  1. I haven't used iNews and Overdrive together, but I would gather that, assuming Overdrive didn't also fail, Overdrive still needs access to the rundowns, video, and whatnot through iNews/ENPS. On top of that, it would be somewhat difficult for the producer to be able to know what's going on and how to time the show without it. Also, it's stupid to think that one station will be the ratings leader forever. Nothing in this life is forever. And WPVI, despite what many people think, isn't necessarily the untouchable station that it's made out to be. They've had success and will probably continue to be successful for many years to come, but nothing is forever. Plenty of stations once believed to be on the same level have faltered before.
  2. That's a really pretty newsroom. A lot of thought must have gone into that. Even the assignment desk matches the anchor desks.
  3. Glad to see they got rid of that 'public bathroom tile' look.
  4. You're telling me that your news director, in a market #4 newsroom, has to approve of all stringer tape purchases? That's either one really inefficient newsroom with a power tripping news director, or something else doesn't add up here. And you're telling me that an assignment editor of 30 years can't explain the process for booking satellite time? Or that an assignment editor of 30 years thinks that anchors having egos is a "scoop?" Some people here actually do work in newsrooms and can see through this.
  5. What about stringer tape? What's the current process/policy for it over there? How much, how often, and who approves?
  6. I'm curious — how does booking satellite time work at NBC O&Os? How many ENG trucks does WCAU have?
  7. I ran across some footage of KEZI in Eugene, which seems to use a bootleg cross between the KTLA look and the old KYW look. And it doesn't look that bad, really...
  8. Kristine Johnson has been filling in on CBS This Morning and also apparently has popped up on CBSN a few times. Is she gearing up for a move to national?
  9. If you've never seen The Now, you can take a look at some of the content that Newsy has. It's some division of Scripps that produces packages about national news (or "trends") with content scraped from social media. I don't really get what it is or whether Scripps is trying to make it a site that stands on its own to compete with a lot of the other new media outlets, but a lot of Newsy packages are fed into The Now (or at least that's true for the KMGH version). As for Denver, I don't really mind The Now all that much, as their only competition is KUSA, which is also pretty silly at that hour. KMGH's old 4pm format from a few years ago that was single-anchored by Anne Trujillo with a lot of hard news and a smidge of topical viewer email responses (much like what Jack Cafferty used to do) was my favorite.
  10. Keba Arnold moves from KXTV to anchor the new 4pm news on KTVU and 7pm news on KICU: http://www.adweek.com/tvspy/ktvu-adds-sacramento-anchor/147950
  11. I remember she used to do those social media/opinion-y type things from that silly "Interactive Help Center." It seemed like she was on everyday in the mornings or during that brief period when they brought 4pm news back, though I can't remember the last time I saw her on air. Given that KCNC has shifted direction a little bit in the last few years to more hard news, I could see where maybe she wouldn't be in favor here anymore. Anyway, some news from KTVU: Tori Campbell to leave in June to spend more time with family. Gasia Mikaelian will replace her on Mornings on 2 (and presumably the noon news as well). http://wn.ktvu.com/Clip/11344408/ktvus-gasia-mikaelian-to-join-mornings-on-2#.VR35yq73VOY.facebook No word yet on what will happen to the 5pm and 7pm, though my guess is they put Julie back on the 5pm and leave the 7pm to be a rotation of Heather Holmes, Ken Pritchett, or Eric Rasmussen.
  12. Ah yes, I should correct myself. KCNC did it in the past but stopped doing it when the Wordpress sites debuted as well.
  13. KCNC, another CBS O&O that never streamed, is now streaming their newscasts as well.
  14. Hm, so he was news director at KDVR in 2006. KDVR was actually fine until 2008/2009 when Dennis Leonard took over the news director position, which was when they were also merging with KWGN. That was a truly awful era. But before that, KDVR was very watchable and a decent product aside from the Tom Martino reports occasionally popping up and all the American Idol hype at the time, but that was just Fox anyway. I guess I'm glad they at least found someone local.
  15. I think it's fine. It probably is change for the sake of change, and the previous design was better, but this isn't awful. Plus, the format of the show is still the same, which is what counts more than a minor graphics update. If you want to see really terrible graphics, you can always flip over to ABC.
  16. I don't know if this is just new to me, but here is what sounds like the (mostly) full CBS This Morning theme in pretty high quality. It's worth a listen:
  17. That's exactly how I feel about ABC. There's really no point in bothering with ABC News unless if you're one of those people who watch the news for all the wrong reasons.
  18. As was stated, the ticker is still there. The rundown, lower third, and bug now slide up when they use the ticker instead of having a blank space at the bottom for it. KUSA just happened to not be using a ticker in that shot.
  19. KUSA has been using these updated lower thirds. I think they debuted this week, though I don't watch every newscast in town everyday like my former crazed self, so I can't be sure when. Everything also slides up a line when they turn on the ticker beneath the rundown. There's also a little bit of animation to that new blue stroke in the bug. I like that they take up less space, though since none of the other graphics were updated, these lower thirds are misaligned with everything else, which can look messy, especially in the double boxes. Has any other Gannett station adopted these? If not, this is probably the first time KUSA has gotten anything new graphics-wise before any other station.
  20. KCNC night side reporter Valerie Castro is jumping to WCBS: https://twitter.com/valcbs4/status/543171561885143040
  21. On the (perhaps only) upside of using half of a studio, there's some nice depth of field in that main anchor shot.
  22. According to the schedules, here's KMGH's lineup starting Sept 8: 4:30 7News Now 7:00 GMA 9:00 Meredith Vieira 10:00 The View 11:00 7News at 11 11:30 Right This Minute 12:00 The Chew 1:00 General Hospital 2:00 Let's Ask America 2:30 Inside Edition 3:00 Dr Oz 4:00 The Now 5:00 7News at 5 5:30 World News 6:00 7News Right Now (It's unknown what difference the 'Right Now' will have on the news ) 6:30 The List So 7News at 11 is shortened to 30 minutes to make room for Right This Minute, and Jeopardy and Wheel move to KDVR at the same times to make for the return of 6pm news and the debut of The List. (I'm not sure where Millionaire is going, but I would guess KTVD.) Seems like a pretty dumb strategy to me. I guess I can understand why they would cut back on the midday show, as it had to be one of the fluffiest hours of Denver television and always had been, but it's still a shame to see a reduction in local programming in favor of national stuff. Now that I've had a chance to watch The Now a few times, it seems like a pretty silly attempt to make things trendy and put on all that "take a look at this video that's gone viral online" junk. It's nothing like KMGH's 4pm news of a few years ago, which was one of the better hard newscasts in recent memory. I don't know what The List is all about, but looking at their website, it looks dumb too. Maybe the 6pm news will do well, but I doubt this lineup will pull greater numbers than what Jeopardy and Wheel do. I'm really not sold on this Scripps strategy.
  23. It seems like KUSA is always the last to get everything. Gannett seems to like trying new graphics/websites out on the podunk stations and sorting out all the bugs before it makes it back to the flagship.
  24. I liked Evrod. I really wish KCNC could hold onto some decent talent for a while. It seems like for the last few years, they've continuously hired some promising young reporters, only to see them leave for other markets. Dominic Garcia left for KFMB, Ty Brennan left for KSAZ, and Michelle Griego left for KPIX, among others. I wouldn't say that other stations in town have this problem.
  25. That's not surprising about Deborah and Jeremy taking over for Ron and Libby, though I wonder who will do the 10pm news with Hema Mullur and who will do the 7pm news on KWGN. I suppose Hema is an obvious fit, and maybe they'll move Boris Sanchez to weekdays?
