1. Our source needs a capture card, but apparently WDIV ran through news opens like candy in the early 80's...

As seen on the first TVbD demo, they had a different open by 1983 but this music stuck around as a bumper. And all that, in turn, was gone by 1984...

  2.
Open is absolutely using News Edge - KAYU used the same cut around 2004.
@Raymie To add on to my own post - I submitted this to Mr. NMSA, and he thinks it's most likely from the Underground Collection of production music...a very strange coincidence, but one that makes sense (Arnold apparently let clients have at it in there if they picked up a package).

  3. On the topic of Tribune...I've thought this for a long time, now I'll say it:

If something comes of these rumors, it's going to be a big step towards the cold reality I think is coming: Canada-level consolidation within the next 5 to 10 years, of the sort that will probably destroy the "local" image of the stations here as much as it has there.

    Brace yourselves.

  4. That KJCT open is definitely KLTV 1985. I'll pop it in if you don't. The tease before it has another unknown that I recognize but can't name off the top of my head...

As for WMAR...wow, that's not the general style I'd expect from TVbD (save the "Nightside" lettering). Could there have been someone else involved?

  5. ICYMI, VHSgoodiesWA switched to a new channel...and from it, we have a KMGH close and late movie intro from March 1981.

The close theme matches the opens found in that gag reel that turned up a while back, but check out the music for the movie intro...Where You Belong!

  6. WICD bumper...is this NewScore? From 1987:

I'd say it is. Melody turns into a dead-on match in the last five seconds (compare :15 in the WTVM open on the NMSA).

A real find, posted a few days before Christmas...

A celebration of the career of KDKA Television's legendary Bill Burns (Patti's Daddy) from 1983/1988....

Interesting...the first few seconds of that "The World Tonight" open uses the same music as

  7.
From around 1983/1984, here is a KOAM-TV news open featuring the classic "Tuesday3" theme and a mention of Brian Williams doing weather - THE Brian Williams currently on MSNBC.
This is TuesdayE, not Tuesday3...but still, yet another thing to throw into the Joplin blender... At this point this feels like a topic for a @Raymie article...

  8.
WMAQ 1974 close at the end of this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ggLZWIcPgc One of the posters commented the theme was also used by WNAC and WDIO.
Digging this out of the archives...I found the evidence for WDIO using this piece. Terrible quality, but pretty cool nonetheless! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=5haQDU7kdGY;m=3;s=26 And this is the evidence for WNAC. Going to ping @TServo2049 for this too, since he said the track is a Capitol piece he might have...
  9. WTVQ 1989 - The model affiliate. When they were trying to keep their ABC affiliation.

    [snip]

That has got to be the strangest rendition of Hello I've ever heard. I wonder if they actually used it outside of this (which really does amount to sucking up to the network...).

KNDO in 1984...no open but given the close in the second part of the clip, this would probably be their theme. Interesting use of the NBC News globe animation of the time!
