  1. The numbers 3 and 8 are both awkward looking. It's hard to make them look good in a logo, but my favorite one was the one from the mid-1970s. It was clean looking. Everything they've used since then looks too busy. And considering they've used variations of what is basically the same logo since the 1970s (except for the few years when they used the one you show), change is long overdue.
  2. Nah. It's pretty long in the tooth. Extremely dated, in my opinion. Helvetica Bold is so 1980s.
  3. I wonder if that's just an interim move until Antenna TV's deal expires with WSYX. I also wonder what's behind this. I doubt Court TVs going to be as popular as MeTV or do they even care? Is it all about who pays the most to lease the channel?
  4. Slightly off-topic: Nexstar is dropping the very popular MeTV from WCMH 4.2? What gives? Or are they going to replace with Antenna TV (which sucks)?
  5. Just another thought about the WKYC logo. The other thing that you guys have to remember is back when computer graphics for the PC were just beginning to be widely used, that stuff was exciting and cool. Now that we are 20 years into that, there is a certain amount of sameness to everything. It's almost too perfect to the point where it's mechanical and bland. Pull out an old retail ad from the 1970s and it looks a lot better from the standpoint of how they set the type than some computer-generated ad from Target looks today. And when I look at pictures of old school hand-painted signs, I find myself appreciating that look more than the computer generated sameness of laser-cut letters. It's kind of like another chapter in the analog vs digital debate. And in this case, analog, in the form of hand set type, looks a lot better. Case in point: look at my avatar.
  6. I like it. They used to do minimalist things in a Futura font, but that borders on being kind of Euro and artsy. This one stands out because there is no art to it. In fact there being no art to it is what makes it art, if that makes any sense. I don't like that color pink I'm seeing in the graphic though, but I like the general concept. It's different and it stands out.
  7. I like it. It's different. I don't like that desk, but I do like the general look they tried to give it. The new logo is a lot better than what they had, which was very long in the tooth. Change was long overdue. I'm not sure this is what I would have changed to if I were the decision maker, but we'll see how they roll this out. It's got some potential.
  8. I think so. I think Megan Pringle too. I tried Googling but couldn't find anything. I know David Silverstein was news director back then. Looks like a highway sign ... Route 3. That said, it's minimalist and it is going to stand out.
  9. WSYX at one point in the early 2000's was so desperate, they went to an (almost) all-chick news format for a while. It flopped.
  10. I tend to agree with this. Everybody has the four anchors with no personality, they all sit behind a desk in a studio that looks like the bridge of the USS Enterprise. Something different is long overdue.
  11. Some of you are haters. I don't think "Go" is such a bad name as it is being used alongside "3 News." It's different and it doesn't sound dated like calling it Eyewitness Action News or something like that. The way you guys were talking, I thought they were going to call it simply "Go," which is a little more awkward. I don't mind the name Go, but I don't think it conveys that it is a newscast. (It sounds like another "Extra" wannabe.) But "3 News: Go" is just fine depending on how they use it during the program.
  12. If I was AT&T I would put up a slide that details how much everybody pays for Disney channels today, how much they want and how much their bill will be going up if Disney gets what they want. I would imagine the fee is pretty substantial with ESPN involved. And if you live in a market with an O&O, I bet you it's costing you over 10 bucks.
  13. Not to be a party pooper, but it is adults 25 to 54. Kind of like when I tell my only nephew that he's my favorite. Nevertheless, they are the station I tend to watch the most. So good job.
  14. I know that being an atheist in some quarters is considered enlightened but the human body is a complicated organism containing specific parts that do specific jobs. Kind of hard to believe that your eyes, ears, nose, circulatory system, digestive system, brain and self-repair properties just kind of happened on their own. I don't know if you realize this, but being an atheist is like saying that if you throw a bunch of sand (glass), some unrefined petroleum (plastic) and chunks of metal ore (copper, gold) at a wall enough times, it would randomly arrange itself into an iPhone, complete with all the computer programming necessary to be an operable device including internal power source. In other words, believing in a creator is much more plausible than believing that pond scum gestating long enough could turn itself into the complicated beings that we all are. God, mother, country, national anthem! It's about time people stopped entertaining Marxist nonsense.
