I don't see what's wrong with that open. Just a typical early 80's small-market station.
On the other hand, this is below-grade for its market size...
-
This is a pretty neat find. The opening segment of WJHG's Saturday Weekend News with Stan Pamfilis, 1977:
WAGA 1987 open, with Network's "Raw Power" on the Sports Unlimited bumper:
-
They also bear a resemblance to the map animation in the open WRGB was using in the same timeframe:
-
Really, KAIT? You couldn't at least simulcast the full newscasts you already produce locally at the same time?NBC's newest affiliate is KAIT, who will offer the network on a digital subchannel beginning January 26. The new NBC subchannel will offer WMC's newscasts with local inserts (I assume WMC is already the common NBC affiliate for the area, so this makes sense).
Seems quite silly to me, cable staple and sister status aside.
-
Looks like there was a certain amount of local tweaking there...not even TVbD's history of mediocre editing can justify the horrible nameline animation. The color scheme doesn't match either.
A rather interesting KXLY newsbreak, 1985:
-
Clean WFSB Daybreak open, 1995:
Same time, same station, new name/music/graphics - Eyewitness News This Morning, 1998:
Another set of new graphics in 1999:
Joyeux Noël à tous!
-
Crommy5 strikes again...
KCPQ 1983, new theme, KCRA-alike logo (makes sense, they were sisters at the time):
-
That would make sense given the lead story. Nobody in the Tri-Cities would care about a shooting in Yakima, and vice versa. The 11pm branding to me suggests that it aired on KNDO and KNDU together.
More interesting tidbits...
A glimpse of WIFR with People You Can Count On...in 1995 (complete with KDLH-alike logo):
WOAY 1995, still with News 88 (evidently they were using it with the 1994 theme):
Amazingly, they were still using that set in 2001, though it sounds like they had a new theme (snippet of it in the last few seconds):
-
Two KPTV newscasts from 2000...
April:
October, modified graphics and what sounds like production music being used in the open:
-
KNDU, 1999. Notice how much of a carbon-copy of WHEC the station's branding is, right down to voiceover and slogan!

I've got a theme ID - the first portion of "Open Country Joy" by Mahavishnu Orchestra.I don't recall seeing this KREM 1985 close, either:
More fresh KREM stuff:
A 1995 promo with Brave New World and TVbD/jcbD type graphics (leaning towards the latter given his work for KGW and KTVB):
1985 - a new open and a new theme:
Also from 1985, NewsCenter II/We're The Team pops up. This must have been right before they dumped it:
Their unknown 1987 theme makes an appearance:
1990 newsbreak - the theme doesn't sound like PNP in the least:
By 1991, though, they were definitely using PNP:
And a non-news clip - a Cinema 2 open from 1991 with Network's "Ultimate Quest":
-
The tail end of a 1975 WAAY newscast, with a theme that reminds me of what WLWD/WDTN was using at the time:
-
I have a theme ID for the
radioman1968 posted in March, and it isn't even in the NMSA yet. After a clue from the comments and some experimenting in Audacity it turns out that the theme is a section of Autobahn by Kraftwerk (more specifically 1:12-1:27 or so) that's been sped up by about 35% (33 1/3 to 45 speed).
-
The signature in the news theme lines up perfectly with Clearly the One. There's little doubt in my mind that they're one and the same, or are at least closely related.
-
This is one of the fastest turnaround times I've ever seen. TVSpy reports that WAKA's newly-minted ND is leaving the station after just one month due to "a family issue".
-
NWCN got the graphics as well.
...and with that, Ignitor is extinct (again).
And it only took 16 years.
-
No Hampton Roads station was listed...
Hmm. Well, that either makes me the least reliable source ever or gives me a rough time period for when they picked it up. Not sure which.
I'm half expecting the 5 and 3 combo to brand as Eyewitness News like some of the Nexstar duopolies.
It would definitely work, given KPHO's affiliation.
-
The archives of Broadcasting Magazine are a gold mine. Just discovered a dozen stations that have used "Move Closer to Your World". Time to get to work on putting together the info for the NMSA.
Is a station in Hampton Roads in there somewhere? Perhaps this will help back up my mother's memories of hearing it on WAVY.
-
Wow, those are really good!
the open is about the only similarity, though... -
The whole NBC Charlotte branding is stupid and needs to jettisoned pronto.
As for what they could rebrand to...I agree, WCNC News sounds pretty nice.
-
WOI-TV re-vamped their image in 2006, taking away the Eyewitness News moniker, and replacing it with ABC 5 news.
I suppose to make themselves feel more like an O&O, they also went with graphics that were VERY heavily inspired by graphics that Hothaus did for an ABC O&O station in the next state over...
KCAU also used those graphics, though I can't find the open at the moment.
-
Incredible find, Raymie! The mystery is solved at last.
I wonder just what it was they produced in the preceding dozen years...
-
They were still using those graphics in 1989? Good heavens. They probably only dumped them when they wore out the masters!About 14 minutes of a WSVI (yes, that WSVI) newscast and commercials from 1989:
Not sure if this has come up before in this thread, but I don't recall seeing it. KTRK promo for Eyewitness News...from 1968: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKSqaPDW3eI

Another KNAZ open from the very late 1990s. This one seems to be possibly from 2000, using Non-Stop's Power News:
The reports on the Navajo Generating Station and the Indian casino case date this to October 13, 1999.

My money's on him either leaving or simply getting the axe once (or even before) his contract runs out.
In smaller market news, Mark Mellinger abruptly vanished from WANE a few days ago. Now we know what happened, but still no idea why.
