would not listen to their orders. Consequently he was charged with failure to obey a reasonable police order and obstructing fire fighters - his charges were dismissed. Then a few years ago the farmer threatened a woman who was riding her horses alongside but not on his leased land. While he was threatening the woman he spooked another horse which bolted causing a 73 year old man to fall off. After the event transpired he went to the woman's house kicked her dog and shoved her while cursing at her in front of her children. The woman subsequently had a peace order taken out against him.
  5. But how are The List, Right This Minute and maybe The Now any different from each other? I still can't believe that there are so many viral video out there to drive two and a half hours a day of original programming. But Scripps clearly wants to go the cheap route by using videos posted to YouTube by claiming fair use.
  6. I just looked up how to get tickets to The Chew and appears they tape two shows on Tuedays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 AM. As for ABC time zone differences I believe they are the only network that does not offer a specific central time feed. I believe they expect the stations to tape delay their morning and day part programming. According to people that look for satellite wild feeds using a professional grade satellite receiver and a big ugly dish they only provide feeds for East, West and Mountain. It appears that CBS and Fox only offer East and West coast feeds while NBC provides the feeds for East, Central, Mountain and West.
  7. Looks like WPBF got it's set refreshed in the past year. Around 1:31 they have a desk around their "tree" the backgrounds appear updated. [yt]t40jVeP5XHs[/yt] A live desk stand up location. [yt]hHzZKAebYqY[/yt] Their home base also appeared to be updated.
  8. At least the Chew isn't a live show. But what's stopping them from airing it at 1PM?
  9. I was watching WBFF's weather forecast and they showed the radar with how heavy the rain is. Now normally television stations show a range of colors of how light - heavy the rain or precipitation is expected to be (WMAR and WJZ always show the key, WBAL only shows it if theirs a hurricane or snow). But today I noticed WBFF did something completely different they only showed five colors signifying how heavy the rain is supposed to be. Normally I don't notice the key because I know what the colors mean and how to interpret that map but I must say I found WBFF's approach refreshing which made the map much easier to read. I also imagine the colors are much easier if to determine how heavy the precipitation is falling if you are color blind. Now I must say if you want the simplest map to read you should watch BBC Weathers forecast where precipitation is blue where the heavier the precipitation is expected the darker the blue is.
  10. He stays neutral which is difficult being at Sinclair which used him to record robocalls and political polling. Because of his position he has more likely required to do the recordings rather than him going out and doing it on his own (I don't believe a reporter that has ethical standards would volunteer to do robocalls or polling). Most political polls are written in a way that is to be considered neutral so it does not sway the response but some of the questions seemed to be one sided.
  11. I've never seen one of their "Town Halls" locally despite being from Baltimore. If I recall didn't Mark Hyman moderate political debates for them? Here only their primetime anchors moderate debates it's sometimes Jeff Barnd but usually Melissa Gilbert. I do think some democrat politicians may object to Jeff Barnd hosting because Sinclair used him for political robocalls or political polling for republican causes (several of the questions had negative connotations.) I'm surprised they haven't done it before. I know NBC affiliate agreements make them air a newscast before Today, Nightly News, and their late night hours. I was looking at WJLA's ABC affiliation agreement requires them to air a minimum of a half hour before Good Morning America, ABC World News and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
  12. Im going to to further to as as long as the twitter logo never appears in a chyron I will be just fine. If you must put out a reporters or the stations twitter handle just do @rkolsen. There is a reason chyrons are designed for text only. I know this is the Sinclair thread but I look at other Hearst Stations (WBAL seems to be the lone exception), NBC's Look F, the CBS and Fox packages all look much better without the damn bird. Hell even WJZ's jerry rigged graphics look much better with out the twitter icon. A lot of those stations have a dark blue but let's keep the Twitter blue on for Easter eggs. I must be having a stroke I complimented WJZ graphics. OK time to think F.A.S.T. F for face - okay A for arm weakness - okay S for speech - okay T for time - got plenty of it. Back to my point the people that would follows your page would follow you anyway if you were any good.
  13. I'm curious are you watching on an old CRT? If so I think you may be out of luck, if your viewing it with out a cable or digital converter box because of the overscan. The whole point of them using a 16:9 layout is so they don't have to worry about the safe areas. Ideally the station should identify & update the auto format description for each program (and check it frequently). The benefit of active format description is so that if you are viewing the station in a wide screen but viewing a standard definition feed is that if the content is letter boxed it should automatically "zoom in" on the letterbox feed. Now granite it's not going to be HD quality but it will fill your screen. I remember reading an NBC document on it when they were starting to letter box content and one thing they said is that while the network may be sending a signal to go full 16:9 or letterbox a lot of television station encoders may not get the message and transmit it out to the viewers. Another issue is that the cable company may not be equipped to pass through a signal.
  14. I full heartedly agree. If you break up (and you live together) in a new city you would essentially be screwed with no where to turn to and no one to go to if you need help as chances are all of your friends in KC are his friends.
