  1. Bill Hamilton may be too old to be a voiceover guy, but in his day he sounded pretty good. Here is a clip from KDKA. Bill was the morning guy on WBNS Radio for many years, but for some reason you didn't hear his voice much in his home town. You heard his voice quite a bit in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huOmvNU2tOw#t=42 (at 0:42) Bill Hamilton samples: http://www.luxury2brcondo.com/
  2. There are so many hours in a day. I doubt that "The Extraordinary Richard Malmos" (that's what his website says) would be able to keep up with all the stations Sinclair owns, his acting career, MeTV, commerical work and whatever else he does. Besides, if I was "The Extraordinary Richard Malmos" I would want to make sure I kept all of my other work just in case Sinclair one day decides that I'm not quite so extraordinary anymore. I like Malmos, but I personally miss the late Brian James. As a radio guy, Brian James was probably the best VO announcer since Ernie Anderson. Although James mostly did radio, he once did voiceovers for WBNS-TV. He didn't sound so great as a TV guy so they went back to Jeff Laurence in short order.
  3. And what do all those stations have in common? Ashville (WLOS) is 54 miles from Greenville; Charleston (WCHS) is 52 miles from Huntington; and Pensacola (WEAR) is 58 miles from Mobile. It seems as though you can very easily dominate your portion of these split markets where you can just focus on your part of the market. This is a great little nugget of knowledge that never occurred to me before.
  4. WOW! 925 kw and a HAAT of 1210 meters. Full power in Puerto Rico? http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/contourplot.kml?gmap=2&appid=1421706&call=WKAQ-TV&freq=0.0&contour=41&city=SAN_JUAN&state=PR.kml
  5. Is he related to Mike Bettes of the Weather Channel (ex-WSYX)?
  6. I believe he is the son of legendary (around here) WBNS-TV GM Gene D'Angelo and brother of actress Beverly D'Angelo. Gene D'Angelo was at WTVN radio in the 1960's before WBNS hired him so this is kind of like history repeating itself maybe? P.S. Whatever happened to John Quigley (the first GM at WTTE) EDIT: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2013/03/05/priscilla-dangelo-obit-selfless-wife-mother-a-great-lady.html
  7. I wonder if they can start using drones to do this kind of stuff. I found a cheap dash cam that records at 1080i and installed it just for fun. It ain't bad.
  8. http://www.airplanemanager.com/FlightCalculator.aspx It's rougly 35 minutes by helicopter between the Columbus and Dayton airports (roughly 70 miles). I wonder if they thought of doing the same thing. Would make sense to me to share.
  9. If the Journ"O"List can collude to present only news favorable to Obama, why shouldn't they? Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
  10. And they did mention in the second article that one of the best broadcasters of all time, Mike Wallace, used to hawk Phillip Morris cigarettes. Also remember, back in the old days the sponsors appeared right on the news desk. Back in the old days the WBNS news was the "Ohio Gas" news and the legendary Jimmy Crum used to hawk Blatz beer on TV. Here's Jimmy right in front of the sports wall: http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/07/8b/4a/078b4a0d326ef0da50b0f55a8f95b227.jpg They have to make money, so I don't have a problem with it so long as they keep the commercial time reasonable.
  11. It doesn't really bother me to have them sell studio sponsorships or even to have segments sponsored by one company or another. The facade that a news operation is completely unbiased has gone out the window with the internet. What most people suspected is now painfully obvious: The news, to a certain extent, has always been bought and paid for. It's just more obvious now.
  12. They should have had the street name changed to Sinclair Place. (Or maybe Sinclair/Cunningham/Manhan/Deerfield Place -- LOL.) It's a cul-de-sac and they are the only ones on it. I'm not even sure it's a dedicated road. It might be a private street. WTVN Radio does that on occasion, so it wouldn't be unique in this market. From the Viagra/Lion's Den Adult Bookstore Studios ...... this is ABC 6 News ... On your side.