  15. I'm watching the Bengals/Colts game on WSYX. I was curious who the originating station was since there are no station logos on the broadcast so I looked it up. I just thought it was amusing that 4 of the 6 stations carrying the game are Sinclair stations. (The other two stations are Block.) PRESEASON WEEK 4: COLTS AT BENGALS | THURSDAY, AUG. 29 AT 7 P.M. TV Affiliates and Information Cincinnati: WKRC (CBS Channel 12) Dayton: WKEF (ABC Channel 22) Columbus: WSYX (ABC Channel 6) Lima: WLIO (FOX Channel 8.2) Lexington: WDKY (FOX Channel 56) Louisville: WDRB (FOX Channel 41)
  16. Any person who designs TV station graphics using the Arial font or any variation thereof should be terminated immediately.
  17. Speaking of netlets and the free market, I just saw Newsnet for the first time. My first impression is that it's a journalism professional trying to put a newschannel together in his basement. That's not really an insult. It's a good effort but they have a long way to go. Unfortunately, they picked the worst LPTV to be on. They have the worst signal, and it looks like it's all leased out. A channel can be down for weeks before they'll do something about it. In the case of Newsnet, the volume is turned down so low you can barely hear anything. https://yournewsnet.com/
  18. There is something about the production value of their in-house stuff that strikes me as cheesy. I don't know if it's the graphics, the lighting, the intro or what, but there is something about these bits they produce that really get under my skin and it has nothing to do with the content. It just looks small market to me for some reason and Sharyl Atkinson is a pro so her show shouldn't look like this. (Just my opinion.)
  19. Not that I know him, but he once smiled and said hi to me on campus as we were about to bump into each other for no reason. So my impression of Jeff is that he's a nice guy! I don't know if I like him as evening anchor, though. I'm all about the voice and he doesn't have a deep, entertaining voice. LOL Jack Nicklaus, Archie Griffin, Dave Thomas, Fred/Charles/Bob/Simon Lazarus (Macy's), Les Wexner, John Wolfe, Woody Hayes LuAnn Stoya, Kurt Ludlow, Mike Kilburn and Erin Carroll too
  20. Rumored for a long time, maybe they let him know what was going on and they got him to stay out of loyalty to the Wolfes? I always liked Jerry, even back to his radio days on WBNS. Good looking guy, delivers on an even keel. Not the most exciting guy in the world, but not boring either. My only knock against him was the poor chemistry he had with Kristyn Hartmann. For that matter, suspicious that Maureen Kocot and Shelby Croft left just before the sale was announced. Think they also got a heads up? Lots of back and forth between WTVN/WSYX and WBNS over the years, going back to the 1960's even with Gene D'Angelo as VP (from WTVN to WBNS). Sally Flowers and Gene Fullen first developed a following on WBNS Radio (originally a bandleader from Kansas, I think) and Gene Fullen was WTVN-TV's go-to personality for the longest time until he died from heart problems. Also ... Carol Costello, Janet Watkins, Lou Forrest, Tom Ryan ... and others. Now Tony D'Angelo is in charge of WSYX. I always wondered if the Tafts and the Wolfes were buddies since they were both in the same business and both traveled in Republican circles. These historical connections are meaningless, I know. Just interesting to me.
  21. About as surprising as the stations being sold.
  22. I think The Dispatch already does prints those Gannett papers along with The Cincinnati Enquirer and USA Today as well. I always thought they were setting things up for The Dispatch to go to Gannett, but GateHouse must have offered significantly more money. What's interesting is that they print the Dayton paper in Indy. Makes more sense to flip things around and print The Dayton Daily News (and the Springfield paper) in Columbus and Cincinnati Enquirer in Indy. You save trucking cost to Dayton, but it's the same distance to Cincinnati from both Columbus and Indy. But then again, perhaps there are dropoffs somewhere north of Cincy which would be farther if you have to take I-74. (Not that they care about benefitting Cox, but it still might make more sense to keep the presses going.) WBIR was a Multimedia station so it is with Tegna. The fact that that Delia guy from WTHR has been promoted and gets to continue to oversee the stations means they are cognizant about not screwing things up.
  23. That newsroom they have pictured in the article looks very similar to the setup WBNS and WTHR are using, with that round center pod. is that something that is an industry trend, or did they design their newsrooms that way in anticipation of selling out to Tegna?
  24. I was watching a little bit of the El Paso local coverage on the Nexstar station there (Channel 9). A prank caller called into the station claiming she was in the movie theater at the mall and her aunt was shopping in the mall and they put her on the air. She was dropping references to 8-chan, white supremacy and how they were ushered out of the movie theater and scared because of the rumors that African migrants were raping people at the mall. She was basically mocking all conventional talking points before she called the reporter a dumb f*** for believing her and hung up the phone. Edit: I found it but the volume is low:
