1. Ouch, that KJCT open is just...yuck. Fonts, colors, the whole mess.

I mean, it's not bad from a technical standpoint - the animations are okay, the shadowing is decent, and the "news source" photo wrapping around the 8 is actually pretty clever and well-executed. But from a raw design standpoint, it reminds me of my own work from years ago - and not in a good way.

    So...yeah, ouch for sure.

  2. WVIT (Hartford, CT) November 25, 1992 11:00pm

Is that the WMGM News Package by Gari Media Group? It sounds very much like "The One For All" but with that classic Gari-esque early '90s synthesizer.

This has The One For All's signature, but it's too early to be the WMGM pack. I think this is an update to the original package that we've just never seen before. Seems the NMSA was a bit too hasty reassigning WVIT's listing to The Hour...

(And on that note, yet another example of packs or signatures hopping between stations.)

The Phoenix faucet keeps dripping. Now, a KPHO weather update:

And Beyond strikes again...that song has turned up in some very random places. (Including my personal playlist.)

  3. A KSWT promo from 2003-05. Note the Television by Design package similar to what then-sister KDBC had:

I had a feeling they'd used that pack, given the logo (which survived a fair bit longer). The real surprise for me is the music - FUEL, an early Groove Worx package originating from the little Wichita station that could, KCTU.

    Anyone recognize this image song?

Possibly a local production? Melody doesn't ring any bells, and the production sounds just a little too kitschy for something from the big names.

Meanwhile, it seems KVOA really didn't get the memo that News Series 2000 was long in the tooth. If this date is correct, and a little bit of Googling suggests it is, it actually did make it to 2000 (!). EDIT: Mr. NMSA says that this is actually NS2K+, and that this was his reminder to move the audio around.

  4. But come on, this logo is an abomination.

You have to give them a little credit - that X is a very nice nod to the searchlights of old.

Not that the logo in general isn't overkill...

  5.

Since we just saw a rare WAGA open, I wonder who composed the Theme Music. Could it be locally-produced or a Network Music track, cause I know then-owner Storer used lots of Network Music tracks for their stations.

The sound doesn't match with Network's typical instrumentation...I know I've heard the theme somewhere else before, but I can't remember for the life of me just where. It was relatively contemporary with WAGA's usage of it though.

I wonder if it was their actual theme at the time, or a one-off for the eclipse. If it was their actual theme, it might explain the odd dates given on this video...

    EDIT: It wasn't just a one-off...

  6. A We're the Team promo set...for WRC, the original client!

And there it is, the proof for the hypothesis I had after the Tuesday KNBC pack turned out to be unrelated to NewsCenter II...they were, after all, the earliest users of the theme (if you go by the NMSA anyway).

Another WRC promo, this time from 1980... "We Can't Wait to Show You!" (You can hear how this tagline was worked into the We're the Team promos.)

This has got to be the cheesiest campaign I've heard in a long while...probably a good reason we've never seen any off-air recordings of it in use. Yeesh.

    Did WMAQ ever use this?

Yes they did, and even earlier than the description says:

That animation was a bit ahead of its time, to be sure (a stark contrast to the minimalist approach WMAQ would take a few years later).

  7. One of the rarest markets on YT: Wausau, Wisconsin! A chunk of WJFW from 1992...

Yes, that's the WVII theme. WVII and WJFW were co-owned by Seaway Communications at this time (and are still sister stations).

Note the background behind that bumper at 1:48 - it's from a (presumably) syndicated graphics pack

, among others. (WVII also used it, but not in their opens.)

EDIT: That video also took me to this - The Image Leader!