  13. Their address is 2245? LOL. How did the old WBDT building get that address?
  14. Nice ....... but the juvenile delinquent in me wants to vandalize it as I'm walking by.
  15. A little premature aren't you guys? Doesn't he have a wife? Kids? Nephews? What makes you so sure they are going to sell? If you compare some of the prices TV stations sell for these days to top of the market prices in the 1980's, the prices look pretty much the same to me. Why would you sell when you can just keep generating cash to put in your pockets? Wall Street forces sales because they want commissions and fees. Private owners are under no such pressure. They can own as many or as few TV stations as they want to own.
  16. Next stop: Omaha, maybe?
  17. Fasting Chart Fasting Across Religions Do all religions have fasting days? Use this chart to see which faiths have fasting or an equivalent. http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/2001/02/Fasting-Chart.aspx#
  18. Uggh! He's probably not going to be coming back. Pancreatic cancer is the worst.
  19. Are children actually stupid enough to watch the drivel that qualifies as cartoons these days? The cartoons of my youth, Underdog, Yogi Bear, Jetsons, Bugs Bunny, etc. were far more entertaining than the crap you see today. Everything was done better back in the old days, from the story line to the humor to the music!
  20. I know for a fact that most of their talent here is lefty, but I think the Sinclair people are smart broadcasters and they will put on whoever will get ratings for them. They want to sell time and get cable fees. At the end of the day, they care most about making money. I will say one thing about them. When they debuted "Sky 6" most recently, I thought it was just a prop. About 20 years ago (pre-Sinclair), Channel 6 once covered a helicopter with Sky 6 graphics, filmed a bunch of promos, and quickly stoped using it, but still used the promos to make it look like they had a chopper. That's why I was suspicious. Much to my surprise, this wasn't a publicity stunt and they are actually using it. Since some of WSYX reporters' stories also air on WTVN-Radio, I've heard "reporting from Sky 6, this is _______" in the outcues. This is just a wild guess, but are they able to do this now because of those LiveU packs and the fact that they don't have to outfit a chopper with special gear?? Can those packs even be used from a helicopter? I'm going to repeat what I said before, this is a good example of one of the advantages of a duopoly. Because they can sell more time, they can put more money into the product.
  21. Here we go again. Just because the editorial page of a newspaper swings one way or another doesn't mean the newsgathering and reporting also swings that way. Have you ever watched a Sinclair newscast? It is just about like any other newscast. Actually, depending on the market, it might even be a cut above most other newscasts. And I question how "liberal" Youngstown is. Seattle is liberal. Madison, WI is liberal. Portland is liberal. They would never vote for Reagan. Youngstown is an ethnic Democrat enclave like many Great Lakes cities. Youngstown may be Democrat, but they are not liberal. They would vote for Reagan. That said, Youngstown is lucky to have WFMJ rather than one of the chain owners. Nothing beats locally owned or being part of a small chain of two or three stations, IMO.
  22. Marine 2? Clipper 2? River 2?
  23. Don't make this sound so nefarious! I'm sure he got financing and paid fair market value for the statiions. But my, how far the mighty have fallen. Corporate bankruptcy is one thing, but personal bankruptcy too?
  24. I don't know what to say about this. People who were involved in television during the golden age were real characters. On a nostalgia site, former station employees tell the story about how one local sportscaster would signal one of his groupies he was coming over after the 11 pm news by clicking his pen on TV during the sportscast. One evening, the anchorman grabbed the pen from him before he could signal his date over the air. The local weathercaster was known for occasionally bringing bimbos on the air to do the weather with him. Those days were fun and television was interesting to watch. It was a lot like radio used to be. It's now corporate and that's why broadcasting is about as interesting as walking into a Sears store. Walking on her hands sounds goofy, but at least she showed some personality. This one's kind of amusing too: http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/watch-providence-reporter-demonstrates-what-to-do-when-you-see-a-bear_b97225
  25. Swoboda - Polish for ‘freedom’, a technical term in the feudal system for a freeman, i.e. a peasant farmer as opposed to a serf. Also svoboda and sloboda in other Slavic languages!