  15. WBAL upped Kai Reed to weekend evening anchor, nothing was official until I saw a promo for next weeks Ravens/Redskins game and says stay tuned to after the game with anchor Kai Reed. Her bio was changed on 8/14 saying will report for the weekday 10pm and 11pm news. Coincidentally Deborah Weiner was moved from weekend evening anchor to weekend mornings on Saturdays from 5-7am, 9-10am and on Sundays from 5-8am and 9-10am. Her bio was updated on the same day as Kai's. However I do not know whether she'll replace Jennifer Franciotti or Lisa Robertson weekend mornings. Jennifer Franciotti was in with Deborah this morning. Neither Jennifer or Lisa's biographies have been updated. I think they will both continue reporting on weekdays but after I heard the change it appears they are now alternating each weekend.
  16. With their attempts at hubbing things in the past I wouldn't be surprised if there was an intern up in Hunt Valley that has permission to see the rundowns at each station who has the keys to the metaphorical car. Keeping on the hubbing trend it could be used to streamline graphics so the artist picks the best example and makes the graphic. Another option is that they use a social media manager or a program that takes in all the various feeds and the hashtags. So for each hashtag #LiveOnFox45 would have their own column of responses. As for the #LiveOnFox45 they must if switched over because last week they were encouraging use of #FoxBaltimore or #Fox45QoD (Question of the day).
  17. The dots on the bottom is most likely overscan. Normally they appear at the top of the frame but can show up on the bottom. Most HDTVs will automatically display the full frame, which frequently is 1920x1088 rather than 1920x1080 but I am not sure the resolution for 720p. You can fix the problem by zooming in the picture using the button (usually the button says P.Size/Picture Size/ or HD Zoom) that will resize the image so it's not visible. Here's some additional information from Engadget and how to fix it. Frequently overscan is used to transmit additional data like the current program that is airing, an electronic program guide and it's what enables v-chip to be transmitted.
  18. Exactly and it's not unlike WRC sister affiliates WBAL and WAVY don't have helicopters in the sky. Chances are if there is breaking news in Prince George's or Montgomery Counties in MD that warrants aerial footage for WRC both WBAL and WJZ's news helicopters would be there. WBAL and WJZ I know put them up in either NBC Newschannel or CBS Newspath/Network News Service, respectively, and if it's major feed it to CNN Newsource. Plus WRC has several tower cams in strategic locations around the DMA.
  19. I found a map from the FAA that shows the prohibited airspace wishin the region. That innermost circle is prohibited airspace which means only police, military and MEDEVAC helicopters can fly. The outer ring requires a flight plan and tower control.
  20. I believe WJLA was the lone hold out for the local news service in Washington, DC there is a twitter user that works for them that says he's the only reporter covering the DMV from the sky. Normally local news services prohibit reporters or pilots from commenting on air for the stations leaving the people on the ground to cover/narrate what the pilot is saying to each news desk. Plus I couldn't find any articles linking WJLA to the local news service that WRC, WTTG and WUSA use. I believe there was a Washington Post article that had a quote from the former ND or GM that said they would rather go on their own in 2009 or 2010. I do think WRC may pull out of it at some point given that other stations since WNBC, WMAQ, KNBC and KXAS all got their birds back although they do share the feed with their Telemundo counterparts. I personally think that having a dedicated helicopter for each station in Washington, DC is a waste of money considering they are prohibited from flying over within 17 miles radius of Reagan Airport on the Potomac. That radius encompasses all of Washington DC, a good chunk of suburban Virginia coming a few miles past the DC/MD border. After that portion prohibited airspace the rest of their DMA is restricted requiring constant contact and a flight plan. Simply because these restrictions they cannot cover the most densely (and where the most news occurs) occupied part of the DMA.
  21. I also wonder how long will it be until Sinclair starts using WJLA's helicopter up here in Baltimore. The distance from DC to Baltimore is about a 40 minute drive and WJLA's bird has been overhead for their coverage if the breaking news is big enough.
  22. I'm watching WBFF's 11PM rerun right now and find it interesting that the rerun does not include the opens or transitional elements that are featured in the main broadcast. Also worth noting that it appears the live bug is burnt into the recording and that rerun does not include their logo. They still are using the old graphics, I still find it odd that the flagship hasn't switched over yet. But they did launch a new HD SkyCam in Towson which I would say is significant because no other affiliate has cameras outside of the downtown area of the city. Towson is probably 20 miles from the inner harbor and has a big mall with a large "Luxury wing" where all the high end store has shops. Towson also has a few colleges where the largest university that has 22,0000 students and has a strong downtown area that is being revitalized.
  23. I remember the old baron systems did that - hell WJZ's does (it looks like they up convert their radar to HD despite running Accuweather). As for the power of the radar it is most likely the ERP which takes into account of the gains of the antenna. Wikipedia uses an example that a 100kW radio station would typically only use 10-20kW of power.
  24. My biggest complaint with the animation was that one beam appeared to be gaining speed on the other one and that there was no set interval. So it's exactly as I thought. This makes me wonder of this new technology called CASA radars which are being studied by MIT are in operation in Northern Texas and Oklahoma. The radar system uses several low powered radars spaced maybe 50 miles apart which they can selectively point an individual radome to focus on a small section of the storm so instead of having it spin 360° it pivot 90°. It makes me wonder if there are any tv stations in the country looking to deploy this method.
  25. Is it just me or their studio in a bathroom - it has a bit of an echo. Also they were truly creative with their radar name Max Storm - I take it that if WSI named their product Weather A (as in the source input) that's what they would have branded it as.
